magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

További célunk annak megállapítása vajon megújuló nyersanyagforrásból származó adalékok (pl. cellulóz, növényi kaucsuk) milyen hatásfokkal veszik fel a versenyt a szintetikusokkal.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás jelentősége kettős.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Ezzel egyidejűleg azonban a rideg törésre való hajlam fokozódik. A technológia egészségre ártalmatlan (szemben a nanoméretű részecskékből álló porok bevitelével). A munka során különös tekintettel vagyunk környezetvédelmi, “zöld” szempontokra.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Thermoplastic nanocomposites containing different nanofillers are preferentially produced by melt compounding and possess outstanding mechanical performance except toughness. This project is devoted to develop a novel extrusion melt-compounding method to manufacture tough nanocomposites by introducing both the toughener and reinforcement in suspensions. Toughening occurs via dispersion of “preformed” rubber particles from latex systems. As nanoscale reinforcements water swellable (layered silicates) and dispersible additives (boehmite, cellulose) will be mostly used. The carrier (water and other fluids) of the above additives will be evaporated during extrusion. The use such suspension media for the nanofillers which remain in the polymer and act as plasticizer later on, will also be followed (e.g. thermoplastic starch). Property tailoring targets simultaneously enhanced stiffness, strength and toughness properties. This goal will be achieved by varying the type and amount of the nanofillers and tougheners. As matrices of the nanocomposites only semicrystalline polymers, viz. polyamide, polypropylene, starch and polylactic acid, and their blends will serve. The structure-property relationships of the nanocomposites, produced by compression and injection molding after melt compounding, will be studied by state-of-art techniques.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Basic question of the planned project is to shed light on whether the stiffness, strength and toughness of thermoplastic nanocomposites can be simultaneously enhanced compared to those of the matrix, and if yes, whether it can be achieved in line during extrusion melt compounding. Our hypothesis is that this goal can be reached, in fact, by suspension assisted melt compounding of suitable reinforcing and toughening additives, introduced in their suspensions into the extruder. The additives become nanoscale dispersed in the matrix polymer after evaporation/removal of the carrier suspension fluid. This is not even necessary in some cases (e.g. preparation and modification of TPS) to which peculiar attention will be devoted. A further aim of the project is to compare the efficiency of additives from renewable resources (cellulose, natural rubber) with those of synthetic origins thereby supporting sustainability. Based on the results attempt will be made to deduce a morphology model which is linked with well-balanced stiffness, strength and toughness, desired by engineering use.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The significance of the project is twofold. From scientific point of view the morphology model to be deduced, even when schematic, is of great relevance for the property tailoring of thermoplastic nanocomposites. From practical point of view the suspension assisted melt compounding can be easily and fast implemented in the industrial praxis where extrusion compounding is widely used. Further, it can be easily scaled up upon request. The proposed strategy has further benefits. Incorporation of preformed nanosized particles (e.g. silica), when practiced according to the usual way (i.e. direct feeding), is associated with sever health hazard. This can be circumvented in an elegant way by making use of the suspension technique. Moreover, by suitable selection of suspension fluids, along with their proper pretreatment options, may open a bright horizon for the property modification of polymers via extrusion melt compounding, including its reactive versions (this issue we would like to keep, however, “obscure”).

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Plastics containing nanoscaled fillers and additives, termed to “nanocomposites”, exhibit many beneficial properties over the versions modified with micro- and macroscaled additives. Nanocomposites possess improved properties not only with respect to mechanical but also to other (thermal, fire resistance, barrier) characteristics. The advent of nanocomposites is that the same level of property profile can be achieved with substantially lower amount of nanofillers than by micro- or macroscaled variants. This is associated with density decrease and thus allows lightweight construction for engineering parts. Nanofillers have prominent reinforcing effect. Accordingly their stiffness and strength are improved, however, at cost of the toughness. Therefore it is imperative to enhance the toughness of nanocomposites. This means compromising the stiffness, strength and toughness. Exactly this is the aim of this project. It was proposed that adapting the suspension mediated melt compounding, whereby introducing both reinforcement and toughener from their suspensions, nanocomposites with the required property profile can be produced. The proposed technology has no health hazard by contrast to the direct feeding of dry nanoparticles (e.g. silica) that is widely practiced. Further, the research strategy considers environmental, “green” issues. This occurs by selecting the nanofiller (cellulose), toughener (natural rubber) and polymers to be modified (starch, polylactic acid) – all of them derived from renewable resources. The expected results, i.e. property improvements of the latter “natural” polymers, may contribute to their market penetration and acceptance.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
A kutatás során hőre lágyuló polimer mátrixú nanokompozitokat állítottunk elő vizes közegben eloszlatott, alkalmas nanoméretű adalékanyagok segítségével.
This project was aimed at producing thermoplastic nanocomposites via water-mediated melt compounding of suitable nanofillers. Water-swellable (such as layered silicates /bentonite, montmorillonite/) or water dispersible nanofillers (such as boehmite alumina, micro- and nanocellulose, graphene oxide) in their aqueous dispersion were introduced in selected thermoplastics. Accordingly, water served as provisional career fluid for the related nanofillers because it was evaporated/eliminated during compounding. This kind of new manufacturing process of thermoplastic nanocomposites was introduced in an open access review paper. The work was expanded also for solvent-assisted incorporation of graphene derivatives in a thermoplastic fluoropolymer, viz. polytetrafluoro ethylene (PTFE) that cannot be processed via melting. Works were performed using various thermoplastic polymers, such as polypropylene, polyamide, and thermoplastic starch, and their blends. Attempts were also made to produce nanoreinforced and via the latex route simultaneously toughened nanocomposites. The structure-property relationships of the related systems were studied by state-of-art methods.
