A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Kutatásunk célja a kétdimenziós integrálható módszerek alkalmazása a holografikus dualitásra, ennek eredményeképp egzaktul megoldani a legegyszerűbb, erősen kölcsönható négydimenziós mértékelméletet.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Ezek ismerete elengedhetetlen a – gravitációt is magában foglaló – húrelmélet kvantálásához, melyet eddig kizárólag lapos háttéren sikerült megtenni.

Az általunk meghatározandó 3pt függvények nem csupán a legegyszerűbb, erősen kölcsönható rendszert írják le egzaktul, hanem a holografikus dualitási sejtést is alátámasztják.

A maximálisan szuperszimmetrikus modell megoldása új kutatási irányokat nyithat, hiszen azt referenciapontként használva kiterjeszthetjük a dualitást olyan, kevesebb szuperszimmetriával rendelkező, erősen csatolt rendszerekre, melyek jobban hasonlítanak a QCD-re.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The main aim of the project is to elaborate a program to determine exactly the three point (3pt) couplings of the simplest nontrivial 4 dimensional (4D) gauge theory. This theory, which is the maximally supersymmetric theory in 4 dimension, is conformal and considered to be the hydrogen atom of all gauge theories, including the theories of the strong and electroweak interactions. Together with the already determined scaling dimensions the 3pt couplings provide the missing fundamental data of this conformal field theory, from which it can be completely reconstructed.

The feasibility of the project derives from the fact that the 4D maximally supersymmetric gauge theory is holographically dual to string theory on the product of the 5D anti de Sitter space and the 5D sphere. As string theory on this background is described by an integrable two-dimensional quantum field theory, we can use our expertise, collected in the last twenty years on developing integrable methods, to exactly solve a non-perturbative 4D gauge theory in terms of its spectrum and correlation functions. We would like to push forward this program in a large international collaboration.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The electromagnetic, weak, strong and gravitational forces are the four fundamental interactions of Nature. The first two, unified by the electro-weak quantum gauge theory, have been tested with high accuracy. The strong interaction is also formulated as a gauge theory, QCD, but its strongly coupled nature circumvented its high precision tests, additionally, the gravitational interaction, formulated as a classical gauge theory, does not even have a satisfactory quantization.

The holographic duality gives a hope to understand the strong interaction and quantum gravity in one turn as it connects gauge theories with string theory (including gravity). As the duality relates strongly coupled gauge theories to semi-classical string theory and the deeply quantum string theory to perturbative gauge theory, it is hard to prove, it remained a conjecture.

The best chance to show the conjectured equivalence of gauge theories and string theory is the 't Hooft limit of the maximally supersymmetric gauge theory, as in this limit integrability of the two dimensional string theory shows up.

In the last twenty years, motivated by particle physics problems, there have been intensive research and relevant progress in two-dimensional integrable theories. These theories were solved by determining exactly the spectrum of particles and their scattering data which were then used to calculate the full spectrum at any finite size.

The objective of our research is to apply the two-dimensional integrable techniques to the holographic duality and as a result to solve exactly the simplest strongly interacting 4D gauge theory.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

In the last century the only available analytical tool to describe quantum field theories was perturbation theory. This technique proved to be useful in understanding the physics of elementary particles for weak couplings and resulted in many Nobel prizes. Strongly interacting theories, however, appear everywhere in physics ranging from the strong interactions to condensed matter systems, and phenomena, such as heavy-ion collisions, quark confinement and high-temperature superconductivity, all of which have resisted analytical solutions. We expect a breakthrough in these problems by taking a holographic view. Holography proved to be a revolutionary method to describe strongly-coupled systems, and it seems to be ushering in a new golden era in theoretical physics.

The strong coupling exact analysis should start by solving the simplest interactive 4D gauge theory, which is the maximally supersymmetric theory, the hydrogen atom of all gauge theories. This conformal field theory can be solved by determining all of its scaling dimensions and 3pt couplings. By exploiting that the holographic correspondence is integrable, we have already calculated the scaling dimensions, thus we plan to advance into the directions of the 3pt couplings. The 3pt couplings on the string theory side correspond to the amplitude of the process in which one big string splits into two small ones. Thus it provides the exact string interactions of the theory, which are required to develop the quantum theory of strings (gravity). This hasn't been achieved explicitly except for the flat background.

Our solutions for the 3pt functions not only solves the simplest strongly interacting 4D gauge theory, but also gives evidence for the conjectured holography.

The solution of the maximally supersymmetric model opens up new research avenues, since it can be used as a reference point to extend the holography for less supersymmetric strongly-coupled gauge theories that are more similar to QCD, possibly exhibiting a confining phase or (in lower dimensions) showing high-temperature superconductivity.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

All of the four fundamental interactions of Nature are formulated as gauge theories. Combining relativity with the necessity of quantum description requires that the interactions are intermediated by particles: the electromagnetic interaction is a result of photon, while the strong interaction of gluon exchanges. In contrast to the electromagnetic interactions, where the contributions of many photon exchanges are negligible, in the strong interactions they provide the dominant contributions, making impossible an adequate quantitative analysis. Additionally, gravity does not even have a proper quantum description.

A breakthrough in this field comes from a conjecture, which claims that gauge (gluonic) theories can be holograms of higher dimensional gravitational theories. This holographic correspondence is dual in the sense, that strongly interacting gauge theories are mapped to classical gravity, while quantum gravity to weakly interacting gauge theories (similar to electrodynamics).

The aim of the present proposal is to apply integrable methods to solve exactly the simplest nontrivial four dimensional gauge theory and use the results for a better understanding of quantum gravity and strongly coupled quantum gauge theories. Our exact solutions will also support the holographic conjecture and will confirm that gauge theory and string/gravity theory are two equivalent descriptions of the same phenomena. We plan to achieve these aims within a wide international collaboration.

The main aim of our project was to elaborate a program in order to solve exactly the simplest nontrivial 4 dimensional gauge theory, which is considered to be the hydrogen atom of all gauge theories, including the theories of the strong and electroweak interactions. The feasibility of the project derived from the fact that the gauge theory is holographically dual to a 10 dimensional string theory, which can be described by an integrable two-dimensional quantum field theory. As we had already calculated the 2-point functions of the gauge theory we focused on the determination of the missing fundamental data, namely on the 3-point functions. We managed to map these quantities to finite volume form factors of the integrable model. We then developed and elaborated a method to calculate systematically the finite size corrections of form factors. We tested these methods in various integrable two dimensional quantum field theories and applied the results partly at the weak coupling and strong coupling sides of the duality. We also generalized the analysis for the presence of boundaries and defects, where we determined the asymptotic form of the 1-point functions. Additionally, we obtained significant results in integrable many body systems, in simplified string theories, and solved various other integrable problems. During the project we published 51 journal papers, 4 students acquired their PhD degree, and we organized 3 workshop.
