Summary
The chlorite-thiosulfate reaction exhibits wide range of exotic kinetic phenomena such as fluctuation induced behaviour in nonbuffered medium, complex periodic and aperiodic oscillations in CSTR, etc. One of the final aim of this investigation is to unravel the kinetics and mechanism of the parent reaction. This system is, however, very complex since it has at least three long-lived intermediates - tetrathionate ion, chlorine dioxide, hypochlorous acid - and they can even react not only with the reactants but also with each other with reasonable rates and they can also be end-products depending on the initial concentration ratio of the reactants. By now as a result of the systematic mechanism investigations the kinetics and mechanism of several subsystems of the parent reaction have already been established by the help of OTKA (D38001) and Békésy (B12/2003) postoctoral fellowships. The task of this proposal is to unravel the kinetics and mechanisms of those subsystems of the parent reaction that of are still unexplored and to compare them with their bromine and iodine analogies.
