Summary in Hungarian
A koherens optikai kontroll folyamatok a kvantumkommunikáció, kvantumkriptográfia, és kvantumszámítógép alapjául szolgálnak. A projekt keretében ilyen folyamatokat valósítunk meg ritkaföldfémekkel adalékolt egykristályokban. Ezekben a folyamatokban a megvilágító fény az adalékionok kvantumállapotát kontrollálja. Ennek következtében a minta szuszceptibilitása jelentősen megváltozik, mely a klasszikus optikában ismeretlen jelenségekre vezet. A projekt sikeres végrehajtása kvantumos szinten működő és kvantumkoherenciát kihasználó eszközök gyakorlati megvalósításához járul hozzá: fotonok nagy sávszélességű kvantumos tárolása; kvantumkapuk fotonok számára; kvantuminformáció továbbítása nagy távolságra.
Summary
Coherent optical control processes provide the basis for quantum communication, quantum cryptography, and quantum computers. In our project such processes will be realized in single crystals doped with rare-earth elements. In the course of the processes the irradiating light field controls the quantum state of the dopant ions. As a result, the susceptibility of the sample is substantially altered, which leads to phenomena that are unconceivable in classical optics. The successful implementation of the project will contribute to the practical realization of photonic devices which operate at the single quantum level and exploit the quantum coherence: large bandwidth quantum storage of photons; photonic quantum gates; quantum information transfer between distant sites.
Our project consists of several subsequent steps: The rare-earth doped single crystals will be prepared in the crystal growth laboratory. The relevant properties of the crystals will be determined via optical absorption and emission, Raman, EPR, photon echo and saturation spectroscopies. These measurements yield the term structure of the dopant ions, homogeneous and inhomogeneous linewidths, oscillator strengths, and selection rules of the relevant atomic transitions. Using these data we will implement and demonstrate existing coherent optical control schemes in the optical lab and design new ones. Beside qualified senior researchers, PhD and graduate students will be involved in the work.
