Számos újonnan felfedezett, érdekes jelenséget ismerünk biológiai rendszerekben és kondenzált anyagokban, amelyeket távolba ható elektronátmenet magyaráz. Ezek leírása pontos és megbízható kvantumkémiai módszereket igényel, olyanokat, amelyekkel ésszerű költségek mellett nagy rendszerek is kezelhetők. Az ún. fragmens módszerek megfelelőnek tűnnek az ilyen rendszerek leírására, hiszen több „aktív” fragmens is definiálható, és ezek pontos leírásával, valamint a közöttük lévő csatolás meghatározásával a teljes rendszer tulajdonságai számíthatók nagy pontossággal. E projektben egy ilyen módszer kidolgozását tűztük ki célul, különös tekintettel molekulák gerjesztett állapotaira. Ebben a) magas szintű elektronszerkezet módszereket alkalmazunk; b) kiszámítjuk a fragmensek közötti pontos kölcsönhatási energiát; c) figyelembe vesszük a fragmenseken lokalizált gerjesztett állapotok közötti exciton csatolást.
There are several newly discovered, interesting phenomena which are explained by electron transfer to distant regions in biological systems and materials. The explanation requires accurate and reliable quantum chemical methods which can also treat large systems with reasonable costs. Fragment methods could be the preferred approach, where several “active” centers can be handled at a high level of theory and the property of the entire system is calculated from that of the individual fragments, considering proper coupling terms between them. In this project we aimed to develop such methodology, in particular for excited states of the molecules. We have developed methods which a) use high level electronic structure theory; b) calculate accurate interaction energy between the fragments; c) includes the excitonic coupling between excited states localized on the fragments. Beside the excitonic coupling, Charge Transfer (CT) states and electron transfer may also play important role in the above-mentioned phenomena. Therefore, on the one hand (although we were not yet able to include CT states in the new model), we have carefully benchmarked the electronic structure methods for CT states and for their potential energy surfaces which gave us important information on the reliability of methods, and on the nature of the valence-CT coupling. On the other hand, we developed a chemistry-oriented model of electron transfer, which later could be used also with fragment methods.
