magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

(a) javítható a csoportelméleti Jordan-Hölder tétel (Czédli-Schmidt [95]; a számozás a vezető kutató honlapján levő publikációs listára utal);
(b) érdekes kombinatorikai kérdések merülnek fel a szigetek matematikai aspektusainak vizsgálatakor (K. Horváth számos cikke és az ilyen vizsgálatokat elindító Czédli [75]);
(c) tovább erősödött ez a kapcsolat bizonyos hálók összeszámlálásakor (pl. Czédli, Gyenizse és mások [118] cikke által megjelent az e=2,71… szám a hálóelméletben);
(d) tisztán geometriai eredmény is született, hiszen pl. Czédli [139] a körökre ad jellemzést;
A két projekt célkitűzése majdnem teljesen diszjunkt.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

(A) Reprezentálhatók-e a véges konvex geometriák (magasabb dimenziós) gömbökkel?
(D) A szerző honlapjáról elérhető Czédli: Cometic functors …

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Harmadrészt két fiatal kutató bevonásával a „staféta átadása” is megkezdődik.
A projekt eredményeinek várható jövőbeli hasznosításának színterét elsősorban a Doktori Iskola jelenti. Másrészt a hálókon (és részbenrendezett halmazokon) értelmezett függvények vizsgálata esetleg a döntéselmélet számára is érdekes lehet.
A pályázók az egyik szenior kutató kivételével a vezető kutató társszerzői, emellett a két szenior kutató is társszerzőségi viszonyban áll. A pályázók sok közelmúltbeli publikációja elég jól illeszkedik a pályázat célkitűzéseihez.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Másrészt a hálóelmélet fejlesztését is tervezzük speciális hálókat vizsgálva.
A remélt eredmények a – hazai és külföldi hallgatóknak tartandó – matematika doktori képzést segítik majd a Szegedi Tudományegyetemen.
angol összefoglaló
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

In the last decade, the applicants discovered some fruitful connections between lattice theory and other fields of mathematics. For example, it appeared that with the help of lattices,
(a) we can improve the Jordan-Hölder theorem for groups; see Czédli – Schmidt [95] (in the website of the principal investigator);
(b) interesting combinatorial questions arise at studying mathematical aspects of islands; see Czédli [75] and numerous papers of E. K. Horváth;
(c) the connection between lattices and combinatorics got stronger while enumerating certain lattices; e.g., the constant e=2.71… entered lattice theory in Czédli, Gyenizse at al [118];
(d) as a purely geometric result, Czédli [139] characterized circles;
(e) the theory of islands and a recent computer game of Czédli – Makay [136] can popularize mathematics.
Continuing what is listed above, the project aims at problems motivated by lattice theory and/or geometry. The papers above make it clear that each of (a) – (e) is based on lattice theory. This is why the project, in addition to studying areas related to lattices or geometry and in order to benefit from our experience shown by the outstanding publication required for this application, aims also at studying special lattices within lattice theory.
The present team is included also in the project OTKA K115518. The aims of the two projects are almost fully disjoint, because lattices occur in OTKA K115518 only as those of quasiorderings or principal congruences.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

