magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kutatási projekt 4 éve alatt a plazmonikus térnövekmény femtoszekundumos időskálán bekövetkező változásait szeretném vizsgálni különböző nanorendszereken, kiemelt figyelmet fordítva a plazmontér időfejlődésének feltérképezésére. A plazmonikus fotoelektronok spektroszkópiáján alapuló, közelmúltban publikált térnövekmény mérési módszerünket autokorrelációs technikával ötvözve időbontott vizsgálatokat tervezek a különböző nanostruktúrákon gerjesztett plazmonterekről. A plazmongerjesztés folyamatát kísérő töltéseloszlás-változások vizsgálatához ultragyors ellipszometriát fogok használni.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A közelmúltban fejlesztett módszerünkkel lehetőségünk nyílt a fémes nanostruktúrák közelében kialakuló plazonikus térnövekmény értékének mérésére a fotoemittált, majd a nanostruktúrák terében gyorsuló elektronok kinetikus energiájának mérése és analízise révén. Ez a mérési módszer jelenlegi formájában is számos kísérleti lehetőséget kínál például a Raman-spektroszkópiában, szenzorikában és fotókatódként alkalmazható minták kialakításának optimalizálásánál. Ennél is fontosabb azonban, hogy a fotoelektronok a plazmontér időbeli lefutásáról is információval tudnak szolgálni, ha rögzítjük a nanostruktúrákból kilépő elektronok nemlineáris autokorrelációját. Ellentér alkalmazása mellett a legnagyobb térnövekménnyel jellemezhető területekről gyűjthetünk információt kiemelkedő tér- és időbeli felbontás mellett, betekintést nyerve a plazmontér dinamikáját jellemző folyamatokba.
Kissé eltérő nézőpontból vizsgálhatjuk a plazmongerjesztés folyamatát ultragyors ellipszometria segítségével, ahol a módszer elsődlegesen a töltésfluktuációk következtében bekövetkező optikai változásokról ad számot. A töltéseloszlás változásainak időbontott vizsgálata egyrészt olyan alapkutatás jellegű kérdésekre adhat választ, mint a plazmonok lokalizációs folyamata, másrészt alkalmazások szempontjából is fontos információkkal szolgálhat például a plazmonok által erősített fotokémia területén.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatási projekt három fő részre osztható. Az első rész különböző alkalmazásokban (pl. szenzorika) használatos plazmonikus struktúrákon mérhető maximális térnövekmény meghatározását célozza. A kísérletek eredményeképp olyan területeken érhető el fejlődés, mint például a nagyérzékenységű szenzorok, egy molekula detektálását lehetővé tevő spektroszkópiai módszerek, optikai kapcsolók ultragyors információfeldolgozáshoz, vagy bármi más olyan jellegű eszköz fejlesztése, ahol a plazmonikus térnövekmény fontos szerepet játszik.
A kutatás második témája rendkívül rövid, néhányciklusú plazmonok gerjeszthetőségének vizsgálata, amelyek többek között ultragyors nanoméretű optoelektronikai eszközök fejlesztésében lehetnek fontosak. A kutatás tárgyát képező nanostruktúrák már korábban is fontos szerepet játszottak a fotovoltaikus, szenzorikai és más egyéb alkalmazásokban.
Az első két mérési terv a fotoemittált, majd a plazmontérben gyorsított elektronok detektálásán alapul. Ezek mellett, mintegy kiegészítve ezeket, ultragyors ellipszometriai elrendezésben fogom vizsgálni a plazmongerjesztéssel járó töltéssűrűség fluktuációkat. Előreláthatóan ezek a vizsgálatok mind a töltések időbeli változásait kihasználó alkalmazásokban, mind pedig az alapvető gerjesztési folyamatok időfejlődésének feltérképezésében alapvető információkkal szolgálhatnak.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A térbeli koncentrálódás mellett a folyamat további fontos velejárója a lokális térerősségek nagymértékű megnövekedése, amely akár a 100-szoros értéket is elérheti a nanostruktúrák jelenléte nélkül megfigyelhető térerősséghez képest.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

During the 4-year research period my aim is to study the few-femtosecond dynamics of plasmonic field enhancement on different systems both experimentally and theoretically, focusing mainly on the time evolution of the excited plasmon field with different methods. Time resolved experiments of nanoplasmonic fields generated on different types of metal nanostructures will be performed by combining plasmonic photoelectron spectroscopy with autocorrelation technique. Temporal information on the charge distribution changes following plasmon excitation will be obtained with ultrafast ellipsometry. These two complementary techniques can foster the deeper understanding of the time evolution of plasmonic fields on unique, few-fs timescales.
This research topic is expected to earn significant international attention in the ultrafast nanooptics and ellipsometry communities in the upcoming years because of its pioneering nature, enabling the dissemination of the results in 6-8 refereed international journal publications during the project, mainly in medium (IF>3) and high-impact journals (IF>6) including also multidisciplinary ones. The project will enable the supervision of 1 PhD and 2 MSc students helping them to become acquainted with experimental research in an internationally competitive laboratory.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

