magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A bagolylepke-szerűek (Noctuoidea) filogenetikus rendszere a molekuláris markerek és a finomabb morfológiai-anatómiai jellegek használata révén jelentősen átalakult. Egyik csoportjuk a molekuláris elemző közlemények egyikében a „pest clade” elnevezést kapta, mivel a legtöbb gazdaságilag jelentős faj ebbe a filogenetikai ágazatba sorolható. A célcsoportként megjelölt Poliina subtribus több szempontból is ideálisnak tűnik. Taxonómiailag fontos jellegeik szünapomorfiáik alapján filogenetikai szempontból jól jellemezhetők, emellett trend-jellegű változások is felismerhetők, amelyek földrajzi grádiensek mentén rendeződnek. Holarktikus elterjedésű csoport, jelentős délkelet-ázsiai fajgazdagsági gócterülettel, míg egyrészt Európát, másrészt Észak-Amerikát csak a nagy zonális áreájú fajok érik el.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

Az alábbi főbb összefüggéseket feltételezzük. (i) A maximális faj-sokféleség területe egybeesik a filogenetikailag bazális csoportok elterjedésével. (ii) Ezek a genitális függelékek bilaterálisan szimmetrikus felépítését mutatják. (iii) Két fő, divergens változási tendencia van: (α) a külső genitális függelékek komplexitása másodlagos aszimmetrikussá válással, kombinálódva a belső struktúrák relatív egyszerűségével; (β) a külső genitális függelékek egyszerűsödése, kombinálódva a belső genitális struktúrák bonyolultabbá válásával; mindkét esetben csereviszony feltételezhető a külső és belső struktúrák komplexitása között. (iv) Ezt a trade off-t a két legfajgazdagabb genus mutatja (Polia vs. Ctenoceratoda), előbbi a holarktikus arboreális zonobiómokban, utóbbi Közép-Ázsia arid hegyvidékein és sivatagi területein. (v) A fajkeletkezés allopatrikus típusú, ebben döntő fontosságú bizonyos barrierek áthágása. Ezért a leginkább leszármaztatott alakok a genusok elterjedésének perifériáin helyezkednek el.
Az előbbiekhez kapcsolódó megvizsgálandó főbb kérdéseki:
 Melyek a Poliina genusokban a pleziomorfnak ill. apomorfnak minősülő jellegek?
 Melyek a külső genitáliák morfológiai változásainak fő filogenetikai trendjei?
 Melyek a vikariáns testvércsoportok a holarktikus fajcsoportokon belül?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A fajképződési folyamatok modern eszközökkel történő vizsgálata segít megérteni a biológiai sokféleség földrajzi megoszlásában tapasztalható szabályszerűségeket.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Úgy gondoljuk ezekre a kérdésekre adott válaszok a biológiai sokféleség megőrzésében is hasznosulhatnak.
angol összefoglaló
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The phylogenetic system of the superfamily Noctuoidea has been significantly changed by the use of molecular markers and finer morphological-anatomical characters. One of its most diverse groups was called as „pest clade” as the most economically significant species belong to this phylogenetic branch. Our target group also belongs to this main clade. Since numerous species of this group were described quite recently, it is timely to provide a detailed phylogenetic and biogeographical analysis, and summarise the results in a monographic work. The close cooperation of the applicant and the senior researcher has been started in 1987. Since then, about half-hundred peer-reviewed communications and 4 monographic books were published on the taxonomy and biogeography of Noctuidae, including the descriptions of 3 new genera and 26 new species of the subfamily Hadeninae. During this activity, and also as a result of our project finished in 2010, a comprehensive taxonomical database and a collection of tens of thousands of digitalised photographs of specimens and microscopic slides were gathered. Our target group, the subtribe Poliina appears to be ideal for this synthetic work. The phylogenetic evaluation of taxonomically important characters (synapomorphies) is fairly clarified and, furthermore, certain major trends and geographical gradients of changes can be outlined. The group is exclusively Holarctic with core area of diversity in Southeastern Asia, while in Europe and North America widely distributed species occur only.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The hypothesised regularities: (i) Core areas of the species diversity overlap with the ranges of the phylogenetically basal groups. (ii) These have the bilaterally symmetrical form of the male genital capsule. (iii) Main divergent trends of change: (α) complexity of external genitalia connected with secondary asymmetrisation combined with less complex structures of internal genitalia; (β) simplification of genital capsule combined with complex structures of internal genitalia: i.e. in both cases the presence of trade off in complexity of external vs. internal genitalia. (iv) The two most diverse and widely distributed genera (Polia vs. Ctenoceratoda) show these trade-offs, the first in the Holarctic arboreal zonobiomes, the latter in the Central Asiatic orobiomes + eremic habitats. (v) The speciation proceeded by allopatric segregation, by crossing certain barriers. Thus, the derived stages of the diverse genera should occur at the peripheries of the distributions.
