Summary in Hungarian
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Kiemelt jelentőségű ezért a részecskék aszimmetrikus felületi funkcionalizása. A munka során tanulmányozott kölcsönhatások valamint a vizsgált mérettartomány komoly relevanciával bírnak biológiai rendszerek vonatkozásában is.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Segítségükkel a nano-tudományok területén megszerzett új elméleti ismeretek a gyakorlatba is alkalmazhatóak. Ezáltal lehetségessé válhat költséghatékony módon, nanoméretű (méter egymilliomod része) objektumok szerkezetbe rendezése. Az önszerveződés folyamata során a parányi építőelemek a természeti törvények által előre meghatározott struktúrákat hoznak létre. A nanoméretek világában azonban az objektumok közötti kölcsönhatások komplexek, és nagyban eltérnek a mindennapokban megszokott természeti törvényektől. Megfelelően tervezett ‘építőkövek’ létrehozásával, valamint a kis mérettartományokban ható kölcsönhatások kézben tartásával lehetővé válhat az önszerveződésben rejlő hatalmas lehetőségek megvalósítása. A kutatás célja annak tanulmányozása, hogy a nanoméretű objektumok közötti kölcsönhatások miként tervezhetőek és irányíthatóak, valamint hogy ezáltal milyen speciális (optikai, optoelektronikai, felületi) tulajdonságokkal rendelkező szerkezetek hozhatóak létre.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Basic concepts of colloid and physical chemistry are being used to control the interaction between colloidal particles, determining the shape, size, and functionality of the individual objects as well as their assemblies. An emerging field in nanoscience in general, is the symmetry breaking and asymmetry determined interaction/assembly in colloidal systems. The ability to direct the interaction between nanoparticles, could open the way for many advanced applications, where the cooperative interaction between assembled nanoscopic building blocks can result in new or enhanced functionality.
In the proposed fundamental research work, the wide palette of tools from colloid and physical chemistry will be used to create hierarchic and asymmetric nanostructured materials, which can be of interest in areas like surface phenomena (e.g. wettability), catalysis, optoelectronics or bio-science. The material system includes nanoparticles and nanostructures composed of organic molecules (macromolecules, polymers) and inorganic materials (metal, semiconducting, dielectric). Multicomponent assemblies are of special interest, where unique physical or chemical features may arise due to the interaction of the different building blocks in the assembly (e.g. plasmonic near field modulated catalytic or optoelectronic processes, special surface energy landscape of the composite material - important for wettability and the adsorption of biomolecules). The spaciously different reactivity and physical-chemical property of these nano-objects will be used to direct their interaction with each other, creating hierarchical assemblies.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Main question of the proposed research is how asymmetric colloidal building blocks can contribute to create nanostructured materials with advanced functionality, and how special cooperative effect may arise in such assemblies? The planned work pursues to investigate how and to what extend the shape anisometry and site-selective surface modification of colloids can be used to control and direct their interaction? The directed assembly of colloidal building blocks could help to create nanoparticle assemblies where synergic effect arise. These include plasmonic near field enhancement of optical and optoelectronic processes, (photo)catalytic processes, or the creation of special surface energy patterns. Prospective question of the work is how the synthesis of these particles and assemblies with special features can contribute to the fundamental studies regarding the above mentioned areas.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

In the last few decades chemistry, physics and biology have witnessed a vast expansion of the possibilities thank to different nanomaterials and nanostructures. Owing to their unique properties, concepts in optics, energy conversion, catalysis, detection of biomolecules, drug delivery and diagnostics are constantly reinterpreted. To unlock the true potential of nanomaterials, however, they have to be arranged into desired hierarchal structures. The bottom-up approach for the structure formation is a very promising strategy. To fulfill this promise, however, sufficient control over the interactions is desired. But unlike organic (macro)molecules, where physicochemical inhomogeneity might be inherently present due to different functional groups, nanoparticles lack the capability of directional “bond” formation. The proposed work addresses this problem by creating nanoscale building blocks with asymmetric surface functionality. The proposed project can contribute in general to exploit the possibilities of hierarchical assemblies of colloidal building blocks. The interactions and sizes involved in the work are highly relevant also for biological systems.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Bottom-up self-assembly holds great promise to bring the new knowledge obtained in the field of ‘nanoscience’ to real world applications, offering a cost-effective, massively parallel approach to manipulate nanoscale (on the order of one millionth of a meter) building blocks. During self-assembly, the small building blocks are brought together and allowed to organize into structures determined by the laws of nature. At the nanoscale, however, the rules determining the interaction between small object are complex and differ fundamentally from the natural laws we are used to in our daily life. Proper design of the building blocks and the control interactions at this small size scale is desired to fulfill the promise of self-assembling functional systems. The proposed work aims to investigate how the interaction between solution based nanoscale building blocks can be designed and directed, in order to produce structures with special optical, optoelectronic, or surface functionality.
