Summary
The aim of the research is a systematic comparison of the folk music cultures in Eurasia, using artificial inteligences and data mining tools. To do this, we need a large folksong database representing all significant musical cultures in Eurasia, and a program system analysing the musical similarities of the melodies, melody types, musical styles and cultures. The results of a recent project show that the further development of the database and the analysing softwares can result in significant and new results.

The plan requires a unification of the different digital codes of notation. We have to elaborate converter programs assuring the conversion between ETF, XML, MIDI, ESAC, KERN, ABC and our “VNF” codes.

We also plan to elaborate a new program which learns the whole set of the significant melody forms in Eurasia, and determines the national/areal melody cultures as different subsets of the great common set. We study the intensity of the connections between different cultures by the analysis of the overlaps of these national/areal subsets. Thus, the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the system of connections between the Eurasian musical cultures can be accomplished by the above way. This allows us an unbiased study of the place and role of the Hungarian folk music tradition in this comprehensive system.
