Kutatásunk során feltártuk a magyar és külföldi geográfusoknak a trianoni békeszerződés előkészítésében játszott szerepét, és az új határnak a regionális, települési és gazdasági folyamatokra gyakorolt hatását. Megállapítottuk, hogy a magyar földrajz statisztikai anyagokkal, szuggesztív térképekkel alátámasztott komplex érvrendszert dolgozott ki Magyarország egységének igazolására, amely nem tagadta Magyarország nyelvi tagoltságát, ugyanakkor hangsúlyozta az itt élő népek gazdasági egymásra utaltságát; a természetföldrajzi érvek mellett gazdaságföldrajzi, településföldrajzi érvek sorát is felvonultatta Magyarország határainak védelmében. A magyar geográfusok igyekeztek külföldi kollégáik pártfogását is megnyerni, de a nemzetközi kapcsolati háló mozgósítása eredménytelen maradt. Megállapítható például, hogy a brit földrajzosok a háború alatti Magyarország-képe elmarasztaló volt, és a magyar területi integritás megőrzésének nem maradt támogatója a brit geográfusok között sem a béketárgyalások idején. Az osztrák és német geográfusok érvelését vizsgálva elmondható, hogy a magyarokhoz hasonló elméleti megközelítéssel és kartográfiai módszerekkel igyekeztek a nyugati határváltozást legitimálni, a cseh geográfusok a dunai határra vonatkozó igényüket támasztották alá komplex földrajzi érvrendszerrel. Megállapítottuk továbbá, hogy a határmegvonás hosszú távon befolyásolta az érintett régiók gazdasági, népesedési és településfejlődési folyamatait a nyugati és keleti határtérségben.

Our research shed light on the role of geographers who participated at the peace preparation at the end of the WWI. We also explored the impact of the new borders on the regional, urban, and economic connections. We showed that Hungarian geography developed a complex argument underpinned with statistical analyses and maps to argue for the unity of Greater Hungary. This argument did not deny that Hungary is divided linguistically but emphasised that these nationalities depended on each other in economic production, and physical, urban, and economic geographical considerations were mobilised to defend the borders. Hungarian geographers tried to convince their foreign colleagues to help justify the Hungarian cause, but this mobilisation was not successful. Exploring the British geographers’ view on Greater Hungary, we showed that their opinion was not supportive during the war, and none of them argued for the integrity of the country in the time of the peace talks. Examining the Austrian and German geographers’ scholarly argument, we showed that they used approaches and cartographical methods similar to the Hungarian ones to legitimise the new Austrian-Hungarian border, and the Czech geographers underpinned their claim for the Danube border with complex geographical considerations. We also demonstrated that the newly created boundaries have had a long-term impact on the economic, population, and urban processes of the Western and Eastern border regions.
