magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Ezen projekt célja a fenti eredmények kiterjesztése a következő irányokban:
- további kvantum protokollok;
- protokollok, melyek kettőnél több versengő mennyiséggel írhatók le (pl. kvantum állapot újraosztás);
- nem független azonos eloszlású, illetve különböző végtelen-dimenziós modellek fizikai motivációval;

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A projekt központi témája a kvantum divergenciák, leginkább Rényi divergenciák, tanulmányozása különböző kvantum-információelméleti problémák "trade-off" relációinak leírásában. Célunk meghatározni a lehetséges kódolási stratégiák elvileg elérhető legjobb teljesítményét olyan alapproblémákban mint a forráskódolás, csatornakódolás, és hipotézisvizsgálat. E célból explicit kifejezéseket keresünk a különböző problémákat meghatározó, egymással versengő mennyiségek közötti "trade-off" leírására, és ezen kifejezéseket összekapcsoljuk kvantum állapotokra vonatkozó mértékeivel az információnak, korrelációnak, és kvantum állapotok különbözőségének. Ezek az összefüggések egyrészt az adott problémák mélyebb elvi megértését nyújtják, másrészt segítenek kiválasztani a gyakorlati szempontból lényeges definícióit olyan alapmennyiségeknek, mint például a Rényi feltételes entrópia, kölcsönös információ, vagy a feltételes kölcsönös információ. Ezeket a problémákat különböző, a kvantum világra jellemző kereteken belül fogjuk tanulmányozni; egyebek közt vizsgálunk majd protokollokat a statisztikus fizikából származó korrelált kvantum rendszerekben, és megvizsgáljuk, hogy milyen szerepet játsznak különböző típusú kvantum korrelációk, mint pl. az összefonódottság vagy a nemlokalitás, ezekben a protokollokban. Ezen kérdések jelenleg a kvantum-információelméleti kutatások előterében vannak, és a kvantum Rényi divergenciák szerepe a "trade-off" relációk leírásában központi szerepet játszott az utóbbi évek kvantum Shannon-elméleti kutatásaiban.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatási projektben a célunk meghatározni különböző kvantum protokollok aszimptotikusan elérhető legjobb teljesítményét. Ehhez meghatározzuk az ezen problémákat leíró mennyiségek közötti ún. "trade-off" relációkat, és ezeket összekapcsoljuk különböző nem-kommutatív Rényi divergenciákból származó információs mennyiségekkel. Ezek a kérdések az utóbbi évek kvantum Shannon-elméleti kutatásainak előterében voltak, melyekhez a tervezett projekt vezetője jelentős mértékben hozzájárult; egyebek közt kvantum Rényi divergenciák nemrég felfedezett új családja operációs értelmezésének megadásával, mint a kvantum hipotézisvizsgálat, illetve a klasszikus-kvantum csatornakódolás pontos konverz hibaexponense. A projektvezetőt ilyen irányú korábbi kutatásai különösen alkalmassá teszik a témában létrehozott kutatócsoport vezetésére.

Megjegyezzük, hogy bár a kvantum-információelmélet nemzetközileg kiemelt kutatási terület, Magyarországon nincs kimondottan a kvantum-információelmélet matematikai problémáival foglalkozó kutatócsoport. Célunk lefektetni egy nemzetközileg versenyképes kvantum-információelméleti iskola alapjait azzal, hogy a projekten belül összefogunk fiatal és tehetséges magyar kutatókat, akik a kvantum-információelmélet és a matematikai fizikai világszinvonalú kutatóinézeteiben szereztek kutatási tapasztalatot, amit ezen célkitűzés szolgálatába tudnak állítani.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

It is well-known in classical information theory that for many communication protocols, the trade-off between the competing operational quantities describing the protocol (e.g., the coding rate and the error exponent in the asymptotic analysis of channel coding) can be given in a quantitative form, expressed in terms of Rényi divergences. There has been much progress recently in extending such results to quantum protocols. In particular, the discovery of a new type of non-commutative Rényi divergences made it possible to derive strong converse results for a number of protocols, and to even obtain exact strong converse exponents for binary state discrimination and classical-quantum channel coding. In this project we are aiming at extending these results in various directions, by considering
- other important protocols;
- protocols characterized by more than two competing operational quantities (e.g., state redistribution);
- non-i.i.d. settings and various infinite-dimensional extensions originating from important models in physics;
- locality-constrained protocols and the connection of the error exponents with entanglement quantification.
In particular, we are aiming at obtaining exact error exponents for quantum source compression, classical-quantum channel coding (with or without composition constraint, and considering both product and entangled encodings), state redistribution and related protocols, tripartite entanglement distillation, and extensions of these and other protocols from the non-i.i.d. setting to correlated lattice models, and from the finite-dimensional to the most general von Neumann algebra setting.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The central theme of the project is the study of quantum divergences, in particular, Rényi divergences, in
the quantification of the trade-off relations in various quantum information theoretic problems. We aim at
identifying the ultimate theoretical limits of the performance of coding strategies in such core problems as
source compression, channel coding, and state discrimination, by finding explicit descriptions of the exact
trade-off curves between the competing quantities characterizing each problem, and linking them to measures of information, correlation, and dissimilarity of quantum states. Apart from their obvious theoretical
importance of obtaining a more detailed understanding of these protocols, such exact trade-off quantifications
would help to select the operationally relevant versions from among the many possible formal definitions of
such fundamental quantities as the Rényi conditional entropy, mutual information, conditional mutual information, and others. We will study these problems in a wide range of settings special to the quantum world; in particular, we will study protocols in correlated quantum systems relevant for quantum statistical physics, and explore the impact of locality constraints and the role of non-locality, entanglement, and other types of quantum correlations in these protocols. These questions are at the forefront of current research in quantum information theory; in particular, the study of quantum Rényi divergences, and their connection to trade-off relations have been the central topics of quantum Shannon theory in the past few years.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Quantum information theory is one of the most dynamically developing research fields of our days, and it is the source of many intriguing problems in mathematics and other disciplines. The expectations regarding its technological applications are clearly shown by various national governments setting it as a priority research area in their research funding schemes, or by the launching of large-scale projects like the planned European flagship project in quantum technologies.

