magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Az arzén geokémiai viselkedése jól ismert mind a rétegvizekben, beleértve a magyarországi ivóvizes rétegek vizét, mind pedig a vulkáni aktivitáshoz kötött termálvizekben. Üledékes környezet termálvizeinek arzéntartalmáról ugyanakkor kevés ismeret áll rendelkezésre. Jelen projektben ezzel a kevéssé kutatott kérdéssel kívánunk foglalkozni, és a termálvizek arzéntartalmának kialakításában szerepet játszó tényezőket szeretnénk meghatározni az Alföld termálvizeiben. A munka során a következő részkérdéseket tisztázzuk:

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A Pannon-medence rétegvizeinek arzéntartalmával foglalkozó publikációink idézettsége jelzi a magyarországi arzénes vizek iránti érdeklődést. Jelen projekt témája egy olyan terület, az arzén geokémiai viselkedése üledékes medencék termálvizeiben, mely kevéssé kutatott. Munkánk során elsősorban azokra a kérdésekre szeretnénk választ kapni, hogy milyen jelentősége van a hidrogeológiai környezetnek, kontaktidőnek, hőmérsékletnek, nyomásnak, szerves anyagok átalakulásának és a redox viszonyoknak a termálvizek arzéntartalmára, és melyek a mobilizálódásban szerepet játszó folyamatok.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The aim of this project is to identify the factors that determine the amount of arsenic in thermal water of a sedimentary reservoir. The key questions are:
1. Determination of the concentration as well as the geographical and vertical distribution of arsenic in the thermal water.
2. Establishing the effect of the origin of water on the concentration of dissolved arsenic.
3. Demonstration of the impact of hydrogeological circumstances on the arsenic content of thermal water.
4. Explanation of the role of dissolved organics in the mobility of arsenic.

Chemical compositions and water stable isotopes will be analysed in thermal water samples from the Great Hungarian Plain. Location and depth of wells, and chemical composition and origin of water are the main points in choosing the wells. Field and laboratory analyses will be performed to measure major and minor ions, namely Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, NH4+, Sr2+, Li+, Ba2+, total Fe, total Mn, arsenic, Cl-, SO42-, PO43-, H4SiO4, HBO2, specific conductance, pH, alkalinity, chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon, redox potential and 2H and 18O δ values.

As the main goal of the project we intend to develop models describing the source and evolution of arsenic in deep sedimentary environments, but in diverse geological and hydrogeological settings.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Earlier, in the Holocene and Pleistocene layers of the Great Hungarian Plain we accomplished detailed investigations concerning the geochemical behaviour of arsenic, and as a result, we have developed the model of the accumulation-mobilization processes. In this project we intend to continue our work with the arsenic dissolved in subsurface water. Our hypothesis is that the significance of factors controlling the concentration of dissolved arsenic in the deep, thermal water aquifers differs from that of the shallower, Holocene and Pleistocene layers, due to different circumstances like chemical composition of water, pressure, redox conditions, temperature, dissolved organics and sediment material. Furthermore, the thermal waters themselves represent diverse hydraulic units, in which the factors and processes controlling the arsenic concentration might be different. The main research question is: what are the most important processes and factors controlling the mobility of arsenic in deep sedimentary reservoirs?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

A great number of relevant publications indicate that the geochemistry of arsenic generates a significant interest in the international scientific community. Numerous citations of the publications describing the arsenic geochemistry in the Holocene and Pleistocene layers in the central part of the Pannonian Basin (Great Hungarian Plain) demonstrate the importance of this problem. Significance of the present project is due the lack of publications about the arsenic behavior in deep sedimentary environments. While there are numerous publications dealing with arsenic in thermal water connected to volcanic activity, little is known about the geochemistry of arsenic in the thermal water of sedimentary reservoirs. This work will contribute to a better understanding of the arsenic mobilization and help to explain the effect of the hydrogeological circumstances, contact time, temperature, redox conditions, organic transformation, sediment material and the origin of water on the mobilization of arsenic in thermal water aquifers in sedimentary environments.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

A rapid growth in research on arsenic occurrence and behaviour in the environment has occurred over the last two decades. Environmental arsenic problems have been recognized and documented in numerous countries across the world. It is obvious that knowledge about the arsenic content of water is important not only from an academic but also from a practical point of view. Worldwide investigations are focused on processes controlling arsenic mobility in groundwater and aquifers, due to a potential threat to health. Since the 1980’s several surveys have been carried out in Hungary to assess the arsenic in drinking water and to establish its prevalence. It has been established that in certain regions the arsenic content is higher than the acceptable limit for drinking water, and about half a million consumers are affected by this problem.

The aim of this project is to reveal the processes and factors responsible for the observable arsenic distribution in deep sedimentary environments. The study area is the Great Hungarian Plain, part of the Pannonian Basin, where numerous thermal water wells are used for energetic and balneological purposes. Although in most cases the thermal waters in sedimentary reservoirs are considerably poorer in arsenic than the groundwaters, the arsenic concentration may still exceed the health limit for drinking water, and may lead to health and environmental harm. Due to its toxic effects, an elevated arsenic concentration might limit the balneological utilization of thermal water. Moreover, thermal water is less favourable also for energetic utilization when, due to the high arsenic content, it must not be re-injected.

Spatial distribution of dissolved arsenic in the subsurface water from the near surface to 2500 m depth and factors which are responsible for the distribution of arsenic were determined in this study. It was established that the highest concentrations (up to 180 mg/l) are found in the fluviatile sediment, in the upper 500 m of the sedimentary sequence. In the deep formation water the arsenic concentration is lower (maximum 80 mg/l). The factors controlling the concentration of dissolved arsenic are different in the aquifers of different depth and locations due to different circumstances. In the mobilizing process pH, and redox potential were the most important factors, and poorly crystallized FeOOH mineral and dissolved humic substances are involved in the processes. Pattern of the samples on the pH-pe diagrams were compared to the pH-pe stability diagrams of the As-O-H, Fe-CO2-H2O and semiquinone-hydroquinone systems of standard state, and it was established that in particular groundwater samples redox equilibrium does exist, and the redox reaction consisting of the As(III) – As(V) and hydroquinone – semiquinone half reactions controls the measured redox potential.
