magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kutatás során kémiailag módosított alacsonydimenziós anyagok elektronszerkezetében végbemenő változásokat tervezünk vizsgálni. Külföldi együttműködő partnereink egyéb mérési technikákkal tudják kiegészíteni a munkánkat. A különböző vizsgálati módszerek eredményeit kombinálva többet megtudhatunk a módosított anyagok elektronszerkezetéről és viselkedéséről.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A projekt célja a kémiailag módosított alacsonydimenziós anyagok vizsgálata. Közeliterű infravörös mikroszkópiával tervezzük vizsgálni a nanocsőbe töltött molekulákat. A töltött nanocsövekben végbemenő kémiai reakciókat spektroszkópiai módszerekkel követjük. A projekt alapkutatás jellege miatt a munka során a felsoroltakon kívüli érdekes kérdések is felmerülhetnek. A célunk a minták szisztematikus vizsgálatával és a mérési módszerek kombinációjával a tudományterület ismeretanyagát gyarapítani.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Számunkra minden esetben a módosítás elektronszerkezetre gyakorolt hatása érdekes. A tudás, amit a módosított anyagok vizsgálatából szerezhetünk, elősegítheti ezen anyagok tulajdonságainak tervezett módosítását, mint páldául tiltott sáv létrehozása, vagy a kontakt ellenállás csökkentése.
Ezen a területen számos kiváló kutatócsoport dolgozik szerte a világban. A mi előnyünk a vizsgálati módszerek megfelelő kombinációja és a projekt résztvevőinek a nanoanyagok kémiájáról és fizikájáról szerzett sokéves tapasztalata.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A mi kutatásunk különleges anyagok kémiai módosításával foglalkozik. Ezen anyagok különlegessége a méretükben rejlik.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

We propose spectroscopic investigation of the effect of chemical modification on the properties of low-dimensional materials. The project is curiosity-driven basic research with an outlook for applications. Carbon nanotubes, boron nitride nanotubes, graphene and most recently two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides attracted the attention of the research community. While they already possess unique features, their chemical modification can open up new paths leading to new applications. To design modified structures with tailored properties we need to understand the changes due to chemical modification on the macro, micro and nanoscale. The principal idea of the project is to chemically modify and characterize these materials. In addition to regular spectroscopic tools, scattering type nearfield infrared microscopy will be employed. This method can measure infrared response with 20nm spatial resolution. Our international collaborators can provide us complementary measurements. Combination of different characterization techniques will provide us further insight into the electronic structure of the modified materials.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The aim of the project is to characterize the chemical modification processes of low dimensional materials. We are planning to use macroscopic, microscopic and nanoscopic tools to get a deeper insight into the properties of the chemical process and the changes induced by the modification. We are planning to investigate the distribution of the functional groups on the surface at different degree of functionalization. We are interested in uniformity of the changes in the electronic structure on the nanoscale. We are going to investigate the possible interplay between neighboring functional groups or functionalized regions. We are interested in the possibility to open a bandgap in graphene or induce metallicity in the transition metal dichalcogenides by chemical functionalization on the macro- and nanoscale. We are going to determine the filling ratio in case of different filling methods for carbon and boron nitride nanotubes. We are looking for the best combination of host, guest and method. We are planning to probe locally the molecules inside the nanotube by nearfield microscopy. We will follow chemical reactions inside the nanotubes. Due to the basic-research nature, other interesting questions might appear during the project. Our goal is to widen the knowledge on this field by a systematic study of the samples with a combination of different investigation techniques.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Carbon and boron nitride nanotubes possess unique structures. They have a nanosized cavity which can be utilized in many ways. By filling them with molecules we can give the nanotubes new properties, like photoluminescence, magnetism etc. Another interesting topic is the posibility of chemical reactions inside the nanotube. In such a confined space reactions can take different pathways. By the combination of filling and sidewall functionalization we can explore the possibilities of interacting fillers and functional groups. The investigation of these questions is still an ongoing process where we can contribute.
Two-dimensional structures like graphene and single-layer transition metal dichacogenides are proposed to be the building blocks of new generation electronics or spintronics. Although they show promising characteristics these materials needs to be modified to be able to incorporate them in devices. There are various ways of modification: covalent attachment of functional groups or small molecules adsorbed on the surface. We are interested in the changes of the electronic structure due to the modification. The knowledge we gain form this study can help us to understand how to tailor material properties like opening a bandgap or lowering the contact resistance.
This field is intensively studied by many excellent research groups around the world. Our advantage is the right combination of characterization techniques and scientific background in the chemistry and physics of nanomaterials.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Even faster computers, better solar cells or new diagnostic methods, the revolutions in technology were always driven by scientific research. Materials science and engineering is the interdisciplinary field where chemistry, physics and engineering together create the new materials for the future. However, there is a long way from the discovery of a promising new material to their use in real life applications. Although these materials show unique features, the majority of the applications require tailored properties for their specific needs. In our project we are working on the chemical modification of some special materials. The unique character of these materials lies in their size. Nanotubes are small tube-like structures with their diameter a hundred thousand times smaller than a human hair. They are hollow - like regular tubes - and can be filled with small molecules to create new systems with interesting features. There are other special materials which are only a few atoms thick. They show quite remarkable electronic properties. To be able to create the future microprocessors based on these materials, we have to make some changes to their surface. In this project we try to clarify what is really happening to the materials during the modifications. Our results might open the way for these materials to be incorporated in real devices.

A kutatásaink során megvizsgáltuk a lehetséges nanocső töltési módszerek tulajdonságait, új molekulákkal bővítettük a nanocsőbe töltött anyagok listáját. Létrehoztunk szén és bor-nitrid nanocsővekben grafén nanoszallagkat. Infravörös közeltér mikroszkópiával vizsgáltunk szén nanocsövekben fémes klasztereket, bór-nitrid nanocsövekban fulleréneket és fotopolimerizációjukat. Kihasználva a bór-nitrid nanocsövek fonon-polaritonjának erősítő hatását sikerült közeltér mikroszkópiával igen csekély számú molekula spektrális jelét detektálni. Vizsgáltuk a szén nanocsövek egyedi Luttinger plazmonjainak csatolását a szubsztrát fononjaihoz, kimutattuk az ultraerős csatolás jelenlétét. Más csoportokkal kooperációban vizsgáltuk átmenetifém kalkogenidek katalitikus tulajdonságait, illetve a Jacutingaite réteges anyag kvantum spin Hall szigetelő tulajdonságait.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
During the four years of the project we have investigated various low dimensional materials. We have utilized mainly spectroscopic techniques. We modified some of these materials or created new ones with their help. In case of carbon and boron-nitride nanotubes (CNT, BNNT), we have filled the quasi one-dimensional cavity with small molecules. By external stimuli (heat, light) these molecules can react with each other. Due to the constrains of the cavity the reactions can yield different products. We have investigated different filling methods, filled the nanotubes with unreported new molecules. We successfully synthetized graphene nanoribbons in CNTs and BNNTs. With near-field infrared microscopy we detected metallic Ni clusters inside CNTs. By utilizing the enhancement effect of the phonon-polaritons of BNNTs we were able to detect a small number of fullerenes and follow their photo induced reactions inside the nanotubes. We have investigated the coupling of Luttinger-plasmons of CNTs with the phonons of different substrates. We showed the coupling strength is in the ultra-strong regime. In cooperation with other groups we have investigated the catalytic properties of transition metal chalcogenides and studied the quantum spin Hall insulator properties of a layered material Jacutingaite.