With our recently developed method, the maximum field enhancement of any metallic surface structure can be exactly measured by analyzing the kinetic energy distribution of photoemitted electrons accelerated in the nearfield of the nanostructures. With this tool, we can already test real-life Raman spectrosocpic, sensoric and photocathode samples for field enhancement independently, yielding important information for sample design. More importantly, photoelectrons can also provide information about the temporal evolution of the plasmonic nearfield, if we record nonlinear autocorrelation traces with the help of photoelectrons emitted from plasmonic nanoparticles. By applying a retarding potential, plasmon dynamics at hot spots can be probed with an unprecedented spatiotemporal sensitivity. We can gain fundamental information on plasmon dynamics including the buildup and decay of these collective electron oscillations.
A somewhat different aspect, namely the changes in the optical properties of metals during the plasmon excitation will also be studied by ultrafast pump-probe ellipsometry. The behavior of the dielectric function is inherently encoded by the changes of the charge distributions of the metals hosting the plasmons. The real-time monitoring of charge density can on one hand give insight into fundamental questions like plasmon localization, but also important for applications like plasmon enhanced photochemistry, being at the forefront of contemporary research.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

This research project contains three main parts. The first one is the determination of exact field enhancement factors on samples dedicated for real-life applications like sensorics. The proposed experiments have the potential to boost the development of sensors with high sensitivity, templates for single-molecule detection and spectroscopy, optical switches for ultrafast information processing or any other platform where the enhanced local fields are crucial.
The second part of the research aims at the investigation of unprecedentedly short, few-cycle plasmons. These can be applied in the development of ultrafast nanoscale optoelectronic devices. The metallic nanostructures involved to these studies already play an important role in photovoltaics, novel optical sensors and a number of other applications.
The first two measurement concepts are based on the detection of photoemitted electrons accelerated in the plasmonic field. In addition to these, the third research line involves a novel complementary technique, namely ultrafast ellipsometry enabling the determination of the charge density fluctuations upon plasmon excitation. Foreseeably, these studies will promote applications where the temporal changes of charge distribution play fundamental role, but also provides information on the time evolution of these basic excitation processes.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

If metal nanostructures with appropriate size and shape are illuminated by light, the energy of the light beam is concentrated to the nanoscale vicinity of these structures. In addition to nanoscale energy concentration, this process inherently goes together with the enormous increase of the local field strengths. This way, more than a hundredfold enhancement of electric fields was demonstrated. It is exactly because of the nanoscale spatial confinement and the ultrahigh field enhancement, why the so-called plasmonic nanoparticles play very important roles in many applications including photovoltaics, sensor development and even the detection of one single molecule with optical tools. The main goal of my investigations is to acquire fundamental information about the temporal properties of these excitations in metal nanoparticles and the resulting exact field strengths values. With the proposed research plan and the measurement methods, I will be capable of measuring these properties with novel experimental tools resulting in inputs for the design and manufacturing of sensors with ultrahigh sensitivity, information processing with previously unimaginable speed or other platforms for medical diagnostics, just to highlight a few.

A 2017-ben publikált, fotoelektron-spektroszkópián alapuló térnövekmény mérési módszerünk alkalmazhatóságának széleskörű vizsgálata során feltártuk a nanorészecskék, és ezek egyes hordozóinak lehetséges roncsolási effektusait különböző hullámhossz-tartományokban. A térnövekmény mérésére alkalmas elrendezésünket interferométerrel kombinálva kísérleti információt nyertünk a nanorészecskék forró pontjában megjelenő plazmonoszcillációk időalakjáról. Folytonos megvilágítású, és pumpa-próba ellipszometriai elrendezés segítségével feltártuk egy plazmonikus tulajdonságú vékony aranyrétegben, a plazmongerjesztés során megjelenő nagyenergiás elektronok rétegben elfoglalt helyzetét, energiájukat, és a plazmongerjesztést követő lecsengési folyamatokat.
kutatási eredmények (angolul)
During the research project, my aim was to explore different aspects of plasmon excitation and the related field enhancement. We thoroughly examined the applicability of our recent photoelectron spectroscopy-based field enhancement measurement method. Related to this, we revealed the possible damage effects of plasmonic nanostructures and the applied substrate materials in different wavelength ranges. Applying the method, we experimentally demonstrated the tunability of plasmonic field enhancement by changing the polarization state of the exciting laser pulse. We designed and fabricated a sample that is able to sustain ultrashort plasmon transients with large field enhancement factors. Furthermore, we formulated the criteria of the excitation of such plasmon transients. By combining our field enhancement measurement setup with an interferometer, we were able to gain information about the temporal shape of plasmon oscillations appearing at the hot-spots of nanostructures. With continuous wave and pump-probe ellipsometric approaches, we explored the location, energy and decay processes of the hot electrons generated in a plasmonic gold layer upon plasmon excitation.
