magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A projekt keretében törési jelenségek kutatásának két kiemelkedően fontos problémájával, a katasztrofális törés előrejelzésével és a repedési mintázatok kontrolljával foglalkozunk a statisztikus fizika megközelítési módszereire építve.

Kutatómunkánk Magyarországon egyedülálló, azonban a tágabb szakterületen több magyar kutatócsoport tevékenykedik: Börzsönyi Tamás (Wigner FK), Groma István (ELTE). Csak néhányat említve: Stefano Zapperi (CNR, Milan), Mikko Alava (Aalto University, Helsinki), Stephane Santucci, Loic Vanel, Osvani Ramos (University of Lyon), Alex Hansen (University of Trondheim), Knut Jorgen Maloy (University of Oslo), Michael Zaiser (University of Erlangen).

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A törési jelenségek fizikájának nagyon fontos kihívása a repedési mintázatok kontrollált módon történő létrehozása, ami újszerű alkalmazások széles spektrumát teszi lehetővé a nano-megmunkálástól a palagáz kitermeléséig.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Fracture processes of solids are strongly affected by the disorder of materials, present at the micro- and meso-scales, hence, comprehensive understanding of fracture phenomena can only be achieved by the application of statistical physics. In the project we investigate two problems of outstanding importance of the research field, i.e. the possibilities of forecasting impending catastrophic failures and the controlled generation of crack patterns. Our research is mainly of theoretical nature executed in close collaboration with experimental research groups.

Based on laboratory studies, we work out realistic discrete element models of porous materials and investigate the process of compressive failure. Analyzing the time evolution and statistics of crackling noise generated by the gradual fracturing our goal is to identify early signatures of macroscopic failure which could be exploited to forecast the impending catastrophe. The realistic simulations will be complemented by fiber bundle studies and finite size scaling analysis to clarify how to upscale the results to the size of real structures and natural phenomena.

According to the experiments of our collaborator, in thin layers of pastes on a substrate desiccation induces a complex crack pattern which can be controlled with an external magnetic field. We perform realistic computer modelling to reveal the available patterns and the possibilities to rewrite and to erase them. Analytical and numerical calculations are planned to clarify the structural transitions of crack networks generated by a slowly penetrating intruder in solids as a simple model of fracking technologies used to extract shale gas.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The fracture of heterogeneous materials is accompanied by crackling noise which addresses the possibility of forecasting. Our hypothesis is that based on the joint investigation of the microscopic dynamics of the fracture process and the statistical and dynamical features of crackling noise early signatures of failure can be identified which can be exploited to forecast the impending catastrophe. Such joint investigation of micro- and macro-scale phenomena of high complexity requires the development of realistic discrete element models of fracture. In collaboration with our experimental partners we want to understand how record breaking bursts of the crackling time series emerge, how records affect the structure and evolution of the time series, whether the acceleration of record breaking can serve as a signature of the final acceleration towards failure, and how the loading conditions affect the appearance of precursors? It is a very important question how the theoretical results can be scaled up to the size of real structures and natural phenomena?

The controlled generation of crack patterns allows for a broad spectrum of novel industrial applications. We hypothesize that the magnetic controll of desiccation induced crack patterns in thin layers of pastes may have a higher efficiency and flexibility beyond our current understanding. Based on computer simulations we want to clarify how the parameters of the system determine the available crack patterns and how the effect of the initial magnetic field can be overwritten or erased. We want to reveal how the structure of the crack network generated in solids by an intruder can be controlled by the speed of penetration.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Our research is focused on two problems of fracture physics of ultimate importance, i.e. the forecasting of catastrophic failures and the controlled generation of crack patterns based on the approaches of statistical physics. We develop realistic computational models of a high complexity which provide a detailed representation of the microstructure of materials making also possible to investigate a broad spectrum of phenomena beyond the main goals of the project. The application of statistical physics allows us to extend the analogy of fracture phenomena with phase transitions and critical phenomena, as well.

We perform basic research, however, the results can form the basis of various technological applications having also a great societal impact. The catastrophic collapse of engineering constructions is caused by fracture processes, and the nucleation and propagation of cracks are often responsible for natural catastrophes, as well. Recently, it has become a common practice to equip expensive constructions with sensors to record the acoustic noise of cracking. Steep slopes endangered by landslides and unstable rock walls in mountains are also often under acoustic surveillance; on higher length scales the seismological signals of earthquakes play the same roll. Our research may have a considerable contribution to achieve more accurate assessment of the damage state of constructions, based on the recorded crackling signals, and to forecast catastrophic failures to avoid human loss. The controlled generation of desired crack patterns has broad range of applications from nano-manufacturing, through microelectronics, to fracking technologies.

