magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás jelentősége ezen tulajdonságok vizsgálatában rejlik.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Forecasting the state of any system determined by time-dependent processes is based on the numerical solution of a mathematical model. These models usually consist of complicated nonlinear partial differential equations or a system of those. The numerical methods applied for their numerical treatment can lead to satisfactory result only if they are convergent and stable.

The main aim of this project is to investigate the convergence and the stability of innovative time integrators (operator splitting procedures, exponential integrators, Magnus integrators) when applied to infinite dimensional linear regulator problems and certain nonlinear dispersive problems (nonlinear Schrödinger, Korteweg-de Vries, shallow water equation).

In order to achieve the above objectives, we apply these methods to an abstract nonlinear Cauchy problem on a Banach space, and investigate their convergence and stability with functional analytical tools, more precisely, with the help of the linear and nonlinear operator semigroup theory. The significance of the research lies in the abstract solution of differential equations, that is, in the comprehensive approach for all types, i.e., ordinary, parabolic, and hyperbolic partial differential equations. Since the solution of all of these problems leads to an operator semigroup, the error analysis of the numerical methods can be achieved without the explicit knowledge of the exact solution, which enables us to investigate the convergence of the innovative integrators within the same framework.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The main question of the research is the applicability of innovative integrators to abstract regulator problems and to certain dispersive equations. The research aims at finding an answer to the question whether these methods possess the basic properties (i.e., convergence and stability) which make them suitable for the numerical forecasting of time-dependent processes. To this end we rewrite the model as an abstract nonlinear Cauchy problem, and apply the innovative integrators (operator splitting procedures, exponential integrators, Magnus integrators) to them. The question to be answered is then formulated as follows: We seek those criteria on the operator appearing in the abstract Cauchy problem, on the time step of the integrator, and on the initial function, under which the numerical solution computed by the innovative integrator tends to the exact solution of the problem, determined by the (non)linear semigroup generated by the abstract operator, when the time step goes to zero.

It is easier to answer the question above if the operator appearing in abstract Cauchy problem has some given properties. Therefore, we apply the innovative integrators to abstract regulator problems and dispersive equations. With the help of numerical experiments we aim at studying the efficiency of innovative integrators and whether they are applicable in practice.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Forecasting of every system determined by time-dependent processes requires even more accurate and faster numerical treatment (let us think of the weather forecast, where the computation of the forecast should not miss the events occure in reality). These requirements stimulate the researches to elaborate on new numerical methods. The present project aims the analysis of three new efficient numerical methods. These methods can only give a satisfactory result if they possess certain mathematical properties. The significance of the research lies in the analysis of these properties. If it is found that the innovative integrators possess these properties when applied to complicated nonlinear models, then it will be worth solving practical tasks (e.g. weather forecast, flood prevention, modelling air pollution transport) by applying these new methods instead of the conventional ones.

One of our main examples will be the optimal control of linearised shallow water equations, which could be a key problem in flood prevention. The solution computed by an innovative integrator gives how the water's height evolves in time under a given control function, that is, when the positions and capacities of the channels along the riverside are given. If we consider the whole nonlinear model, we obtain more realistic results, therefore, the study of innovative integrators is extremely important for nonlinear problems.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Processes of the natural world are described by physical, chemical, biological models, but many financial, economical, and social scientific models are drawn up by the language of mathematics, too. Since the processes taking place in the nature are quite complicated, it is as well the their mathematical description, i.e., the model. Therefore, the form of its exact solution is usually unknown. In order to explore its properties or to compute its approximation, further mathematical methods are needed.

Térbeli diszkretizációkkal együtt alkalmazva a szeletelés elsőrendű. Késleltetést tartalmazó egyenletek esetén is beláttuk az operátorszeletelés elsőrendű konvergenciáját. Megmutattuk továbbá, hogy a kvázilineáris késleltetett egyenletekre alkalmazott Magnus-integrátor másodrendben konvergens és megtartja a pozitivitást. Példaként a lappangási időt tartalmazó járványterjedési modelleket vizsgáltuk. Eredményeinket minden esetben numerikus kísérletekkel illusztráltuk.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
The forecast of the future state of time-dependent systems is based on the numerical solution of mathematical models (differential equations). The numerical methods give satisfactory results only if they are convergent and their result reflects the qualitative properties of the exact solution. The main objective of the present project was to study innovative integrators (operator splitting procedures, exponential integrators, Magnus integrators) in view of these aspects for a class of problems or for a specific equation from application side. In the case of shallow water equations, we showed that the linearised problem, required when applying exponential integrator, is well-posed. This result was achieved in the framework of functional analysis, more precisely, by using operator semigroup theory. We have also shown that the operator splitting and exponential integrator applied to the quadratic regulator problem for the linearised equation result in a convergent method. Moreover, splitting is of first order when used together with spatial discretisations. Applying operator semigroup theory, we proved the first-order convergence of operator splitting for delay equations, too. We also showed that the Magnus integrator for quasi-linear delay equations is second-order convergent and preserves positivity. As an example, epidemic propagation models with latent period were investigated. All our results were illustrated by numerical experiments.
