A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

"Risk, Ambiguity, and the Savage Axioms". "Subjective Probability and Expected Utility without Additivity". Ennek a megközelítésnek egy interpretációja a többes prior modell (multiple priors, Gilboa, I. and D. Schmeidler, (1989) "Maxmin expected utility with non-unique prior". Journal of Mathematical Economics 18 (2): 141–153.). A többes prior interpretáció szerint a nem additív valószínűség valójában több lehetséges additív (Bayesi) vélekedés tömörített formája.
A nem kooperatív játékelmélet két legfontosabb megoldáskoncepciója a Nash-egyensúly (Nash, J. (1950) "Equilibrium points in n-person games" Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 36(1):48-49., Nash, J. (1951) "Non-Cooperative Games" The Annals of Mathematics 54(2):286-295.) és a racionalizálhatóság (Bernheim, D. (1984) "Rationalizable Strategic Behavior". Econometrica 52: 1007-1028., Pearce, D. (1984) "Rationalizable Strategic Behavior and the Problem of Perfection". Econometrica 52: 1029-1050.). A kutatás fő célja ennek a két megoldáskoncepciónak a vizsgálata (létezés, unicitás, stb.) nem additív (nem Bayesi) vélekedésű játékosok esetén.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A pontatlan valószínűség (ambiguity) segítségével jobban megérthetjük világunkat, társadalmunkat. Kiinduló hipotézisünk a többes prior megközelítés, ennek a megközelítésnek a játékelméleti beágyazását célozza a kutatás. A felvetett problémák a következők: (1) a Nash-egyensúly (és variánsai) és a racionalizálhatóság vizsgálata (létezés, unicitás, stb.) pontatlan (nem additív) valószínűségek esetén. (2) Az irodalomban ismertek eredmények a Nash-egyensúlyra vonatkozóan (pl. Riedel, F. and Sass, L. (2011) "The Strategic Use of Ambiguity". Institute of Mathematical Economics w.p. No. 452), de ezek a megközelítések nem adnak meggyőző interpretációját a nem additív vélekedéseknek (az egyetlen kivétel Battigalli et al. (2015) „Selfconfirming Equilibrium and Model Uncertainty” AER, megjelenés alatt, v.ö. a kutatási tervvel). Mit jelent egy nem additív kevert stratégia? Ez a kérdések tudomásunk szerint nyitottak. Célunk, hogy a hagyományos kevert stratégia-interpretációkra támaszkodva (lsd. pl. Harsanyi, J.C. (1973) "Games with randomly disturbed payoffs: a new rationale for mixed-strategy equilibrium points". IJGT 2:1–23. és Aumann. R. and Brandenburger, A. (1995) "Epistemic Conditions for Nash Equilibrium".

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Egy egyszerű példát véve (Dow, J., Werlang, SRdC (1992) "Uncertainty aversion, risk aversion, and the optimal choice of portfolio". Egy empirikus kutatást idézve (Cabantous, L. (2007) "Ambiguity Aversion in the Field of Insurance: Insurers’ Attitude to Imprecise and Conflicting Probability Estimates". Theory and Decision 62 (3): 219-240.) a pontatlan valószínűség megjelenése, illetve mértékének növekedése jelentősen (és mérhetően) megváltoztatja a professzionális döntéshozók viselkedését. A kutatások közvetetten hatással lehetnek a társadalmi és gazdasági folyamatok megértésére és modellezhetőségére, sőt műszaki alkalmazásuk is lehetséges (Neumaier, A. et al. (2007) "Application of clouds for modeling uncertainties in robust space system design". ESA, Ariadna ID:05/5201 , Contract Number: 19703//06/NL/HE ). A tervezett kutatás alapkutatási célzott hatása a következő. A pontatlan valószínűség fogalma mára a döntéselméletben elfogadottá vált, míg a játékelméletben még kevés példát találunk alkalmazására. Talán a legfőbb akadály a játékelméleti alkalmazás előtt a szemléletes interpretáció. Additív valószínűségek (Bayesi megközelítés) esetén a kevert stratégia "hitelesen" interpretálható, mint pl. valamiféle véletlen stratégia. Nincs ilyen interpretáció nem additív valószínűségekre (pontatlan valószínűség). A kutatás fő célja ennek az akadálynak a jobb megértése, lehetőleg az eltakarítása.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A tervezett kutatás célja a pontatlan valószínűség fogalmának játékelméleti alkalmazása, a nem additív kevert stratégia jobb megértése, illetve meggyőző játékelméleti magyarázata. A kutatás eredményeképpen közelebb jutunk társadalmi és gazdasági jelenségek megértéséhez, pl. pénzügyi piacok működése, sőt az alkalmazott fogalmaknak mérnöki alkalmazásai is ismertek, pl. berendezések megbízhatósági kérdésének vizsgálata.
angol összefoglaló
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

