magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Mivel a légkör-ökoszisztéma kapcsolatrendszer ökoszisztémánként más-más képet mutat, a talaj-növényzet rendszer környezeti tényezőkkel szembeni érzékenységének vizsgálata nagy jelentőséggel bír a klímaváltozás lehetséges hatásainak becslésében.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A klímaváltozás ökológiai rendszerekre gyakorolt hatásának vizsgálatára igen alkalmas módszer a terepi klímaváltozás kísérlet, ahol a klimatológusok által a jövőre jósolt hőmérsékleti illetve csapadékviszonyok állíthatók be kísérleti parcellákon. A kezelések a Kiskunsági Nemzeti Park természetközeli, fehér nyár cserjés, illetve nyílt gyepi állományaiban folynak, és elősegítik a jövőbeni klímaváltozással kapcsolatos ökológiai kérdések megválaszolását. Tervezett kutatásomban a fenti állományok talajának és növényzetének szénforgalmát, a szénforgalom komponenseinek nagyságát és egymáshoz viszonyított arányát kívánom meghatározni (mint a növényzet CO2 elnyelése a fotoszintézis során, a talaj CO2 kibocsátása a lebontó folyamatok és a növényi gyökerek légzése során, valamint a növényzet légzése). Vizsgálnám ezen komponensek környezeti tényezőkkel (hőmérséklet, csapadék) való kapcsolatát, így a várható klímaváltozásra adott válaszukat is. Emellett a mérési adatok alapján általános ökoszisztéma anyagforgalmi modellek futásának eredményeit is vizsgálni kívánom. Kutatásaim várhatóan elősegítik a homoki erdőssztyeppben a talajminőséggel és a légköri szén-dioxid elnyelésével kapcsolatos egyes ökoszisztéma szolgáltatások becslését.
angol összefoglaló
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The measure of the intensive carbon fluxes between the atmosphere and the ecosystems is one order of magnitude greater than the carbon efflux of industrial origin. Grassland ecosystems may have an important role in alteration of global carbon exchange, due to their significant extent and high sensitivity to climate change. In these ecosystems the study of net ecosystem exchange (NEE), and its processes as dark respiration, soil respiration and gross primary production, may reveal the relationships between ecosystem carbon cycle and the main environmental factors as meteorology, soil organic matter, and plant cover. It may furthermore reveal in longer term the possible responses to the anticipated climate change. In the forest-steppe vegetation of the Kiskunság we are conducting climate simulation experiments for more years. In a poplar shrubland an international experimental site has been established, where the treatments are nocturnal warming, and rain exclusion (INCREASE). The other experiment has been built in an open grassland, and here we study individual and interactive effects of an extreme drought and chronic alteration of precipitation (ExDrain). One of my objectives is, based on the methodology elaborated in international cooperation, to quantify NEE and its components, and modeling their temperature and moisture dependence. I also aim at quantifying the annual course and annual rates of the carbon exchange components, and revealing their relationships with soil organic matter and plant cover. Besides, based on these measurements and the resulted empirical models, I plan the calibration and validation of the Biome-BGC MuSo biogeophysical model for grasslands.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The white poplar shrublands and the open grasslands of the sandy forest-steppe ecotone of Kiskunság has a coarse-textured sandy soil (Calcaric arenosol, FAO) with low organic matter content (<1%), and therefore an extreme water and heat regime. How the dynamics and volume of the carbon cycle in the semiarid sandy vegetations could be characterized under current climate regime, and how could be predicted its possible changes with climate in the future?
Specific questions:
What are the characteristics of the relations of the main components of the carbon cycle (net ecosystem exchange, dark respiration, soil respiration, gross primary production) and their seasonal and interannual courses in the studied stands?
How the intensity and volume of the main components of the carbon cycle are affected by environmental factors as temperature, soil moisture, soil organic matter, and plant cover?
How these relationships can be modelled empirically and by the biogeophysical modelling tools?
