magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A javasolt kutatás a vezető kutató elméleti, kvantummechanikai számolásainak és a társkutatók kísérleti munkájának az együttműködésén alapszik. Az elmúlt négy évben végzett elektronszerkezeti számolásokat a nagyentrópiájú átlag kristályszerkezettel rendelkező ötvözeteken (HEAs) kiterjesztjük két, alkalmazás-orientált tulajdonság vizsgálatára és tervezésére: 1. olcsó és előnyös tulajdonságú magnetokalorikus ötvözetek, és 2. magas hőmérsékleten használható termoelektromos anyagok. Modellanyagként a Pd- és Al-koncentrációval hangolható tulajdonságú PdxCoCrFeNiPd és AlxCoCrFeNi (ahol x a Pd vagy Al-atomtört) típusú nagyentrópiájú anyagokat (HEM) fogjuk használni. Az első rendszer magnetokalorikus tulajdonságot mutat, míg a második elektrontranszport tulajdonságai széles határok között változtathatóak és potenciálisan alkalmas magashőmérsékletű termoelektromos anyag számára. Az elméleti becsléseket saját készítésű anyagmintákon fogjuk ellenőrizni. A mintákat indukciós olvasztással készítjük hideg tégelyben. Gyorshűtéssel 20-25 mikron vastag szalagot készítünk. A nagy olvadáspont különbségű elemek ötvözésére a mechanikai őrlés módszerét használjuk. A magas hőmérsékletű termoelemet a HEA ötvözet habosításával állítjuk elő. Végül HEM összetételeket és előállítási technológiákat javaslunk mindkét alkalmazáshoz.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A kísérleti kutatás számára az alapkérdés találni két olyan HEM összetételt és megfelelő előállítási technológiát, amelyek lehetővé teszik a következő alkalmazásokat: i) helyettesíteni a drága, ritkaföldfém valamint a mérgező elemeket (As) tartalmazó magnetolalorikus anyagokat nagyentrópiás ötvözetekkel, ii) lehetővé tenni a magashőmérsékletű termoelem előállítását ”élesztő” technológiával habosított HEM-ból, aminek kicsi a hővezető képessége, ugyanakkor nagy a termoelektromos együtthatója. Elméleti szempontból az alapkérdések: i) tervezni egy olyan többkomponensű ötvözetet, ami a szobahőmérséklet környékén mutat ferro-paramágneses és egyben szerkezeti átalakulást, és ii) megbecsülni a Seebeck együtthatót elektronszerkezeti számolásokból, Egy átlag kristályszerkezetet fogunk definiálni, hogy alkalmazhassuk a vezető kutató által kidolgozott kvantummechanikai számolási módszert és tervezhessük a HEM ötvözeteket a fent említett alkalmazásokhoz. A tervezett ötvözetek tulajdonságait szembesítjük a kísérletileg kapott mechanikai és fizikai tulajdonságokkal.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A ritkaföldfém elemek helyettesítése olcsó HEM anyaggal elsőszámú kihívása jelenleg a többmilliárdos hűtőgép iparnak világszerte.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A többkomponensű, nagyentrópiájú ötvözet összetételének kiválasztása első elveken alapuló kvantumechanikai számolások alapján történik.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The proposed research is based on the synergy of first principle quantum mechanical calculations of the principal investigator and the experimental investigations of the participant researchers. The electronic structure calculations carried out in the last 4 years on multi-component, high entropy alloys (HEA) based on a properly chosen average crystalline structure will be continued and extended towards two application-oriented properties: 1. finding high-entropy materials (HEMs) with advantageous magnetocaloric properties and 2. thermopower coefficient estimation from the derivative of electronic density of state at the Fermi level. Special attention will be paid to Pd-doped PdxCoCrFeNi and Al-doped AlxCoCrFeNi (x is the Pd and Al atomic portion) HEMs. The first system has promising magnetocaloric properties, whereas the second is a prospective high-temperature thermoelectric (HT-TE) material where the structural and transport properties can be spanned over a large interval. The predictions of the calculations will be tested on home-made samples. The samples of HEMs will be prepared by induction melting, rapid quenching from the melt and mechanical alloying. The HT-TE will be prepared from foamed HEMs. Finally, compositions and preparation technologies will be proposed for the two applications.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The research question for the experimental part is to find at least two HEM compositions and the appropriate preparation technologies for the following applications: i) to replace the expensive rare earth and poisonous elements (As) containing magnetocaloric materials with cheap and advantageous high entropy alloys, ii) to find a HT-TE alloy which can be foamed by “yeast” technology, to reduce the thermal conductivity. The question from theoretical point of view is (in the same order): i) to predict proper HEM compositions with both ferro-paramagnetic and structural transition around the room temperature, ii) to estimate the thermopower (Seebeck coefficient) from electronic structure calculations.