These hypotheses require answering the following questions:
 Which characters can be qualified as plesiomorphic vs. apomorphic in Poliina?
 Which are the phylogenetic trends of morphological change in external genitalia?
 Which are the monophyletic species groups or pairs within Polia and Ctenoceratoda?
 Which species groups of Polia have a Holarctic or Trans-Palaearctic distribution?
 Which are the vicariant sister species within the Holarctic species groups of Polia?
 Which are the core areas of species diversity of Poliina genera which share the plesiomorphic characters?
Can we discover some connections between character evolution, expansivity and species diversity?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The proposed research includes some innovations both in methodology and in the expected results. The most important novelty is perhaps the combination the already established morphology- and DNA-based taxonomical survey with the application of the scanning electron micrography. We think that we need to study the finer structures of antennae which are responsible for perception of some sexual signals. On the matter of speciation we have the working hypothesis that there must be some parsimony in the changes of external appendages vs. inner genital structures, it means that we expect some trade-off in the changes of external and internal structures. The enhanced complexity of external structures often proceed by the break of the original bilateral symmetry which leads to partitioning of functions and to increase of the species diversity due to the encreasing number of possible combinations. The survey of speciation processes with modern tools leads to better understanding of the regularities in the geographical repartition of species diversity.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The researcher is mostly interested in such question which can result in some generalisations. This basic question is in our case the possible „economy” in changes leading to speciation. We suppose that the growing compexity has not only some evolutionary advantages (e.g. more complex external genitalia), but also some costs which leads to simplifications in other structures (inner genitalia). We also interested in the possible advantages of the emerging secondary asymmetry combined with partitioning of functions. A further question is the co-incidence of the maximum diversity area of a certain group with the core area of its origin, and also the problem of the further geographical differentiation during expansion. We think that the answers on these questions may be useful in biodiversity conservation.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
A sokféleség központi területe egybeesik a fejlődéstörténetileg maradvány-jellegű sino-himalájai csoportok (Haderonia, Tricheurois, egyes Polia alnemek) areájával, ezek a legkorábbi elágazások. A Polia vs Ctenoderatoda nemekben a két változási trend: α) a külső genitáliák komplexitása kombinálódik a funkcionálisan aktív részek aszimmetrikussá válásával, (β) a fogókészülék egyszerűsödése a belső genitáliák bonyolultabbá válásával kombinálódik, vagyis a kettő között csereviszony áll fenn.
The core area of diversity overlaps with the range of the phylogenetically relict-like Sino-Himalyan groups (Haderonia, Tricheurois and some Polia subgenera), forming the basal splits. In Polia vs Ctenoceratoda there are two trends of change: (α) the complexity of external genitalia connected with secondary asymmetry of the functionally active parts (β) the simplification of genital capsula, combined with complexity of the internal genitalia: i.e. there is a trade-off in the complexity of external vs. internal genitalia. The CO1 sequence data have shown that the genus Polia, and subg. Polia are monophyletic. Basic split was shown between the P. nebulosa-group and all other species groups of Polia s.str. The latter consists of three isolated species, the others are subdivided (i) into an isolated steppic species, (ii) into a Holarctic species triplet in which the Nearctic sibling species pair is the sister group of the trans-Palearctic species, and (iii) a boreo-arctic species complex, subdivided (α) into a trans-Palearctic boreo-temperate, mostly East Palearctic group of species, (β) into a boreo-montane Palearctic vs Nearctic species pair, and (γ) into a circum-Arctic Holarctic triplet of species. Multiple evidence supports that Trans-Beringian migrations have occurred at least three times in Polia, at first in the P. nebulosa group , later in the P. bombycina group, and most recently, during the allopatric speciation process of P. vesperugo/P. propodea.
