magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A sugárzás körülbelül háromezer milliszekundumos pulzárból jön, amik gömbhalmazokban keletkezett. A gömbhalmazok dinamikai súrlódással vándoroltak be a galaxismagba, míg az ottani árapályerők szét nem szakították azokat, tartalmuk az ottani tartományban szétoszlott. A milliszekundumos pulzárokon túl azonban a gömbhalmazok szabad fekete lyukakat és fekete lyuk kettősöket is tartalmaznak. Ezen csatornán keresztül érkező fekete lyukak eloszlására jelenleg nincsenek elméleti vizsgálatok, pedig ezen populáció a LIGO-VIRGO gravitációshullám detektorok által mérhető eseményeknek lényeges forrása lehet.

A LIGO detektorok elérték a fekete lyukak rendszeres detektálásához szükséges erzékenységet.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A modern fizika egyik legnagyobb megoldatlan problémája a sötét anyag eredete.

Mivel a gömbhalmazok és a galaxismag dinamikáját gravitációs hatások dominálják amit számítógépen szimulálhatunk, a vizsgálni kívánt mechanizmussal keletkező fekete lyuk kettősökre lényeges ismeretlenektől mentes jóslatokat tehetünk.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A gravitációshullámok mérésével korábban megoldatlan lényeges kérdésekre kaphatunk választ. A megfigyelt ütközéseket az Univerzum 25%-át alkotó sötét anyag magyarázhatja, amennyiben az fekete lyukakból áll. A kutatás során a galaxis közepén megfigyelt nagyenergiás elektromágneses gamma sugárzás segítségével következtetünk a gravitációshullám források eredetére. A nagyenergiás elektromágneses sugárzás azt mutatja, hogy középre vándorló csillaghalmazok jelentős mennyiségű neutroncsillagot szállítottak a galaxisok közepére. Elméletileg megállapítható, hogy ezen folyamat fekete lyukakkal is be kellett hogy népesítse ugyanezen régiókat. A projekt a fekete lyuk ütközések értelmezésével vizsgálja az Univerzum szerkezetét.
angol összefoglaló
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

We propose to explore the implications of the internationally outstanding publication Brandt és Kocsis (2015, ApJ, 812, 15) which accumulated 32 independent citations within 18 months. We investigate connections with three other outstanding publications [O’Leary, Kocsis, Loeb, 2009, 112 independent citations in 8 years; O’Leary, Meiron, Kocsis 2016, 14 independent citations in 9 months; Bartos, Kocsis, Haiman, Marka 2017, 14 independent citations) ]. We examine the distribution of compact objects in the galactic bulge and explore the implications on the expected rates of gravitational wave events. We show that the globular clusters which sink to the inner regions of the galaxy deliver black holes and black holes binaries which represent an imporant source population for the LIGO/VIRGO detectors. We examine the mass, distance, and eccentricity distributions of merging black holes, which may be essential for identifying this source population.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

In Brandt and Kocsis (2015) we investigated the characteristics of the high energy gamma ray excess emmission observed from the direction of the galactic bulge with the Fermi satellite. We found that contrary to previous claims, this emmission may be explained by standard astrophysical processes, and there is no need to invoke physics beyond the standard model, such as dark matter annihilation. This result is now widely accepted. The radiation is emitted by approximately three thousand millisecond pulsars which form in globular clusters. The globular clusters sink to the galactic bulge due to gravitational dynamical friction, where they were disrupted by gravitational tidal effects, spilling their contents in that region. In addition to millisecond pulsars, the globular clusters also contain black holes and black hole binaries. Currently there are no predictions for the distribution of the black holes from this source class, however, this population may represent an important source for LIGO-VIRGO gravitational wave detectors.

The LIGO detectors have reached the sensitivity to detect gravitational waves from black hole mergers in the Universe. The main question now is to identify the main astrophysical source population for the observed mergers. Based on the distribution of events, it is possible to distinguish different source populations with the LIGO-VIRGO measurements. The black holes delivered to the galactic bulge by globular clusters, the focus of this study, is a possibility that has not been discussed to date. We examine if this population may explain the event rates of LIGO-VIRGO sources and study the interaction of this population with dark matter.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

We are witnessing the dawn of a new field of research: gravitational wave astrophysics. Gravitational waves allow us to make novel observations of regions with which we can study previously unanswered questions. One of the great unsolved problems is the origin of dark matter in the Universe. Recently it was shown that dark matter may be made of stellar mass black holes (Bird et al. 2016), which generate black hole mergers due to occasional close encounters suggested by us previously in O'Leary, Kocsis, Loeb (2009) that is consistent with recent detections. However mergers may be caused by many other mechanisms even if dark matter is not made of black holes. We have an incomplete understanding of these mechanisms, which sometimes depend on processes not well understood.

Another recent revolutionary suggestion to explain the high energy gamma ray excess from the Galactic center was that observed signal is the result of annihilation of dark matter particles which are not included in the standard model. By analyzing the excepted emmission of infalling globular clusters, this claim was rejected in our paper Brandt & Kocsis (2015). We propose to explore the implications of this idea for the explanation of gravitational wave sources. Since the dynamics of globular clusters and galactic bulges are driven by gravitational effect which we can simulate, we may obtain robust estimates of the proposed source population of black hole mergers free of major theoretical unknowns. This distinguishes these sources from many other suggestions proposed to explain the LIGO events. If the predicted mass and eccentricity distribution of mergers is confirmed by LIGO-VIRGO and LISA observations, this would be a significant result.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The detection of gravitational waves opened a new field in astrophysics. With the measurement of gravitational waves we can find answers to significant open questions. One proposed possibility to explain the observed black hole mergers is to suggest that dark matter, which constitutes 20% of the mass in the universe, is made of stellar mass black holes. We propose to study the origin of the electromagnetic emission of the galactic center. This suggests that star clusters which sank to the Galactic center delivered a significant population of neutron stars. This process must have also delivered black holes to this region. The project aims to examine the structure of the Universe by studying the interpretation of black hole mergers.

Kiszámoltuk a középnehéz fekete lyukak hatását a gravitációshullám eseményekre vonatkozólag.
We have published 34 few author papers in scientific journals, and one additional paper is submitted for publication. These publications received 945 citations. We have also published a review paper chapter, which received 246 citations. Four papers have been published in the prestigeous Physical Review Letters, one was featured on its cover. We have presented our results at international conferences and workshop in a total of 61 talks and poster presentations. We have shown that gravitational wave sources measured by the LIGO-VIRGO detectors could originate from globular clusters which fall into galactic nuclei, that the black holes form disks in galactic nuclei, and the orbital planes are segregated by mass. We studied the effect of intermediate mass black holes on gravitational wave sources. We determined the accuracy of measuring the physical parameters of gravitational wave events from galactic nuclei and their expected rates. We calculated the properties of black hole collisions in triple and quadruple systems. We have shown that black hole collisions are common in active galactic nuclei which may be distinguished by measuring the mass and spin distribution with LIGO-VIRGO. Repeated stellar mergers lead to the formation of supermassive black holes. We have shown that black hole binaries may exhibit eccentricity oscillations that may be measured by LISA.
