A kutatás az MTA Földrajztudományi Kutatóintézet Kárpát-medencei etnikai térszerkezeti kutatásaihoz kapcsolódik és az 1997-ben megkezdett, OTKA támogatással megjelent, nemzetközileg közismertté vált etnikai térképsorozat (Erdély, Szlovákia, Kárpátalja, Horvátország, Vajdaság, Muravidék, Őrvidék, Magyarország), a T22831-es és T32741-es, „kiválóan megfelelt” minősítéssel lezárult, és a T049567-es végső fázisban lévő (2008 végén záruló) OTKA témák folytatására, nemzetközi szintetizálására törekszik. Az innovatív alapkutatás legfőbb célkitűzése a nemzetközileg is egyedülálló, Kárpát-medence és a szomszédos országok területére vonatkozó, települési szintű (történeti dimenzióval is rendelkező), egységes etnikai földrajzi információs rendszer létrehozása és a „Kárpát-Pannon térség etnikai térképe” című alkotás létrehozása. A 11 országra kiterjedő vizsgált terület az Európai Unió egyetlen etnikailag-nyelvileg tarka makrorégiója, ahol az etnikai szerkezet tér-időbeli dinamikájának települési szintű bemutatása európai szinten (politikailag és tudományosan) kiemelkedő fontosságú és a földrajz- és térképtudomány érintett területein átütő eredményre vezet. A projekt létrehozná (esetenként tovább erősítené) az érintett országok etnikai földrajzi kutatási hálózatát. A várható kutatási eredmény, a kb. 34 ezer településre (közel félmillió km²-nyi területre) kiterjedő etnikai térinformatikai termék továbbfejleszthető más, hasonló térbeli dimenziójú társadalomföldrajzi kutatás céljaira is.
Summary
The research is conceived as part of the ethnic geographical projects of the Geographical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (started 1997 with the series of ethnic maps of the Carpathian basin of international renown: Transylvania, Slovakia, Transcarpathia, Croatia, Vojvodina, Prekmurje, Burgenland, Hungary) and considered as a continuation and synthesis of the successfully finished (or to terminate in the near future) projects funded by OTKA (Nr. T22831, T32741 or T049567). The most important objective of the innovative fundamental research is the creation of an internationally novel and uniform ethnic GIS encompassing the countries of the Carpatho-Pannonian area (down to the settlement level! – also having a historical dimension) and of an “Ethnic Map of the Carpatho-Pannonian Area”. The area studied extending to the territory of 11 countries is the only multiethnic macroregion of the European Union, where an up-to-date presentation of the spatial-temporal dynamics of the ethnic structure has an outstanding political and scientific importance and it could result in genuine achievements in the given fields of geography and cartography. The project could establish (or confirm) the ethnic geographic network of the countries in the macroregion. The expected research results focusing on the ethnic GIS-product (including data of ca 34 thousand settlements and a territory of nearly half a million square kilometers) could also be applied by other human geographic projects with similar space dimension.
