2. A Drezdában őrzött régi gipszmodelleket fel lehet használni a töredékek digitális dokumentációjának teljessé tételéhez. Erre nem a jelen projekt célkitűzéseinek megvalósításához, hanem a digitális modellek jövőbeni használhatósága érdekében van nagy szükség. A gipszmodellek ugyanis lehetővé teszik, a töredékeknek az olympiai múzeumban egyelőre (és valószínűleg a jövőben is) hozzáférhetetlen hátsó részeinek pontos dokumentálását illetve ezt követő kutatását.

E munka mellett a tervezett folytatásnak célja a projekt eredményeinek publikálása.
Summary
The project NNF 78486 has reached its main objective and successfully realized the virtual 3D reconstruction of the east pediment of the temple of Zeus at Olympia. There are, however, some important details, which remained – for practical reasons – unexplored, but could considerably improve the outcome of the project.

The original plaster models of the pedimental group, which were made in the 19th century and were supposed to have perished during World War II, turned out to survive up to now in Dresden. This new piece of information and the consent of the curator of the plaster cast collection to carry out research on these models opens up new possibilities for the project:

1. One can compare the old plaster models with the new digital ones produced during the project. This analysis of the differences will most probably reveal the reasons of the discrepancy between the conclusions achieved with the plaster models and the digital ones. The comparison can corroborate or adjust the results of the project.

2. The old plaster casts, taken from the originals can be used instead of the originals to complete the digital documentation of the fragments. The old plaster models offer the unique possibility to scan those rear parts as well, which were (and will most probably remain) inaccessible for scanning in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. This additional documentation would be highly desirable in order to facilitate further research of the pieces.

Beside this work, the presentation of the results should be concluded as well. The publication of the results was originally envisaged in a research monograph, but a more appropriate means of publication would be a documentary CD-ROM.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
Elkészült a projekt első szakaszának (NNF 78486) eredményeit bemutató multimédiás CD-ROM (ISBN 978-963-284-196-0) Digitalizálásra került az orocsoport mindkét korábbi, gipszből készített rekonstrukciója Drezdában. A virtuális 3D rekonstrukció ennek fényében helytállónak bizonyult. 2011 július 20: Nicosia, Cyprus Institute, Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center, Scientific Seminar: "The virtual 3D reconstruction of the east pediment of the temple of Zeus at Olympia - New technologies applied to a century-old archaeological question". szeptember 12: Prága, XXIIIrd CIPA Symposium: “The Virtual 3D Reconstruction of the East Pediment of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia – Presentation of an Interactive CD-ROM” november 21: Berlin, Altertumswissenschaftliches Kolloquium Institut für Klassische Archäologie der Freien Universität: „Olympia 3D – Die virtuelle Rekonstruktion des Ostgiebels” 2012. január 21: Bamberg, Tagung der AG CAA: „The Virtual 3D Reconstruction of the East Pediment of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia” (poster) március 27: Southampton, 40th Congress of Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology: „The Virtual 3D Reconstruction of the East Pediment of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia”
Results in English
The results of the previous part of the project (NNF 78486) have been published on a multimedia CD-ROM (ISBN 978-963-284-196-0) Both earlier plaster reconstructions of the pedimental group were digitized in Dresden. Comparing these models with the virtual 3D reconstruction produced during the first part of the project, the puzzling differences could be satisfactorily explained and the virtual 3D reconstruction proved to be reliable. The results were presented on international conferences and published in international periodicals. 2011 20th July: Nicosia, Cyprus Institute, Scientific Seminar: "The virtual 3D reconstruction of the east pediment of the temple of Zeus at Olympia - New technologies applied to a century-old archaeological question". 12th September: Prága, XXIIIrd CIPA Symposium: “The Virtual 3D Reconstruction of the East Pediment of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia – Presentation of an Interactive CD-ROM” 21st November: Berlin, Altertumswissenschaftliches Kolloquium Institut für Klassische Archäologie der Freien Universität: „Olympia 3D – Die virtuelle Rekonstruktion des Ostgiebels” 2012. 21st January: Bamberg, Tagung der AG CAA: „The Virtual 3D Reconstruction of the East Pediment of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia” (poster) 27th March: Southampton, 40th Congress of Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology: „The Virtual 3D Reconstruction of the East Pediment of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia”
