Summary in Hungarian
Bár mind a szülők, mind a pedagógusok a legnehezebb feladatok közé sorolják a gyerekek fegyelmezését és büntetését, meglepő módon alig találkozunk e problémakör módszeres vizsgálatával.
Summary
Most parents and teachers would agree in that discipline and punishment of children is the most difficult task in child-rearing and education. Nevertheless we hardly can find an accurate investigation of the issue. In the same time the question of discipline is connected not only with the effectiveness of education but it has a significance from the point of view of socialization in a greater sense.
There was a variety of praxis of discipline and punishment of the children in the history of education and there have always been passionate debates on the topic. The main purpose of our research is to call attention to the interconnection of the ideas and methods with the historical circumstances and to their strong relationship with basic assumptions about human nature.
In our research we would like to investigate boundary between the goals of the process of child-rearing and education and individual rights of the child-pupil. Our question at hand is what the methods and instruments were like with which pedagogical thinking of different eras strived to keep purposes of socialisation and personalization in balance, and what are the typical reasons why this two became imbalanced several times? Which were successful or less effective methods and attempts for the sake of setting up the balance again?
Our research group is planning to study pedagogical thinking and praxis, legal questions and the public opinion with a historical comparison of different eras (1880-1890, 1920-1930, 1960-1980 and the present). Material is to be collected by a variety of methods: review of the Hungarian and international literature, an analysis of documents and laws, curricula, rules and regulations of schools, popular books.