In addition to what already has been outlined in the “Summary of the research and its aims for experts” part, we add the following aims and problems.
(A) Can we represent finite convex geometries with spheres? By Adaricheva and Bolat (see also Czédli [116, 138]), we cannot do that with circles. Kincses https://arxiv.org/abs/1701.03333 proved that it is not possible with ellipses either, but it is possible with ellipsoids. Another question is which convex geometries are representable with ellipses or circles.
(B) Some geometries, like the convex and the projective ones, are equivalent to some special lattices, whereby some geometrical properties have significant lattice theoretical counterparts. Following Jónsson, Day, Takách, and Cs. Szabó’s results, we intend to find the lattice theoretical counterparts of further geometric properties.
(C) We will develop a new computer program for the word problem of lattices, since the performance of the earlier one is not sufficient. Armed with this program, we will study Freese – Jezek – Nation’s monograph, searching for possible new results.
(D) We will search for new applications of the functor introduced by Czédli: Cometic funtors … (see his website).
(E) We intend to develop Couciero, Maróti, Waldhauser and Zádori’s result on interpolation with lattice quasi-polynomials, motivated by decision theory, to interpolation with more general polynomials.
These are only the first steps and the solution of none of the problems (A) – (E) is guaranteed. But, probably, starting in these directions, there will be results that fit the goals outlined in the “Summary of the research and its aims for experts” part.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Hungary was one of the main centers of lattice theory from the sixties to the eighties; this was witnessed by Gábor Szász, E. Tamás Schmidt, András P. Huhn, Ervin Fried and (at the beginning) George Grätzer. Although this “golden era” is over, the future of Hungarian lattice theory can be guaranteed, mainly because of the following three features of the present project.
First, strengthening the attractiveness of lattice theory is included among the targets of the project. Similarly to the previous years, there is a chance to raise the interest of not only algebraists but also of combinatorists and geometers, and we also have a chance to continue the fruitful collaborations with colleagues from Novi Sad.
Second, our plan to investigate special lattices and focus on connections between lattice theory and geometry goes well with related intentions of foreign colleagues, including G. Grätzer, K. Adaricheva, and J.B. Nation.
Third, the inclusion of two young colleagues in the project also serves the future.
The principal investigator is the head of the Doctoral School of Mathematics in Szeged. Broadening the scope of attractiveness of lattice theory is important for the Doctoral School, especially because one of the senior researchers will have a foreign PhD student from September; the Doctoral School will be the main scene of utilization of the results of the project. Also, the connection of lattice-valued (and poset-valued) functions to decision theory might also be interesting.
Except for a senior researcher, every participant is a coauthor of the principal investigator. The two senior researchers are coauthors of each other. Many publications of the team from the last years fit the targets of the project. These facts indicate that, with respect to its aims, the project is unique, reasonable, and realistic. The report on the 2016 Szőkefalvi-Nagy Medal and on the Birkhäuser-Grätzer prize has been attached because of its connections to the antecedents of the project.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Lattice theory is a part of mathematics that captures the concept of hierarchy at an abstract level. For example, the subsets of a given set form a lattice in which the hierarchy is described by the subset relation. Also, the set of integer numbers is a lattice in which the hierarchy is described by the “less or equal” relation.
Among the early experts of lattice theory, we can find John von Neumann. Lattice theory has a strong tradition in Hungary. The last decade witnessed several successful attempts in which the participants of the present project managed to establish fruitful connections between lattice theory and other fields of mathematics. Among other results, mentioning widely comprehensible things only, a computer game and a new characterization of circles with an elementary geometric property came to existence. As the earlier research shows, these fruitful connections had not been achieved without developing “pure” lattice theory.
One aim of the project is to discover further useful connections between lattice theory and other fields of mathematics and to develop those fields that are already connected with lattice theory. Also, the project intends to develop lattice theory itself by investigating special lattices.
The expected results will contribute to the training of – foreign and Hungarian – PhD students of mathematics at the University of Szeged.

Zárójelentés

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
A KH 126581 pályázatban alapkutatásokat végeztünk főleg a hálóelmélet terén.
The KH 126581 project was devoted to theoretical research, mainly in lattice theory. The results have been formulated in 18 papers and three computer programs have been developed; their exploitation in PhD training has already begun. We determined the largest, second largest, ..., 4th or 5th largest numbers of congruences and subalgebras of n-element lattices and semilattices X, describing the structures giving rise to these numbers. We also determined the smallest number f(lattice,congruence,n)=2^(n-5) such that whenever an n-element lattice X has at least f(lattice,congruence,n) congruences, then X is planar. The analogously defined f(semilattice,subsemilattice,n)=127*2^(n-8) and f(nearlattice,subnearlattice,n)=83*2^(n-8) have also be given. Pairs (s,t) of cardinals such that the free lattice FL(s) can be embedded into FL(t) in a selfdual and symmetric way have been determined. A connection between the centralizer clones C of finite lattices and the solution sets of systems of equations has been established. Because of space limitation, no details of our results on (a) the clones C above, (b) the associativity of matrix groupoids over lattices, (c) residuals of lattice-valued functions, (d) a convex combinatorial property, (e) constructibility, and (f) medians in semimodular lattices are given here.
