magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kutatás célja kettős, részben gyakorlati, részben elméleti.
A vizsgálandó, fő kutatási témák:
egy veszélyeztetett, szóbeli nyelv dokumentációnak elméleti és gyakorlati megfontolásai;
a főnevek és igék morfológiai viselkedésének kvantitatív megközelítése.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A versengő minták megjelenését befolyásoló analógiás források ereje a gyakoriságukon alapszik.
a főnévi rendszer, az öröklött-kölcsönzött kettősség megbomlása, morfológiai variáció a kölcsönzött hímnemű főnevek és az összes nőnemű főnév között;
az igei rendszer, a magánhangzó tövű igék különféle inflexiós mintái és kölcsönhatásuk a képzőkkel;
fonológiai variáció a mutató névmásoknál;
a romani, mint veszélyeztetett kisebbségi nyelv dokumentálása.
A kutatásban az alábbi kérdésekre keressük a választ:
Hogyan adhatunk számot a romani igei és főnévi morfológiában található különböző mintázatokról morfológiai konstrukciók, sémák és gyakorisági hatások segítségével?
Mik azok a legfontosabb tényezők, amelyeket figyelembe kell venni egy társadalmi szempontból érzékeny, veszélyeztetett nyelv dokumentálásához?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A másik célkitűzésünk a variáció megközelítése több lehetséges aspektusból.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The aim of the research is both practical and theoretical. On the one hand, we would like to take the preparatory steps towards a large-scale, nationwide documentation and the creation of a theoretically practicable, quantitatively researchable corpus of the Romani varieties spoken in Hungary, while we can still find native speakers of all the dialects. This would be unparalleled even on the international scene of Romani linguistics, and is in line with the most modern approaches of documentary linguistics, corpus linguistics and empirically based, data-oriented theoretical linguistic research.
On the other hand, based on more data, we would like to reconsider variation in Romani and, besides identifying possible dialectological and sociolinguistic aspects that might play a role in certain instances of variation, expand our analysis of the morphological variation, that is, when one linguistic unit has got more than one realisation, to as many varieties as possible. The unique feature, often emphasised in the relevant literature as the rigid dichotomy between the inherited and borrowed parts of the lexicon and the related morphological patterns, is disappearing in Lovari; its erosion results in borrowed masculine nouns and any feminine noun being inflected according to both patterns, and several different patterns in the past tense of vocalic verbs, which can be best modelled by way of positing constructions and different analogical sources and their influence.
The main research topics to be examined are:
theoretical and practical considerations of the documentation of an endangered oral language;
a quantitative look at the morphological behaviour of nouns and verbs.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The basic theoretical hypothesis behind our proposed research is that different morphological and phonological patterns and their frequencies influence morphological variation, especially when this variation is either of an intra-speaker or of an intra-group nature and it cannot be accounted for by other (geographical, sociolinguistic) factors. The morphology and phonology of Romani shows several instances of variation which we presume are caused by different analogical sources, and the phenomenon can best be grasped with the use of morphological constructions or schemata. The strength of the analogical sources influencing the appearance of the competing patterns is based on their frequency. Our practical problem is that, in order to be able to quantify these strengths, we need to have a sufficient amount of data. However, no quantitatively analysable corpus of Romani exists, and documentation and data collection poses several questions.
Our main areas of study are:
the nominal system, the erosion of the inherited-borrowed dichotomy, morphological variation among borrowed masculine nouns and all feminine nouns
the verbal system, the various inflectional patterns of vocalic classes and their interference with derivational and other markers;
phonological variation in the demonstrative pronouns;
documentation of Romani as an endangered minority language.
Our research questions are:
How can we account for the different patterns in the verbal and nominal morphology of Romani with morphological constructions and schemes, and frequency effects?
What are the most important aspects to be taken into consideration when documenting a socially sensitive, endangered language?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Our research project is significant from several aspects of linguistics. One important innovation is the introduction of documentary linguistics and corpus linguistics to a currently widely spoken but endangered language of Europe and Hungary. The fate of Romani is not yet foreseeable, but the transmission of the language from one generation to the next is on the decrease. Even if attempts at revitalisation lead to some success, it can easily mean the relearning of the language, and not an unbroken succession of native speakers, which also raises more general questions as for the relationship between language, group belonging and identity. Romani, although widely studied, is not a well-documented language in the modern linguistic sense, which is further complicated as there is no written standard and there is no country where Romani would be the main official language, unlike most other minority languages. Activists are trying to promote the use of Romani in international communication and in the public sphere, and develop writing systems and educational materials. However, these activities, as well as linguistic, social and sociolinguistic research can only be based on data coming from reliable native sources.
One theoretical novelty is the improvement and use of constructions or schemata in explaining morphological variation based on surface forms. This can bring us closer to understanding cognitive processes, as recent neurolinguistic research also suggests that a usage-based approach to grammar can provide insights into how grammars can come closer to reflecting what our brains do. Recent experimental research in phonetics, speech perception and speech production suggests that speakers employ a rich and detailed memory of words in an unanalysed form. Our research is innovative in that we examine and test these new results in the domain of morphology.
Another, theoretically significant aspect is a more complex and open-minded approach to variation. When looking at certain variables, linguists have usually been preoccupied with the possible sociolinguistic or geographical-dialectological reasons. We would like to examine whether certain instances of variation can be traced back to more than just one factor.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

We have got two objectives. One of them is to begin the documentation of the different varieties of the Romani language spoken in Hungary and to continue the building of a corpus, as modern documentation and a researchable, large enough corpus of Romani are missing on an international level. Romani is an Indo-Aryan language spoken all over Europe, and three of its four main dialect branches are still represented in Hungary. These are the Vlax dialects, for example Lovari, the Central dialects, where Romungro belongs, and the Northern dialects, one of which is Sinti. The number of native speakers of Romani in Hungary is decreasing according to recent demographic surveys, and it is considered a definitely endangered language by UNESCO. For example, we could only find a few speakers of the Sinti variety, so it can easily happen that these are the last moments when we can study the language in its most authentic form. The project is also significant in terms of language contact, its effects on language change and language acquisition, as Romani is in constant interaction with the main language of the country, in our case, Hungarian.
Our other objective is to approach variation from several possible aspects. Variation occurs when one linguistic unit is realised in more than one different form. This frequently happens in Romani, and while several instances of variation have been looked at from different points of view, including sociolinguistic and geographical aspects, we would like to see whether they can be traced back to more than just one factor, and which ones are instances of variation that can best be explained by analogical and frequency effects of surface forms.

1. Megtettük a Magyarországon beszélt cigány változatok nagyobb szabású, országos szintű dokumentációjához és egy elméleti nyelvészetben is használható, mennyiségileg kutatható korpuszhoz vezető kezdeti lépéseket, beszélt nyelvi anyagot gyűjtve, felvéve és átírva a ma használatos cigány összes létező változatából. Kutatásunk összhangban áll a dokumentációs és a korpusznyelvészet legkorszerűbb áramlataival, lehetővé téve az empirikus alapú, adatorientált elméleti nyelvészeti kutatást. 2.
