Grafén - a szén atomokból álló két dimenziós hatszögrács - egy különleges két dimenziós elektron gáz olyan egyedülálló elektronikus tulajdonságokkal, melyek új, ballisztikus transzporton alapuló eszközök építőelemévé tehetik.
Information technology calls for an ever increasing capability of information processing and storage. To meet these challenges, the smart design of new nanoelectronic devices, which are based on novel materials, is needed, offering exciting possibilities as well as improving markedly present day technologies. This requires the characterization of novel, exotic states of matter and understanding their non-equilibrium dynamics. Graphene - the strictly two-dimensional, honeycomb lattice of carbon atoms - is a two-dimensional electron gas with unique and promising electronic properties, making it an exciting candidate
for novel, probably even ballistic-transport-based devices. With its charge carriers being described as massless, chiral Dirac fermions, graphene has also stimulated fundamental interest in basic research. The surface states of topological insulators, a novel state of quantum matter, exhibit similar, appealing physical properties. While their equilibrium response is largely explored, there are several fundamental open issues: what happens when they are driven out-of-equilibrium, what kind of novel type of spin and charge transport is expected and what are they useful for? Is there any possibility to face novel types of strongly correlated states of matter under non-equilibrium conditions? On the one hand, a plethora of fascinating phenomena is expected from the analogy of relativistic quantum electrodynamics, such as Schwinger's pair production, whose unambiguous experimental observation is still lacking, while on the other hand, for nanoelectronic applications, the interest is in the high electric field limit, where our non-equilibrium studies are of immediate importance.
The goal of this proposal is to answer these questions and to investigate non-equilibrium spin and charge dynamics in the two-dimensional world of Dirac electrons of topological insulators and graphene. The expected results are the non-equilibrium characterization of charge and spin transport capabilities of these materials and understanding of the high field processes, essential for nanoelectronic and spintronic devices.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
Egy dimenziós elektron rendszerek hagyományosan jól leírhatóak a Luttinger-folyadék képpel egyensúlyban. Mi kiterjesztettük a Luttinger-folyadék univerzalitási osztály érvényességi tartományát nem-egyensúlyi körülmények esetére a kvantum quench dinamika hatását vizsgálva a rendszer Loschmidt-echojára és a végzett munka statisztikájára nézve. A topologikus sávszerkezetek ritkák, bár jelentős igény mutatkozik irányukban pl. a kvantum számítások miatt, melyet jól mutat az idei fizikai Nobel-díj is. Topologikus átalakulásokat hagyományosan anyagtudományi eljárásokkal lehet elérni. Megmutattuk, hogy időben periódikus perturbációk hatására a topológia megváltozhat a Floquet-sávszerkezet megváltoztatása miatt. A elektron-elektron kölcsönhatás is használható hasonló céllal, melynek során a kölcsönhatás egy effektív spin-pálya csatolást hozhat létre pl. a szupravezetés helyett, mely alkalmas a topológia megváltoztatására.

One dimensional electrons are usually described by the Luttinger liquid theory in equilibrium. We have extended the Luttinger liquid universality class to the non-equilibrium situation by investigating the quantum quench dynamics on the Loschmidt echo and statistics of work done. Topological band structures are scarse but much needed for e.g. quantum computation, which is clearly demonstrated by this year's Nobel prize in physics. Conventionally, a change in the topology of a system is achieved by using tools from material science. We have demonstrated that time periodic perturbation can be used to induce topological transitions by modifying the Floquet band structure. Electron-electron interaction can also be used to trigger topological phase transition by inducing an effective spin orbit coupling as opposed to e.g. superconductivity.
