magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kutatási projekt szilárdtestek pontszerű hibáinak multireferenciás állapotainak minden eddiginél pontosabb leírását célozza.
Köszönhetően a számolási technika jellegének elsőként leszünk képesek multi-referenciás, spin-szinglett kötött állapotok kvantitatíven jellemezni.
Nem csak a szokásos szakirodalmi mérhető mennyiségeket fogjuk tanulmányozni, hanem sok-rész korrelációs mértékeket is alkalmazni fogjuk melyeket korábban molekulákban vizsgáltunk.
Abban az esetben, ha hibrid módszerünk a standard VASP programcsomagba integrálásra kerül, más jellegű, felszín fizikai problémák és katalízisek VASP szimulációjában is elérhetővé válhat.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A kvantumbit állapotokat reprezentálható spin-triplett állapotok mért energia spektrumát pontosan visszaadják a sűrűségfunkcionál-elméleti (DFT) számolások.
A pályázatban egy hibrid módszert fogunk kifejleszteni, melyben önkonzisztensen ágyazunk a hibát jellemző aktív téren végzett multi-referenciás alapú hullámfüggvény számolást a DFT szimulációkban. Az új módszerrel lehetőségünk nyílik a bonyolult elektron szerkezetek pontos leírására.
Elsősorban a potenciális kvantumbitként alkalmazható különböző mély centrumok alacsony energiás spektrumát fogjuk feltérképezni. Másrészt alkalmazni fogjuk a nemrég általunk fejlesztett sok-rész korrelációs mértékeket a multi-referenciás kötött állapotok jellemzésére, melyek segíthetnének a kvantumbitek kontrollálhatóságának pontosabb megértésében.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Továbbá általánosítottuk a két-részes kölcsönös információ fogalmát, mellyel aromás rendszereket és a szakirodalomban vitatott kötési képpel rendelkező diatomos szén molekulát tanulmányoztunk.
A pályázati projekt a következő lépés az erősen korrelált rendszerek leírásában, egy számítási keretrendszert fogunk implementálni mely a meglevő kódunk számítási kapacitásait fogja jelentősen bővíteni. A bevezetendő hibrid DMRG-DFT kód elsősorban beágyazott szennyezők erősen korrelált állapotainak pontos leírására fokuszál, a de módszerünk hasznosnak bizonyulhat más, DFT-hez kapcsolódó kutatási témákban is.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Ebben a pályázatban szilárdtestek olyan pontszerű szennyeződéseit fogjuk vizsgálni új elméleti módszerekkel melyek a későbbiekben kvantumbitként használhatók. Egy olyan új, hibrid módszert tervezünk mellyel a rendszer bonyolult elektron struktúrával rendelkező kötött állapotai pontosan írhatók le, ezzel is segítve az anyag tulajdonságainak jobb megértését. A szokásos vizsgálatok mellett, sok-részes korreláció mértékeket is alkalmazni fogunk a különböző ponthiba állapotok osztályzására, mely segíthet az optimális kvantumbit állapotok azonosításában.
angol összefoglaló
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The research aims the theoretical description of multi-reference electronic states of point-like defects embedded in solids with unprecedented accuracy.
The project focuses on the design of an adequate hybrid method, which combines the advantages of mean-field-like and correlated methods, and on applications. The technical development relies heavily on existing code bases and extends their feasibility by the novel computational scheme.
As first application of the approach, we will investigate the low lying energy spectrum of various localized deep centers.
Thanks to the inherent multi-reference nature of the new technique, for the first time, we will be able to describe spin-singlet bound states with multi-reference character in quantitatively correct manner.
We will investigate not only the standard observables but we will apply multipartite correlation concepts which we studied previously in molecules.
Considering the topical nature of the research project, several publications of high impact are to be expected.
In the case of integration of our hybrid approach in the standard VASP program package, other VASP users specialized in surface science or in catalysis processes could benefit from our developments.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

In the last decade some localized impurities in solids spurred the interest as potential implementation of qubit. The importance of such qubit representation stems in the robustness against decoherence and in the individual addressability. The physics of such deep centers is in the focus of theoretical and experimental studies as well. The measured energy spectrum of spin-triplet states, which could represent the qubit, can be reproduced by density field theory (DFT) simulations.
Experiments suggests that the read-out process of the qubits could be achieved by taking advantage of the existence of a spin-selective non-radiative decay path through spin-singlet states. It has been shown using group theoretical arguments that these singlet state are of multi-reference character which is not treatable by the single-determinant-based DFT.