In the light of the predicted changes in temperature and precipitation for the future, how relative contributions of the components of the carbon cycle to NEE will alter?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The carbon-dioxide efflux of terrestrial soils and vegetation are the most important sources of the atmospheric carbon having an elementary impact on the climate of the Earth. As the atmosphere-ecosystem relationships differ in different ecosystems, studies on the sensitivity of soil-vegetation system to the environmental factors are of high importance in estimations of possible impacts of climate change. Grasslands and transitional ecosystems make up around 40% of the terrestrial ecosystems. Their significance in global carbon cycle lies in their high sensitivity to predicted climate and other global (e.g. land use) changes. These habitats may be not only carbon sinks, but depending on actual weather conditions and land use they may also be net carbon sources. In situ climate change experiments are highly appropriate for investigating the impacts of future climate conditions, because the extended variability of environmental factors (enhanced temperature, altered precipitation) makes it possible to predict short-term and long-term impacts of future climate change on soil-plant systems. Under these circumstances, results of the planned stand level ecosystem exchange studies and also the results of the empirical modeling, as good as the parameterisation and validation of the Biome-BGC MuSo biogeophysical ecosystem model may be extrapolated in time and space, and present a good opportunity to make difference between impacts of climate change and other factors. In the frame of the cooperation established during the EU FP5 and FP7 VULCAN and INCREASE projects, it is possible to compare the results with other European partners, to put the results into European context, and to interpret them under the European climate gradient. My studies expectedly support the estimation of some ecosystem services, related to the soil quality and the atmospheric carbon sink in the sandy forest-steppe.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The intensive carbon gas exchange between the atmosphere and the ecosystems has a measure one order higher than the industrial carbon efflux. For investigating the impacts of climate change on ecological systems, field-based climate change experiments offer a good opportunity. In the present case, this is executed by automatically retractable roofs above plots. In some plots we exclude precipitation, and thus simulate drought. In other plots we prevent heat reradiation, and thus simulate warming. Further plots are watered, simulating extra precipitation. Treatments have been running in the Kiskunság National Park in a seminatural, white poplar shrubland and in an open grassland, and promote responding ecological questions related to the future climate change. In the research I would execute, I plan to study the total carbon cycle, and the carbon cycle components of the soil and vegetation of the above ecosystems (sink of CO2 by the vegetation through photosynthesis, CO2 emission of the soil during decomposition processes, and root respiration of plants), quantifying their intensity and rates related to each other. I would also study the relationships of these components with environmental factors (temperature, precipitation), drawing conclusions on their responses to the predicted climate change. Furthermore, I aim at quantifying of annual course and annual rates of the carbon exchange components, and based on collected data, I plan the analysis of general ecosystem matter and energy flow models. My studies may support the estimation of ecosystem services, related to the soil quality and the atmospheric carbon sink of the sandy forest-steppe.

A szénforgalom modellezése különböző vízellátottságú gyepekben megmutatta a változó talajvízszint integrálásának jelentőségét a modellbe. Ezen kívül a mért adatokkal való kalibráció a szárazabb gyepeknél jobban növelte a modell teljesítményét, mint a nedves gyepeknél.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
During the study across three vegetation periods, in two climate experimental fields (an open sand grassland and a grassland mosaic with white poplar sprouts), I accomplished the following field measurrement: soil CO2 efflux and ecosystem gas exchange, micrometeorological variables. Furthermore, I took more times soil examples for soil chemical investigations. In the open sand grassland the rate of soil CO2 efflux may increase with increasing temperature only to a certain extent, around 30°C soil surface temperature. In addition, CO2 efflux is influenced by the soil moisture content. Also, the volume of the carbon cycling is limited by the low nutrient content of the soil. Both extreme and moderated drought decreased, while irrigation increased soil respiration rate, but only temporarely. These effects were no more detectable in the next year. Modeling carbon cycle in grasslands of different water availability showed the importance of integrating groundwater level in the model. We also found that the calibration of model by field measurement data enhanced the model performance, rather for dry grasslands than wet grasslands.
