magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

3) A neutrondetektorok segítségével az alapkutatás terén a világ vezető laboratóriumaiban (GSI, RIKEN) a magból feltöréses reakcióban illetve beta késleltetett neutronbomlásban kilépő 2 neutron korrelációját kívánjuk vizsgálni, ami a magban meglevő párkorreláció új aspektusainak feltárását esetleg a magban di-neutron kimutatását teszi lehetővé. Az alkalmazott kutatás terén a transzmutációhoz kapcsolódó hatáskeresztmetszeteket kívánunk mérni. Ezeket a terveket elfogadott mérésjavaslatok teszik megalapozottá.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A projekt a neutronfizika terén is olyan új nemzetközi kapcsolatok kialakítását teszi lehetővé , amelyek megkönnyítki a későbbi közös európai programokba való csatlakozást.

A NEDENSAA kollaboráció legfontosabb célja a fejlesztés terén, hogy egy korszerűbb, egyszerűbben gyártható, környezetbarátabb neutron-detektálási technika kidolgozásahoz járuljon hozzá. Bár a fejlesztések esődleges célja az új nagy európai kutatási infrastruktúrák munkájának az elősegítése, tekintettel arra, hogy a neutronok fontos szerepet játszanak a gyógyszerkutatástól a nemzetbiztonságon át az energetikáig, ezért egy ilyen fejlesztés a gazdasági élet számos területén hasznosul.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A neutronok detektálására kidolgozott technikák viszonyleg régiek.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The NEDENSAA collaboration initiated and funded by the nuclear physics ERANET, NUPNET, is aimed at development of neutron detectors for the nuclear physics infrastructures on the ESFRI road map. A collaboration of nuclear physics laboratories in Hungary including ATOMKI and the Debrecen and Eötvös Universties is willing to join this collaboration with the following main objectives:

1) We are going to test several of the new scintillator materials and to determine their characteristics with high precision in order to find the proper neutron detector material for nuclear physics experiments fulfilling the requirements on timing, n-gamma discrimination, light yield and efficiency as well as the security demands.

2) Using the scintillator material chosen by the international community we are going to build a neutron detector array, to test on it the possibility of replacement of PMs by SiPMs, to implement into digital electronics different n-gamma discrimination algorithms, as well as to perform experiments of nuclear physics interest. Finally, these detectors will be installed at GSI as part of the NeuLand setup.

3) By use of neutron detectors, in the field of basic research we are going to study the correlation of 2 neutrons exiting the nucleus in break-up reactions or in beta delayed 2-neutron emission in order to search for new aspects of nuclear pairing and to explore if there is a di-neutron correlation in the nucleus. In the field of applied research we are going to measure cross sections associated with nuclear transmutation projects. These objectives are supported by accepted proposal in different international laboratories.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Neutron pairing is a consequence of the monopole nucleon-nucleon interaction. In BCS approximation the neutron pairs are on time mirrored orbits, while cluster models allow for existence of a di-neutron cluster in which case the neutrons move together. In nuclear collisions or in beta delayed neutron decay of strongly neutron rich nuclei a pair of weakly bound neutrons may exit out of the nucleus. From the directional correlation of the exiting neutrons one may conclude on directional correlation of the nucleons within the nucleus. The detector array to be developed help to answer this and similar questions.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

In the field of basic research the planned investigations can be considered as preparations for the nuclear structure studies to be performed at the ESFRI road map infrastructure GSI-FAIR within the framework of the NUSTAR collaboration. Our developments are part of instrumentation of this facility. The project opens up new possibilities in the field of neutron physics, too, which may serve as foundation for new European projects.

The main object of the NEDENSAA collaboration is to contribute to the development of an up-to-date, easy to produce more green neutron detection technique. Although, the aim of these developments is to help the ESFRI road map nuclear physics infrastructures, considering that neutrons play an important role from medical research through nuclear proliferation to energetics, the results of the developments will have a direct or indirect effect in different fields of the national economy.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Since the application of Hungary for ESS it became well known also in our country that neutron physics may play a role in many fields from medical research through homeland security to energetics.

The methods developed for detection of neutrons in the early days of nuclear physics became already out of date. 3He, the main material used for detection of slow neutrons was a byproduct of nuclear weapon industry and is hardly available nowadays. The most popular fast neutron detector material called NE213 was developed in the '60-es, it is flammable, poisonous and easily leaks from the old type detectors. In this way, it does not suit to the modern safety requirements.

The objective of the NEDENSAA collaboration is to contribute to the production of an up-to-date, more green neutron detector setup. Our group is going to study the new materials produced within the collaboration or elsewhere and to determine the properties of the most promising materials with a high precision. In addition, we are going to study the use of low power consumption silicon sensors to collect the signals from these detectors.

By use of the detectors developed, we are going to perform experiments both in the fields of applied (connected to the nuclear transmutation) and basic (connected eg. to the study of new aspects of nuclear pairing) research in the leading laboratories of the world like in GSI, Germany or in RIKEN, Japan.

The European Research Area Network in nuclear physics called NEDENSAA, NEutron DEtector developments for Nuclear Structure, Astrophysics and Applications is an effort to pool available resources and ongoing R&D efforts by various groups throughout Europe with the aim of providing significant improvements in neutron detection. ATOMKI in collaboration with the Debrecen University and Eötvös University participated in three fields of research: 1. Contributed to the development of the NeuLAND array via validation of the simulation codes, proposing methods for the identification of multi-hit events, as well as for the reconstruction of neutron momenta. In addition, we studied the possibility of replacement of photomultipliers with SiPMs, and bought, tested and installed plastic scintillators into the neutron detector array, 2. Characterized the p+Be and d+D neutron and 60Co gamma radiation fields available at Atomki to make them ready for tests of detection materials, 3. Studied the systematics of production of nuclei with extreme isospin values through multinucleon removal reactions and found a general rulefor the decrease of the cross section of removing one more nucleon. Associated with this direction, the structure of some very neutron rich nuclei like 19C, 136Sn or 70Fe has also been studied.
