A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A CERN Antiproton-lassítójánál mûködõ ASACUSA-kísérlet (Atomic Spectroscopy and Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons, japán-dán-magyar-német-olasz-osztrák együttmûködés) keretében tervezzük eddig is igen sikeresen folyó vizsgálatainkat folytatni ill. bõvíteni a következõ mérésekkel:

1. Az antiproton tömegnek és mágneses momentumának mérése metastabil antiprotonos héliumatomokon kétfotonos lézerspektroszkópiával ill. lézer-mikrohullám-lézer hármas rezonanciával. A mi módszerünk eddig az egyetlen, amellyel az antiproton ezen tulajdonságai meghatározhatók, a tömeg mérésével már megközelítettük a proton tömegének pontosságát.

2. Antihidrogén-nyaláb elõállítása és az antihidrogén-atomok hiperfinom felhasadásának mérése két szextupól-mágnes közé helyezett, hangolható mikrohullámú rezonátor segítségével.

3. Ionizációs ütközési folyamatok elméleti és kísérleti vizsgálata kisenergiájú antiprotonokkal, a hasonló protonos reakciókkal összehasonlítva.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A CERN Antiproton-lassítójánál mûködõ ASACUSA-kísérlet (Atomic Spectroscopy and Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons, japán-dán-magyar-német-olasz-osztrák együttmûködés) keretében tervezzük eddig is igen sikeresen folyó vizsgálatainkat folytatni ill. bõvíteni.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kísérletünk kis mérete egyedülálló lehetõséget nyújt fiatal kutatóinknak a modern méréstechnikák elsajátítására. A magyar részvétel az ASACUSA-kísérletben igen jelentős: a komoly nemzetközi visszhangot kiváltó, 2011-ben megjelent Nature-cikkünkben a 4 magyar szerző a szerzői gárda harmadrészét adta.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A CERN Antiproton-lassítójánál mûködõ ASACUSA-kísérlet (Atomic Spectroscopy and Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons, japán-dán-magyar-német-olasz-osztrák együttmûködés) keretében tervezzük eddig is igen sikeresen folyó vizsgálatainkat folytatni ill. bõvíteni a protonok és antiprotonok illetve hidrogén és antihidrogén tulajdonságainak pontos mérésével.

A kísérletünk kis mérete egyedülálló lehetõséget nyújt fiatal kutatóinknak a modern méréstechnikák elsajátítására.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The CPT invariance is one of the fundamental symmetries of Nature, it state the equivalence of particles and antiparticles. New theories assume its violation, and that necessitates its precise experimental verification. The Japanese-Austrian-Danish-German-Hungarian-Italian ASACUSA (Atomic Spectroscopy and Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons) collaboration aims with our participation to continue and extend the test of CPT invariance with the following measurements:
1. Measure the mass and magnetic moment of the antiproton using 2-photon laser spectroscopy and laser-microwave-laser triple resonance on antiprotonic helium atoms.
2. Create an antihydrogen beam and measure the hyperfine structure of antihydrogen with a tunable microwave resonantor placed between two sextupole magnets.
3. Theoretical and experimental study of collisional and ionization processes of protons and antiprotons.
4. CERN has approved the construction of the ELENA (Extreme Low Energy Antiprotons) ring which should increase the efficiency of the AD experiments by orders of magnitude, our group plans to participate in this project as well.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

CPT invariance is one of the fundamental symmetries of Nature, it states the equivalence of particles and antiparticles. New theories assume its violation, and that necessitates its precise experimental verification. The Japanese-Austrian-Danish-German-Hungarian-Italian ASACUSA (Atomic Spectroscopy and Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons) collaboration aims with our participation to continue and extend the test of CPT invariance, which proved to be very successful in the last few years. We plan to check the equivalence of the following properties of protons and antiprotons: (1) mass and magnetic moment, (2) antihydrogen hyperfine splitting and (3) cross-sections of ionization and collisional processes. Construction of the ELENA ring should increase the efficiency of the AD experiments by orders of magnitude, all research teams at the Antiproton Decelerator participate in this project.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The possible violation of CPT invariance is again discussed due to the (not yet confirmed) observation of superluminal neutrinos. That experiment could be interpreted with Lorentz violation, which in turn can be tested by measuring the magnetic moment of the antiproton in comparison with that of the proton.

The small size of our experiment makes it ideal for young physicists to study the experimental methods of modern particle physics. The present grant request is for the participation of ten Hungarian researchers (six physicists, an engineer and three doctoral students) in this extremely successful international collaboration. Our contribution to the experimental apparatus, just like earlier, will consist of the design and construction of precise positioning stands for the various parts of the apparatus: magnets, cryogenics, detectors, etc. We also want to contribute to the design and construction of the ELENA (Extreme Low Energy Antiprotons) ring at the Antiproton Decelerator, which should increase the efficiencies of all AD experiments by orders of magnitude. The Hungarian participation in ASACUSA is quite noticeable: 4 of the 12 authors of our widely acclaimed Nature paper published in July 2011 were members of our Hungarian group.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

CPT invariance is one of the fundamental symmetries of Nature, it states the equivalence of matter and antimetter, i.e. of particles and antiparticles in apparent contradiction to the fact the in the observable part of the Universe there are no antimatter galaxies. New theories assume its violation, among others due to the (not yet confirmed) observation of superluminal neutrinos, and that necessitates its precise experimental verification. We plan to check the equivalence of proton and antiproton by precise sopectroscopic methods.

The small size of our experiment makes it ideal for young physicists to study the experimental methods of modern particle physics. The present grant request is for the participation of ten Hungarian researchers (six physicists, an engineer and three PhD-students) in this extremely successful international collaboration. Our contribution to the experimental apparatus will consist of the design and construction of precise positioning stands for the various parts of the apparatus: magnets, cryogenics, detectors, etc. We also want to contribute to the design and construction of the ELENA (Extreme Low Energy Antiprotons) ring at the Antiproton Decelerator, which should increase the efficiencies of all AD experiments by orders of magnitude.

Megszerveztük az "International Conference on Precision Physics and Fundamental Physical Constants (FFK-2015)", Budapest, 1October 2015. Szimmetriák volt a fő téma, lásd https://indico.cern.ch/e/ffk2015.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
We studied the symmetries in particle physics, the experiments comparing the properties of protons and antiprotons. The precision of measuring the mass of the antiproton using laser spectroscopy on antiprotonic helium atoms is limited by the thermal motion of the helium atom. We have built a cooling system which went down to temperatures below 1.8 K and it provided a precision of 10^-9 with single-laser spectroscopy. We measured spectra of antiprotonic atoms in superfluid helium. As a technical contribution we participated in building the ELENA ring for the post-deceleration of antiprotons of the Antiproton Decelerator. The time symmetry of large quantum systems can be violated by inevitable entanglement with the rest of the universe or by new physics of spontaneous decoherence. The mathematical structure of corresponding non-unitary quantum dynamics as well as possible experimental tests have been investigated. Ionization and scattering of charged particles was the main subject of theoretical calculations using the classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. We have provided reference data for the single and double total ionization cross sections for a wide range of antiproton impact energies (3keV – 1MeV). Organization of "International Conference on Precision Physics and Fundamental Physical Constants (FFK-2015)", Budapest, 12-16 October 2015. The main subject of the conference was testing symmetry principles, see https://indico.cern.ch/e/ffk2015.