In the proposed project our aim is to quantify the asymptotically optimal performance of various quantum protocols by expressing the trade-off relations among the operational quantities characterizing these problems, and connecting them to measures of information derived from different types of non-commutative Rényi divergences. These kind of problems have been in the forefront of research in quantum Shannon theory in the past few years, following the discovery of a new type of quantum Rényi divergences (the so-called sandwiched Rényi divergences) and their applications to strong converse problems. The PI of this proposal has contributed significantly to this research direction, among others, by clarifying the operational significance of the sandwiched Rényi divergences as exact strong converse exponents in binary state discrimination and in classical-quantum channel coding. His experience in this field of research, as well as his extensive research connections with other prominent scholars in the field make him particularly well suited to lead a group in this very current direction of research.

We note that despite of the internationally recognized significance of quantum information science,
there is currently no research group in Hungary dedicated to the study of the mathematical aspects of quantum information theory. One of our aims is to set the seeds of an internationally competitive quantum information theory school by uniting within this project young and talented Hungarian researchers in quantum information theory and mathematical physics, who have gained extensive research experience in world leading research centers, and can use their experience and international research network for the success of this initiative.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The scientific worldview was revolutionarized at the beginning of the 20 century by the recognition that physical systems of microscopic size cannot be described by the laws of physics suitable for the everyday world. The predictions of the new physical theory, quantum mechanics, lead to such technological inventions as the laser or semi-conductors, without which modern computers would not be possible. It has been a more and more widespread view in recent years that the predictions of quantum mechanics may lead to a new technological revolution, as the result of which new methods of the storage, transmission, and manipulation of information of unprecedented efficiency may become possible, leading to such technological applications as unconditionally secure cryptography or quantum computers that would outperform any computers of current technology. However, to realize this vision, there are still numerous highly non-trivial problems to solve both on the technology side and in the deeper theoretical understanding of the possibilities offered and the limitations posed by quantum theory. In this project we address mathematical problems originating from quantum information theory, and we aim at answering questions like the optimal compressibility of the information stored in quantum systems, or the theoretical limits of the efficiency of the information transmission via communication channels described by quantum mechanics.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
Számos új eredményt értünk el a kvantum-információelmélet területén, többek közt: - Gauge-invariáns fermionikus állapotokat használva megmutattuk, hogy a független azonos eloszlású esettől eltérően a korrelált állapotok megkülönböztetésében elérhető a minta méretében szuper-exponenciális csökkenése a hibavalószínűségeknek. - Megmutattuk, hogy a klasszikus esettel szemben a kompozit kvantum állapotmegkülönböztetés direkt exponenseire általában szigorú felső korlátot ad a két hipotézist leíró halmazokba eső állapotok legrosszabb páronkénti hibaexponense. Új mértékeit konstruáltuk a többkomponensű összefonódottságnak. - Az algebrai bonyolultságelméletből származó eszközökkel meghatároztuk többkomponensű összefonódott állapotok egymásba képezhetőségének optimális rátáját, illetve a hibaexponens és a ráta közöti összefüggést munkával segített Gibbs-állapot őrző leképezésekre a kvantum termodinamikában.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
We have obtained new results in quantum information theory, in particular: - We have used gauge-invariant fermionic states to show that, unlike in the i.i.d. case, a super-exponential decrease of error probabilities in the sample size is attainable for the discrimination of correlated quantum states. - We have shown that in the case of binary composite quantum state discrimination, the optimal error exponents are generally strictly bounded from above by the optimal pairwise exponents of discriminating single elements of the sets describing the two hypotheses, in contrast with the classical case. - We have determined the strong converse exponent of the asymptotic discrimination of two infinite-dimensional quantum states, and, more generally, of two states of nuclear C*-algebras. - We have constructed new distinguishability measures of quantum states (relative entropies and Rényi divergences) with good mathematical properties, like monotonicity under data processing and additivity. We have also constructed new measures to quantify multi-partite entanglement. - We have applied techniques from algebraic complexity theory to finding optimal rates of multi-party entanglement conversion, and to giving the trade-off between the error exponent and the rate for work-assisted Gibbs-preserving operations in quantum thermodynamics.
