magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A villa leletanyagát feldolgozó publikáció sorozat befejező részeként a tervezett kutatás során a zárt rétegekben, valamint kútleletekben előkerült mintegy másfélezer kerámiát szeretnénk feldolgozni.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

Közép Itáliából szinte hiányoznak a római kerámiát bemutató publikációk.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A villa gazdag kerámia-anyagából számunkra különösen fontosak a zárt leletegyüttesekből (kutak csatornák) előkerült edények. Összetételükből nemcsak az asztali, a konyhaedények vagy a szállításnál használt kerámiák mennyiségére derülhet fény, hanem a távoli területekről (Észak Afrika) importált és a környék különböző fazekascentrumaiban készült edények arányát is pontosan határozhatjuk meg. Ennek révén a villa kereskedelmi életére, az abban bekövetkező változásokra vonatkozó következtetéseket vonhatunk le. A leletek segítségével pontosabban keltezhetjük a villa építési periódusait, átépítéseit, nyomonkövethetjük életének egyes fázisait az I.század közepétől a III.század végéig.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Between 1983 and 2009 we unearthed a 2 ha large Roman villa in the Central Italian San Potito di Ovindoli by the financial support of the Soprintendenza archeologica d'Abruzzo and the Self-Goverment (Comune di) Ovindoli. This was the first excavation in Italy led by Hungarian archaeologists, on an unexplored area, which provided data about the Roman settlement pattern and on its development. The results of the investigations of the villa were published in an individual book in L'Aquila, the preparation of which was supported by the OTKA. The excavations continued in two more seasons after he publication of the book. In the end we could determine the ground plan of the entire villa and observe 4 periods of the construction. In the final part of the publication series of the finds of the villa we intend to publish and analyse the about 1500 Roman vessels that were found in deposits, wells or chanels. The analysis of the pottery uncovered in a well in the central wing of the building complex, which would offer exact information on the spectrum of the second half of the 1 st century AD and the early 2nd century. We could determine the ratio of imported and local, Central Italian wares, the exact amount of kitchen and table wares and vessels used for storing. The pottery of the another well came to light from a filling from before the abandonment of the villa , it probably contains the pottery of the second half of the 3rd century. According to former observations the proportion of imported ware, especially ones from North Africa, is much higher, which can be explained by the degradation of local pottery centres and the general decline of economic life in Italy

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The publications of Roman pottery materials are practically missing in Central Italy, so the deposit finds of San Potito could help the creation of a firm basis to identify the source and chronology of the pottery in the Abruzzo region and the provinces that maintained a strong contact with it. In order to determine the analytic features of the Roman pottery found in the villa we would order neutron activation analysis of about fifty samples in the Nuclear Technical Institute of the Technical University of Budapest. This analysis would provide data on the number and production technology of the probable workshops and to determine the production programm of the several production centres. Our analytical results could be compare with ones of the already known Central Italian workshops (e.g. Ostia, Roma-La Celsa, Scoppieto), so we can attempt to identify the productions centres of our pottery. We attempt to determine the ratio of the imported and the local, Central Italian ware in the several periods of the villa, and how was changed the commercial relations and intensity of the trade during the centuries of the occupation of the villa?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

By publishing the pottery of the villa and its more exact dating we can follow the changing in the settlement pattern of the Abruzzi region. On base of the well dated pottery we get information about changing during historical periods of the area. We can get information about how many villas were abandoned in critical time at the end of 3rd century an how many settlements survived this crisis period.
By research of the Roman pottery we can more exactly date the time of destruction and abandonment of the villa , so we can insert these events in real historical framework.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

In Central Italy at the village San Potito di Ovindoli between 1983 and 2009 we unearthed a large, luxurious Roman villa with mosaic-pavements and nice wall paintings. Our excavation has been the first one in Italy, carried out by Hungarian archaeologists. In this villa we found a lot of pottery, from this material the deposit finds are very important for us (found in wells and chanels). Their spectrum offers information on exact quantity and ratio of kitchen pottery, table-ware and vessels for transportations. By these research we can be informed on rate of imported pottery (from the far North Africa) and local pottery made in production centres in the area of this villa. On base of these results we get information on commercial life of the villa and changing in trade. The pottery helps to date more exactly the periods of the constructions of the villa, the phases of the occupation from middle of the 1st century until the end of 3rd century AD. We would like to publish our results in scietific papers and in a video film.

A villa keleti oldalán feltárt kút edény-anyaga az I.sz második feléből ill. a II. sz elejéről származik. A kerámiáknak csupán 0,5 %-a importált edény; 6,4 %-a vékonyfalú ill. bevonatos kerámia. A harmadik leletegyüttesben hispaniai amphora, la graufesenque-i sigillata került elő égésrétegben, valamint Flavius-Trajanus kori házi kerámia. Ennek a leletegyüttesnek 7,8 %-a volt finom kerámia. Közöltük a villa valamennyi mécsesét használhattak. A petrográfiai vizsgálatok során 5 csoportot lehetett meghatározni, közülük kettőben vulkanikus eredetű komponensek voltak, ami közép-itáliai eredetre utal.
We could more precisely determine the chronology and periodisation of the Roman villa, which also included the publication of the complete coin material of the site. We could determine the function of a building of the villa as a cold storage. We presented the pottery from three deposits, from a well, a cistern and a burnt layer. The well yielded pottery dating from the 2nd half of the 1st centiry and the beginning of 2nd century. Only 0,5 % of the deposit contained imported pottery. In the filling of a cistern located in the middle of the northern courtyard only one item of North African red slip ware was found. The fill of the cistern established in the later phase of the villa dated from the second half of the 3rd centory. However the pottery found in this deposit is composed of types from the AD 1st and 2nd century. In the burnt layer Hispanian amphora and South Gaulish samian were unearthed as well coarse pottery dating from the Flavian-Trajanic period. The pottery could be divided into 5 petrographic groups. Two of them were tempered with clasts of volcanic origin from Central Italy. The most majority of the pottery analysed by NAA method originated from the same area, they were probably local products.