Our research is quite unique in Hungary, however, in the broader research field there are a few Hungarian research groups: Tamás Börzsönyi (Wigner FK) and István Groma (ELTE). Abroad several research groups can be mentioned including also our collaborators. Just to name a few: Stefano Zapperi (CNR, Milan), Mikko Alava (Aalto University, Helsinki), Stephane Santucci, Loic Vanel, Osvanny Ramos (University of Lyon), Alex Hansen (University of Trondheim), Knut Jorgen Maloy (University of Oslo), Michael Zaiser (University of Erlangen).

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Fracture phenomena of materials have been investigated since ancient times, due to their high practical relevance. In spite of these efforts, the nucleation and propagation of cracks can still give rise to the catastrophic collapse of engineering construction (e.g. bridges and water dams), and several natural catastrophes such as snow- and stone avalanches, landslides and earthquakes are caused by fracture processes. In our project we investigate the possibilities of forecasting catastrophic failure events and the controlled generation of crack patterns, which both have a high potential of industrial applications and a great societal impact.

Fracture of materials rarely occurs suddenly. The natural and most of the artificial materials of engineering practice have a disordered microstructure so that under mechanical loads they undergo gradual cracking which generates acoustic noise. Collaborating with experimental partners we work out realistic models of fracture and analyze the time evolution of crackling noise towards failure. Based on approaches of statistical physics we want to identify early signatures of failure which could make possible to forecast the impending catastrophe.

The controlled generation of desired crack patterns is a great challenge of current fracture physics, with a broad spectrum of potential applications from nano-fabrication to shale gas recovery. Collaborating with an experimental group we investigate the control of desiccation induced crack patterns in thin layers of pastes with an external magnetic field. We also study the structure of crack networks generated in solids by a slowly penetrating intruder, as a simple model of fracking.

A repedési zaj idősorának rekordméretű eseményeit vizsgálva megmutattuk, hogy a leghosszabb életidejű rekord nagy pontossággal jelzi törési folyamatok gyorsuló szakaszának kezdetét. Módszert javasoltunk a közelgő katasztrofális törés korai előjelének azonosítására. Megmutattuk, hogy a rendszer elemei közötti terhelés újraosztódást szabályozó kapcsolati hálózatot fokozatosan véletlenszerűvé téve átmenet jön létre a tönkremeneteli jelenségek lokális és átlagtér univerzalitási osztályai között. Zsugorodó vékonyrétegek repedezési folyamatának szimulációs vizsgálatával megmutattuk, hogy anizotrópia jelenlétében a repedezésnek három fázisa van: irányított, párhuzamos repedezés, szegmentáció, és bináris fragmentáció. A fragmensek alakja anizotrópnak bizonyult, ugyanakkor tömegeloszlásuk robusztus, log-normális függvényalakkal írható le. Kiterjesztettük szilárdtestek széttörési jelenségeinek fázisdiagramját és feltártuk a kopási, repedezési, és fragmentációs fázisok skálatörvényeit. A mozaikok elméletére építve bevezettük a repedési mintázatok egy általános osztályozását, és megmutattuk, hogy a keletkező fragmenseket robusztus négyzet, illetve kocka alak jellemzi.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
We have explored how the degree and spatial distribution of disorder in heterogeneous materials affect their micro- and macroscopic fracture properties. We have identified relationships that help to scale up laboratory results to geological scales and can be exploited to design novel materials. Investigating the record size events of crackling noise, we showed that the longest lifetime record indicates with high accuracy the onset of acceleration of fracture processes. We proposed a method to identify an early signature of the impending catastrophic failure. We showed that by gradually randomizing the network of load transmitting connections among the elements of a system, a transition occurs between the localized and mean field universality classes of failure phenomena. Investigating the shrinkage induced cracking of thin layers, we showed that in the presence of anisotropy, cracking has three phases: directed aligned cracking, segmentation, and binary fragmentation. The shape of the fragments was found to be anisotropic, while their mass distribution proved to be robust with a log-normal functional form. We have extended the phase diagram of the breakup phenomena of solid bodies and determined the scaling laws of the abrasion, cleavage, and fragmentation phases. Based on the theory of mosaics, we introduced a general classification of fracture patterns and showed that the resulting fragments are characterized by robust square or cubic shapes.
