magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A grafén elismerten vonzó kétdimenziós anyag az alapkutatás számára, és sok alkalmazási lehetőség szempontjából ígéretes. A grafén kiváló tulajdonságainak (könnyű, rugalmas, vezető) hasznosítása az anyagtudomány egyik jelenlegi fő kihívása. Különféle nanorészecskékkel történő funkcionalizálás tovább javíthatja a grafén tulajdonságait.
A tervezett kutatás utat nyithat a különböző, grafénnal bevont fém felületek lokális elektronszerkezetének tervezett kialakítása irányába. A projekt hozzájárul a grafén-fém típusú hibrid nanoszerkezetek alapvető tulajdonságairól szerzett ismeretek bővítéséhez, ami további új lehetőségeket is nyithat az anyagtudomány és a nanotechnológia számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A grafénkutatás egyik jelenlegi fő kihívása a grafén kiváló vezetési tulajdonságainak megőrzése a grafén alapú eszközök készítése során.
A tervezett kutatás segítségével a tapasztalt anomáliákra keressük a válaszokat. A mért állapotsűrűségek hogyan egyeznek elektronszerkezeti számításainkkal?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Alapkutatási érdekességén túl, a kutatás a grafén-fém vegyes fázisú nanoszerkezetek előállítása szempontjából jelentős. A gerjesztő fény kölcsönhatásba kerül a lokálisan megnövekedett elektromos térrel. Így, ha ilyen részecskékre helyezett grafént vizsgálunk Raman spektroszkópiával, a grafénra jellemző spektrális csúcsok intenzitása nagyságrendekkel megnőhet (felületerősített Raman spektroszkópia). Ezek a felületek alkalmasak lehetnek nagyon kis koncentrációjú molekulák detektálására.
Másrészt, lapos, kristályosan rendezett felületű fém nanorészecskékre helyezve a grafént, különböző periodicitású moiré mintázatok kialakulása várható, a kristályos nanorészecske rácsállandója, és a grafén rácsállandója közti eltérés, valamint a két kristály közti elforgatási szög függvényében. A moiré mintázat olyan periodikus potenciált eredményez, amely összeadódik a kristályrács potenciáljával, és amellyel módosítani lehet a grafén elektronszerkezetét [Yankowitz M, et al., Nat. Phys. 8 (2012) 382]. Tudomásunk szerint a tervezett kutatás egyedülálló Magyarországon, a világban viszont számos laboratóriumban (USA, Kína, Egyesült Királyság, Lengyelország, Spanyolország, India, Szingapúr) folytatnak kutatási tevékenységet grafén-fém nanorészecske hibridek területén.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Sokat ígérő fizikai tulajdonságainak kihasználásához elengedhetetlen a környezettel, a hordozó felülettel való kölcsönhatásának részletes vizsgálata. A projekt a nanotechnológia területéhez tartozó egyik korszerű kutatási terület, az innovatív nano-termékek fejlesztése szempontjából is ígéretesnek számító grafén alapú hibrid anyagok vizsgálatát tervezi.
A projekt hozzájárul a nanostrukturált fém-grafén típusú hibrid szerkezetek tulajdonságairól szerzett ismeretek bővítéséhez. A kutatás utat nyithat a grafén-fém felületek lokális elektronszerkezetének tervezett kialakítása irányába, aminek nagy jelentősége lehet az információkódolás és -feldolgozás területén.
angol összefoglaló
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Graphene is recognized as an attractive two-dimensional material for fundamental research and multiple applications. Exploiting the exceptional properties of this highly promising two dimensional carbon material (light, strong, flexible, semi-metal) is currently one of the hot topics in material science. Functionalization of graphene sheets with various nanoparticles can further enhance the properties of graphene. Hybrid materials consisting of nanoparticles distributed on or below graphene could potentially display additional novel properties due to the interaction between nanoparticles and graphene. Many exciting applications can be envisioned for these novel hybrid structures, such as in sensors, photovoltaic cells, nanocomposites, or catalysis.
The objective of this project is to elaborate and characterize graphene-metal hybrid nanostructures. The morphology and physical properties of the elaborated materials will be investigated by complementary techniques like scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and confocal Raman spectroscopy. We will study the graphene-metal interaction by both experimental and theoretical methods. The multiscale modeling method will be applied, which is the combination of rigid lattice calculations and classical molecular dynamics simulations fitted to density functional theory (DFT). This research may open a route towards the realization of graphene covered metallic surfaces with tailored local electronic structure. The project will contribute to enhance the knowledge on the fundamental properties of graphene-metal hybrids, which can open up additional new opportunities for materials science and nanotechnology.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

One of the main challenges in current graphene research is how to preserve the excellent electronic properties of graphene during the fabrication of graphene based devices. The possibility to modulate the density of electronic states at nanoscale is an issue which can be interesting also from applications point of view. In this project the interaction between metal nanoparticles and graphene will be investigated, and how this interaction affects the density of states in graphene. The coupling can be strengthened by annealing the graphene-metal hybrid nanostructures, which decreases the graphene-metal separation.