In the project, we will develop a novel hybrid approach, i.e., we will apply a multi-reference based wave function solver on the active space of the defect embedded in a DFT simulation self-consistently, in order to describe these complicated electronic structure correctly.
In particular, we will investigate the complete low lying energy spectrum of different types of deep centers which are potential qubit candidates.
We will also apply our recently developed multipartite correlation measures to characterize multi-reference bound states in various type of defects which could help to reveal further details of the controllability of qubits.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The numerical program package developed by the hosting research group (Budapest DMRG) is a versatile tool applied worldwide in various research projects to describe completely different strongly correlated interacting quantum systems in the field of solid state physics, nuclear physics and computational quantum chemistry. We designed and implemented the first hybrid CPU-GPU DMRG code which can gain a sixfold speedup compared to standard CPU implementation.
In addition, some of the hosting research group were the first in the world to implement a DMRG code for relativistic quantum chemical and nuclear physical models.
Besides numerical developments, we also introduced quantum information based concepts to describe properties of chemical bonds with two centers. As theoretical work, we generalized the concept of bipartite mutual information in order to measure multipartite correlations which we have applied to describe the correlations of aromatic molecules and the diatomic carbon with disputed bonding picture.
In the project, which is the next step in the description of strongly correlated materials, we will implement a computational framework to further extend the capabilities of our current code. The hybrid DMRG-DFT approach focuses primarily on the precise description of strongly correlated states in embedded impurities, nevertheless our novel approach can be a useful tool in other DFT related research topics as well.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The revolutionary impact of transistor-based classical computers on every-day life can be compared only to the invention of the wheel or the steam engine. The data of classical devices is stored in units called bits which represent exclusively one of two possible states. In practice, the two states are generally realized by an electrical voltage difference in computing processes. Even though modern computers date back to the 1950s, the fundamentals of semiconducting physics, which led to the development of transistor, were grounded decades earlier. The situation of our days shows some resemblance to the early 20th century, i.e., the basic research of theoretical and experimental background of quantum computing devices is flourishing. The complexity of realizing quantum computing devices can be illustrated by the fact that the effective physical representation of quantum information unit, so called qubit, is still a challenge which motivates this project as well. Currently, nobody can predict the full potential of quantum computers, but it is proven that it will revolutionize data encryption and the simulation of quantum systems.
In this project, we plan to study pont-like impurities in solids, which has large potential in realizing qubits, by applying novel theoretical
techniques. We design a new hybrid approach to accurately simulate bound states with complex electronic structure in order to understand better the properties of the material.
Besides the standard investigations, we will also introduce multipartite correlation measures which could help to classify different type of defects and to find optimal defect states as qubits.

A posztdoktori kutatási program pontszerű szennyezővel rendelkező szilárdtestek elektron szerkezetének elméleti vizsgálatára fókuszált. A fejlesztett kódot is felhasználva a negatívan töltött bór vakanciával szennyezett hexagonális bór-nitrid sík elektro-mágneses tulajdonságait vizsgáltuk. A kapott elméleti eredmények jó egyezésben vannak a legfrissebb kísérleti adatokkal, továbbá a pontszerű hibával kódolt kvantumbit jelölteket tartalmazó félvezetők jellemzésében hasznosíthatók. Ezeken kivül lokális szennyezővel jellemzett elméleti modellek érdekes tulajdonságait is vizsgáltuk. Egy új számolási módszert is javasoltam, mellyel a vizsgált rendszerek nagy pontossággal írhatók le (nem csupán a kvantumkémiai statikus, hanem adinamikus korrelációs járulékok is konzisztensen figyelembe vehetők).
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
The postdoctoral research program focused on the theoretical investigation of the electronic structure of solids with point-like defect. During the supported period, distinct computational schemes for the treatment of static correlations in defected semiconductors were implemented and benchmarked which problems are not treatable with canonical methods. Applying also the developed computational scheme, detailed magneto-optical description of the negatively charged boron vacancy in hexagonal boron nitride sheet was provided. The obtained theoretical results are in agreement with very recent experimental findings and the predictions might pave the way toward the characterization of semiconductors hosting defect-based qubit candidates. Furthermore, relevant properties of model systems with local impurity are also investigated. In addition, a novel computational approach was also proposed to provide an accurate description of the investigated problem (retrieving not only quantum chemical static but also dynamical correlation effects in a consistent manner).
