magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A paleokörnyezeti kutatások esetében a végső cél rendszerint a lerakó közeg fizikai és kémiai paramétereinek (redox viszonyok, pH, hőmérséklet, sótartalom, mélység stb.)

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A projekt társadalmi hatása kettős.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

We have developed an approach to study microbial processes in various types of sediments and use these microbial proxies to reconstruct the environmental parameters during deposition and describe the environmental changes governed and marked by microbiota during and after deposition and diagenesis. This so-called multilevel hierarchical methodology (including microstructural, petrological, in situ mineralogical and organic matter composition and distribution, and geochemical studies) has succesfully been applied to study microbial processes (and the changes of plaeoenvironmental conditions) in a various set of samples (Mn ores, black shales, weathered carbonate samples, ore formation in an ofiolite sequence etc.).
The aim of the recent project is to test this methodology via extension of the sample types to Quaternary sediments (e.g. lake deposits, loess sequences), sequences connected to the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, sediments with microbial ore formation and element enrichment processes) and to corroborate and refine the former and new results with detailed biological marker studies.
Our plan is 1) to re-interpret our considerable sample set from the point of biological markers and 2) to apply multilevel hierarchical methodology on a set of new sample types, listed above. The expected result will be the refinement of the methodology by biological markers and the identification of microbial assemblages. These data will be used as tools to reconstruct paleoenvironmental and paleoclimate changes.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

In the case of paleoenvironmental reconstruction studies the final aim is generally to gain knowledge on the physico-chemical parameters (redox conditions, pH, temperature, salinity, depth) of the depositional environment and the sediment (autochtonous/allochtonous, organic geochemical facies etc.). With the help of microbial proxies we will be able to follow the transformation (degradation of organic matter, generation of ore and authigenic minerals, element enrichments) of a given sequence. Together with the molecular organic geochemical measurements we will have a multiproxy record for various types of sediments. The interpretation of these data will result in a very well corroborated reconstruction of the paleoenvironmental and microbial changes and will elucidate the role of bacteria in the ore formation processes. We will be able to refine our multilevel hierarchical methodology, to fit the best approach to a given sedimentary record.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

New perspectives:
1) New paleoenvironmental and paleoclimate data and interpretation will be acquired from samples of various ages (Jurassic, Quaternary etc.) and depositional environments.
2) The efficient multilevel hierarchical method will be corroborated and refined with the application of molecular organic geochemical proxies (biological markers).
The project have to be considered unique, as molecular organic geochemical proxies (biological markers) have not been applied for paleoenvironmental or paleoclimate studies on Hungarian sedimentary sequences, only from the petroleum industrial approach. The not really widespread joint application of biomarkers with microstructural, mineralogical and geochemical parameters can be expected to result in novel and detailed scientific interpretations.

The project may have a double social expedience. On the one hand, any research concerning the climatic changes of the last decades or hundreds of years contributes to the better understanding of the climatic changes in progress, and a part of our project deals with Quaternary samples up to recent. On the other hand, the study of ore formation processes with the help of microbial proxies may contribute to the better understanding or discovery of new mineral ore deposits (more likely outside Hungary).

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

During the more and more detailed research performed on microbial ore formation during the last three decades, our research group developed a so-called multilevel hierarchical methodology, which was proven to be uniquely effective to study the geological traces of microbial communities and their role in ore formation, and to use microbial signs (proxies) to reconstruct the phyisical and chemical parameters (water depth, temperature, salinity, oxygen concentration, acidity etc.) of the deposition environment.
In the frames of the recent project we plan 1) to complete the methodology with the application of organic molecular measurements (biological markers, the remnants of the living organisms) to corroborate, refine and extend the knowledge on the depositional and microbial history of the formerly studied sequences, and 2) to extend our investigation to young sedimentary sequences to get information on the climate changes of the near past.

A brazíliai Urucum telep oxidos mangán- és vasérce szintén mikrobiális működés hatására keletkezett, azonban a diagenezis során itt a körülmények oxidos-szuboxidos tartományban maradtak. A bükkszentkereszti ércindikáció vizsgálata hasonló eredményre vezetett. Ezek a telepek ásványosodott biomat (laminált mikrobiális) rendszerek, és képződésük a magyarországi úrkúti mangánérc telep esetében kidolgozott kétlépcsős mikrobiális keletkezési modellel írható le.
Investigation of sedimentary manganese and iron ores and also other ore indications and sediments of variable geological ages were carried on by high resolution optical rock microscopy, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy to characterize the micro-texture, mineral and organic matter types and distributions. Based on data, the Chinese black shale-hosted manganese carbonate ore deposits (Neoproterozoic, Permian and Carboniferous) formed by microbial mediation, and later via diagenesis, the complex mineralization of cell organic matter and extracellular polimeric substance occurred. This is also the case in iron oxide ores of Urucum. The Bükkszentkereszt ore indication also concluded similar results. These deposits are mineralized biomat systems, and their formation can be described by the two step microbially mediated formation model evaluated in Úrkút manganese deposit, Hungary. The trace element content of the deposits is determined by microbial processes. Further important scientific innovation is the determination of role of cell and extracellular polymeric substance in the element reservoir of ore forming systems, and the important contribution to the mass of ore deposits in the sence of quality (numerous mineral facies) and quantity (giant mineral mass) contribution. This asks for attention that not only the primary microbially mediated mineralization, but also diagenetic processes represent considerable contribution to ore deposits.