Preliminary experiments show that when graphene is transferred onto flat, crystalline gold nanostructures, moiré patterns of unusually large period (5-8 nm) can be observed during scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements. These large-period patterns cannot be explained simply by taking into account the misfit between the crystal lattice constants of graphene and gold, and their relative rotation. The planned research seeks to respond the observed anomalies. The hypothesis is that the topmost gold layer is strained, leading to different lattice constant than in the bulk. In turn, this alters the graphene/gold misfit and thus the moiré period. Our goal is to identify and study the patterns which form on nanostructured metal-graphene surfaces and to reproduce them using the multiscale theoretical approach. Further questions to be investigated: How the moiré patterns with different periods affect the local electronic density of states (LDOS) in graphene? How the LDOS measured by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) compares to our band structure calculations?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Beyond its interest in basic research, the significance of the project lies in the realization of graphene-metal mixed phase nanostructures. This hybrid system offers an ideal platform to study and to better understand the strength of nanostructured metal-graphene interaction. Possible applications can depend also on the shape and size of the metal nanoparticles. For example, in hemispherical gold nanoparticles with diameters in the ten nanometres range, local surface plasmons can be excited by illumination at appropriate wavelengths. In the case of closed-packed nanoparticles, the electric field can be drastically enhanced in the space between the nanoparticles, due to the collective electron motion in the nanoparticles. If graphene is transferred onto such plasmonic nanoparticles, its Raman signal can significantly increase (surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy), due to the interaction of light with the enhanced electric fields. These advanced substrates can be suitable to detect very low concentrations of molecules.
On the other hand, transferring graphene onto flat metal nanoparticles with crystalline surfaces, the formation of moiré patterns with different periods is expected. The moiré period depends on the misfit between the lattice constants of the crystalline nanoparticle and graphene, as well as on the rotation angle between the two crystals. Moiré patterns act as periodic potentials for the graphene charge carriers, which add up to the crystal lattice potential and can modify the electronic properties of graphene [M. Yankowitz, et al., Nat. Phys. 8 (2012) 382]. We expect that strained moiré systems can be formed by annealing, which broadens the possibilities for tuning the electronic properties. The research points towards the realization of graphene-metal surfaces with tailored local electronic properties, which can have great significance in the field of information coding and processing. To the best of our knowledge, the planned research is unique in Hungary. However, numerous laboratories worldwide (USA, China, United Kingdom, Poland, Spain, India, Singapore) carry out research activities in the field of graphene-metal nanoparticle hybrids.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The one-atomic thick graphene is one of the most well-known, and likely the most studied material. In the last ten years it has been in the centre of uninterrupted interest in both basic research and electronics industry. Transferring the exceptional properties of graphene (light, strong, flexible, semi-metal) is currently one of the hot topics in material science. In order to fully exploit its physical properties, is necessary to study the interaction of graphene with its environment, especially with the substrate on which is supported. The project offers timely research in the field of nanotechnology and more specifically on the development of graphene based hybrid materials of great potential for innovative nano-products. Hybrid materials consisting of nanoparticles distributed on or below graphene could potentially display additional novel properties due to the interaction between nanoparticles and graphene. Many exciting applications can be envisioned for these hybrid structures, such as in sensors, photovoltaic cells, nanocomposites, or catalysis.
The objective is to cover with graphene metal nanoparticles of different shapes and sizes. Our goal is to find a relationship between the graphene-metal interaction and the physical properties of the hybrid structures. To this end, both experimental and theoretical methods will be employed. The project will contribute to enhance the knowledge on the fundamental properties of graphene-metal hybrids. The proposed research can open a route towards the realization of graphene covered metallic surfaces with tailored electronic properties, which can have potential interest in the field of information coding and processing.

Grafénnal fedett ezüst és arany nanorészecskéket állítottunk elő és karakterizáltunk különböző kísérleti módszerekkel. A grafén fedőrétegben reverzibilis mechanikai feszültséget indukáltunk lézeres besugárzással. Megmutattuk, hogy a nanorészecskék mellett, alacsony dózisú Ar+ ionos besugárzással is hangolható a grafén nanométeres skálájú szerkezeti hullámossága, mivel a ponthibák lokális rácsdeformációkat okoznak a hiba közvetlen környezetében. Grafénnal fedett ezüst és arany nanorészecskék gőzérzékelési tulajdonságait vizsgáltuk reflexiós spektroszkópiával. A szerves gőzmolekuláknak kitett nanorészecskék optikai spektrumában megfigyelt változásokat kapilláris kondenzációval írtuk le.
Graphene-covered silver and gold nanoparticles were prepared and characterized by different experimental methods. Hydrostatic strain was induced dynamically in the graphene overlayer by laser irradiation. We observed charge transfer from silver and consequently n-type electrostatic doping of graphene. We demonstrated that graphene-encapsulated silver nanoparticles are protected against spontaneous sulfurization for more than one year. We showed that, in addition to nanoparticles, the nanoscale rippling of graphene could be tuned also by low-fluence Ar+ ion irradiation since point defects induce local deformations in the lattice near the defect. We measured the optical reflectance response of graphene-covered silver and gold nanoparticles in the presence of different organic vapours. The changes observed in the optical response curves of the nanoparticles were well described by capillary condensation. We demonstrated that the presence of a graphene overlayer affects both the sensitivity and selectivity. We studied moiré superstructures formed in graphene/graphite and MoTe2/graphene systems. We developed a combined graphical-numerical method to evaluate the deformations (local strain) that resulted the anisotropic moiré superstructure observed on graphene-covered graphite substrate. The complex moiré patterns measured in MoTe2/graphene system were successfully reproduced by density functional theory calculation and simulation of scanning tunneling microscopy images.
