magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A munka további célja CR-tartalmú hőre lágyuló elasztomer előállítása mégpedig reciklálandó poliolefin felhasználásával. Ezzel kapcsolatos analógiaként a termoplasztikus dinamikus vulkanizátumok szolgálnak. Ez utóbbiak mátrixa többnyire hőre lágyuló poliolefin amelyben finoman eloszlatott gumiszemcsék találhatók. A gumiszemcsék a kaucsuk keverés során fellépő szelektív vulkanizációjában képződnek. Noha ezen gumiszemcsék mérete lényegesen kisebb (szubmikrométer tartomány) mint a CR-é (tizedmilliméter-milliméter), elképzelésünk szerint devulkanizált CR jelenlétében, friss kaucsuk adagolással és ez utóbbi dinamikus vulkanizációjában igen jó tulajdonságú hőre lágyuló elasztomer gyártható. Eldöntendő kérdés tehát, hogy a fenti analógia valóban helytálló-e, azaz a CR helyettesíteni képes-e a hőre lágyuló dinamikus vulkanizátum bizonyos elasztomerhányadát.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A másik fő cél nagy hozzáadott értékű termék előállítása hőre lágyuló, megömlesztés útján többszörösen újrafeldolgozható elasztomer formájában. Feltételezésünk szerint ilyen elasztomerek nagy CR-tartalom mellett is gyárthatók. Bennük a mikrohullámú térben kezelt CR a friss kaucsukot teljesen vagy részben helyettesítheti a kívánt gumi rugalmasság biztosítása mellett.
angol összefoglaló
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The economic recycling of used rubber products (tyres, conveyer-belt, production scrap) is a great challenge nowadays. Material recycling is the preferred way supported by legislative actions and economical/ecological arguments. Incorporation of crumb rubber (CR) in vulcanizable rubbers and thermoplastic resins is accompanied with prominent degradation in the mechanical properties. The extent of latter in a given rubber or thermoplastic system depends on the CR particle size and on its incorporated amount. Economical use of CR fractions requires that instead of using costly polymeric compatibilizers the surface of CR particles should be “activated”. This covers also the creation of dangled molecular chains which may entangle with those of the matrix thereby producing a strong interphase which guarantees improved mechanical performance. Our research strategy is to break up the sulphur crosslinked network and thus generate “active” molecules by microwave devulcanization of the CR before adding it in selected rubbers and thermoplastics. Accordingly, the project is devoted to the recycling and “upcycling” of microwave decomposed CR in rubber and thermoplastic resin-based recipes, respectively. Upcycling means the production of a value-added product, namely CR-containing thermoplastic rubbers. Major targets are: i) to enhance the amount of CR that can be added in fresh rubber without property penalty, and ii) to develop CR-containing thermoplastic rubbers which may compete with present commercial types based on their favorable property/cost balance.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Basic question of the planned project is whether or not thermoplastic and thermoset (vulcanizable) rubbers with useful mechanical properties can be produced with highly enhanced amount of CR, devulcanized by microwave. A further question is whether a CR-containing thermoplastic rubber with favorable properties can be produced via extrusion melt compounding. As thermoplastic matrix material we shall consider recycled polyolefin grades. CR devulcanization should be achieved in microwave oven because the related energy is high enough to break the C-S and S-S bonds of the crosslinked network. Our hypothesis is that the regeneration of the above bonds is hampered by the adherence of the newly formed molecules on the carbonaceous fillers in CR. A further goal of the project is the production of thermoplastic rubbers with high CR contents. This strategy is fuelled by the analogy with thermoplastic dynamic vulcanizates. The latter are composed of a continuous thermoplastic phase in which small fully cured rubber particles in submicron range are dispersed. This is achieved via selective crosslinking of the rubber during melt mixing with the thermoplastic (therefore the term “dynamic” curing by contrast to the traditional “static” one). Though the size range of the rubber particles is at least one order of magnitude smaller that of CR, we are convinced that suitable thermoplastic rubbers can be produced by the combination of devulcanized CR and fresh, selective vulcanizable rubber. Accordingly, the next open question is whether microwave devulcanized CR can replace a substantial amount of fresh rubber in the related recipe.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Beside of obvious societal and ecological aspects (waste management, deposition of worn tyres), the project is highly relevant from both scientific and practical viewpoints. From scientific point of view the followings have to be underlined: i) determination of the extent of microwave devulcanization of different GRs to guarantee strong bonding between the CR particles and the actual matrix thereby clarifying whether and in what extent the related relation is matrix-dependent, ii) assessing how the conditions of the microwave devulcanization affect the stability of the sol fraction (representing the flexible molecular chains) and how the latter depends in function of storage time and rubber recipe, and iii) what is the maximum amount of decomposed CR that can be incorporated into a given matrix without significantly deteriorating its properties. The results can be easily and fast implemented in the industrial praxis where melt compounding (batch-wise and continuously) is widely used. Moreover, the microwave devulcanization can be performed continuously and scaled up upon request. Continuous production through extrusion melt compounding is our goal for the development of thermoplastic rubbers containing treated CR. Our target is to give recommendations on which rubber(s) and which product(s) (e.g. type of tyres: personal car/truck, summer/winter) should be preferred for the proposed recycling route.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

To solve the recycling of used rubber products (e.g. tyres) is a key issue of the environmental protection. The public already shares the opinion of experts that rubber products are useful material feedstock and thus their material recycling should be pushed forward. This is supported by the fact that these products are crumbed and the related products (CR) are available in guaranteed quality on the market. The traditional application of CR is the covering of play crumbs and sporting places. This is however a saturated market though the CR fraction in the covers very high. The other option is to use the CR in bituminous systems for road construction. Accordingly, new routes and markets should be found for the recycling of CR. It is intuitive to incorporate CR in vulcanizable rubber recipes. However, this can be done up to a given threshold – even the finest CR fraction cannot be added in more than 10 wt% without loss in the mechanical performance. Our intention is to increase this amount by partial devulcanization of the CR particles in microwave oven. The dangling molecules, created on the surface by this treatment, may entangle with those of the matrix rubber and participate in the (re)vulcanization process. This should yield a strong interphase between the CR particles and the matrix and thus the CR content can be enhanced. A further aim of this project is to develop thermoplastic rubbers (i.e. reprocessable) containing microwave treated CR. This is a value-added approach, reasoning the term “upcycling” in the project’s title and represents a “green solution” according to the concept: transformation of a thermoset rubber to a thermoplastic one.

The outcome of this project can be interpreted from three different aspects: the effect of technological parameters on the efficiency of microwave devulcanization of crumb rubber, the effect of microwave devulcanized crumb rubber (dCR) on the properties of fresh rubber compounds, and the usability and effect of dCR on the properties of polypropylene (PP) based thermoplastic dynamic vulcanizates (TDVs). In terms of the effect of the technical parameters it was concluded that the final temperature of the crumb rubber at the end of microwave treatment is tightly related to the efficiency of the process and the presence of oxygen is highly beneficial. A preceding heat treatment is also beneficial, as well as a combined thermomechanical-microwave devulcanization technique. Regarding to the applicability of dCR in fresh rubber compounds our results drew attention to the fact, that dCR most likely to act as a plasticizer in fresh rubber compound, lowering the tensile strength and improving elongation at break in most cases. Results of the TDV development part of this project resulted in the following conclusions: (i) high performance TDVs can be produced using PP as a thermoplastic matrix and natural rubber/styrene butadiene rubber based compound as the rubber phase and (ii) 20% of this fresh compound can be replaced with dCR without a major loss in mechanical properties of the resulting TDV.