According to the Bayesian approach in decision theory the uncertainty a decision maker faces can be described by a probability distribution. This probability distribution is the decision maker's subjective belief. The Ellsberg paradox (Ellsberg, D. (1961). "Risk, Ambiguity, and the Savage Axioms". Quarterly Journal of Economics 75 (4): 643–669.) shows that there are situations where the Bayesian approach is not adequate. In Schmeidler's model (Schmeidler, D. (1989). "Subjective Probability and Expected Utility without Additivity". Econometrica 57 (3): 571–587.) the decision maker's subjective belief is given by a non-additive probability (capacity). An interpretation of the non-additive probability is the multiple priors approach (Gilboa, I. and D. Schmeidler, (1989) "Maxmin expected utility with non-unique prior". Journal of Mathematical Economics 18 (2): 141–153.), roughly, it says a non-additive belief is a "summary" of multiple Bayesian (additive) beliefs. The two most important solution concepts of non-cooperative game theory are the Nash equilibrium (Nash, J. (1950) "Equilibrium points in n-person games" Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 36(1):48-49., Nash, J. (1951) "Non-Cooperative Games" The Annals of Mathematics 54(2):286-295.) and the rationalizability (Bernheim, D. (1984) "Rationalizable Strategic Behavior". Econometrica 52: 1007-1028., Pearce, D. (1984) "Rationalizable Strategic Behavior and the Problem of Perfection". Econometrica 52: 1029-1050.). The main goal of the proposed research is to consider these two solution concepts when ambiguity is present, that is, when the players' beliefs are given by non-additive probabilities.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Many experiments and observations indicate that the Bayesian approach is not appropriate in certain situations. The notion of ambiguity allows us to understand deeper our society and economy. Our benchmark is the multiple priors approach, and our main goal is to apply it in game theory. The proposed research problems are as follows: (1) Considering the Nash equilibrium (and the likes) and the concept of rationalizability, existence, uniqueness, etc., when the players' beliefs are described by non-additive probabilities (ambiguity is present). (2) There are related results in the literature (see e.g. Riedel, F. and Sass, L. (2011) "The Strategic Use of Ambiguity". Institute of Mathematical Economics w.p. No. 452) but these papers do not give convincing interpretations of non-additive beliefs in the game theory setting, that is, of the non-additive mixed strategies (the only exception is Battigalli et al. (2015) “Selfconfirming Equilibrium and Model Uncertainty” AER, forthcoming, consult the Research Plan). What does a non-additive mixed strategy mean? Up to our knowledge this interpretation problem is widely open. Our goal is to give a convincing interpretation of non-additive mixed strategies by considering the interpretations of ordinary, additive mixed strategies (Harsanyi. J.C. (1973) "Games with randomly disturbed payoffs: a new rationale for mixed-strategy equilibrium points". IJGT 2: 1–23., and Aumann. R. and Brandenburger, A. (1995) "Epistemic Conditions for Nash Equilibrium". Econometrica 63 (5): 1161-1180. among others). (3) By considering the concepts of Nash equilibrium and rationalizability we can understand both and their relations in case of ambiguity.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

By the notion of ambiguity (non-additive beliefs) we can understand social, economic and engineering problems and phenomena better. Taking a simple example (Dow, J., Werlang, SRdC (1992) "Uncertainty aversion, risk aversion, and the optimal choice of portfolio". Econometrica 60 (1): 197-204.) if ambiguity is present, more precisely if the agents are ambiguity averse, then typically the market clearing price is not unique, rather it is from a closed and bounded interval, that is, each point of the interval can be a price of equilibrium. By citing an empirical study (Cabantous, L. (2007) "Ambiguity Aversion in the Field of Insurance: Insurers’ Attitude to Imprecise and Conflicting Probability Estimates". Theory and Decision 62 (3): 219-240.) we can see if ambiguity is present or it grows then the behavior of professional decision makers changes (significantly). E.g. if two (partially) contradictory reports come out about a company, then it is more expensive to finance the company from the financial market than in case of there is no ambiguity (contradictory reports) about the company. The proposed research is a basic research, so we cannot mention any direct application of the research. Indirect impacts, however, covers social, economic and engineering (see e.g. Neumaier, A. et al. (2007) "Application of clouds for modeling uncertainties in robust space system design". ESA, Ariadna ID:05/5201 , Contract Number: 19703//06/NL/HE ) problems. The proposed research's impact on basic research is the following. The notion of ambiguity and non-additive beliefs are widely used and accepted in the modern decision theory literature. In game theory, however, these notions are not applied yet (except some very rear exceptions). In our opinion the highest hurdle of the application of these notions is the missing convincing interpretation of non-additive mixed strategy. In case of additive beliefs there are convincing interpretations (of mixes strategies), up to our knowledge similar convincing interpretation is missing for non-additive beliefs (mixed strategies). The main goal of the proposed project is to understand deeper and to eliminate this hurdle.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

According to the Bayesian approach in case of uncertainty the decision maker's subjective belief is given by a probability distribution, that is, the decision maker assigns a non-negative number (probability) to each outcome. By considering the Ellsberg paradox, however, we can see that if the probability of an outcome (event) is not known precisely (ambiguity), then the Bayesian approach fails. The Ellsberg paradox is an example for a situation where ambiguity is present. To model an ambiguous situation one can apply non-additive (non-Bayesian) probabilities.
Game theory considers multi-agent decision problems. It seems very natural to adapt the notion of non-additive belief to game theory. There are already some examples for it in the game theory literature, but the breakthrough is still ahead. In our opinion the most important problem which prevents the application be prevalent is the missing convincing interpretation of non-additive mixed strategy, e.g. what a non-additive mixed strategy is the one which assigns zero to each (pure) strategy? How can we interpret it? The goal of the proposed research is to apply the notions of ambiguity and non-additive beliefs in game theory, and to understand deeper the games with ambiguity. By the result of this research we can have a more subtle understanding of our society and economics, e.g. financial markets, and more, ambiguity is applied in engineering too, e.g. for modeling uncertainties in robust system design.