An average crystalline structure will be defined in order to treat the electronic structure within the density-functional theory using exact muffin-tin orbital method and full charge density technique implemented by the principal investigator (PI). The scope is to focus on electronic structure ab-initio calculations for designing compositions for the above mentioned applications. The designed compositions will be correlated with the mechanical, magnetic and physical properties in order to select the proper high-entropy alloys.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The mightiness of the ab initio computational quantum mechanics for materials engineers introduced by the PI is expressed by the fact that after four years of basic research (with the support of the OTKA grant 109570), we are able to estimate useful physical properties like ferro-para and structural transitions and thermopower. Such calculations are still very scarce in computational materials science even for single-phase alloys. Estimation of the targeted properties at the atomic level using a first-principle theory helps to predict useful quantitative and qualitative data for the development of functional high-entropy alloys which is in itself a challenging problem not yet solved in the literature. Replacing the rare earth elements with HEMs is a foremost problem of the multibillionaire fridge and air conditioner industry. Replacing the low melting temperature Pb(Se, Te, Bi) based thermoelectric materials with high- temperature HEMs is the first condition to find the proper method for recovering the waste heat energy. Functionalizing the HEMs in the above mentioned applications are still unsolved problems in the literature.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The target of the project is to design, develop and optimize two functional HEAs for magnetocaloric and high temperature thermoelectric materials. The selection of multicomponent and perhaps multi-phase HEMs will be made using ab initio theoretical calculations. For the first time in the literature, the ferro-paramagnetic and structural transition and the thermopower of HEMs will be estimated, which are the material parameters necessary for designing the above mentioned two applications. Since its discovery in 2004, this new class of alloys seems to promise a low-cost solution for many applications where the high strength combines with good ductility. We intend to prepare and study such HEMs experimentally and by computational quantum mechanics and at the end of the project, several prototypes of alloy compositions will be presented which are worth for further investigations for scaling up. Testing the laboratory scale prototypes of magnetocaloric HEMs and thermoelectric generators will be made in the Wigner laboratories.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
A projekt keretén belül az úgy nevezett nagyentrópiás anyagok (NEA-k) vizsgálatán dolgoztunk. Különös figyelmet szenteltünk az anyagok funkcionális (mágneses, termikus) tulajdonságaira. A NEA-k kiváló mechanikai tulajdonsággal, korrózióállósággal és termikus stabilitással rendelkeznek. A kémiai összetétel, előállítás és a tulajdonságok pontos ismerete elengedhetetlen új NEA-k gyors és hatékony tervezéséhez. A projektben sikeresen ötvöztük a számítógépes modellezést és a kísérleti anyagtudományt. A modellezésekhez első elveken alapuló módszereket alkalmaztunk.

The target of the project was to design, develop and optimize High Entropy Materials (HEMs) for application where functional properties (magnetic, thermophysical) are in the focus. Since its discovery in 2004, this new class of materials seems to promise a low-cost solution for many applications where high strength combines with good corrosion resistance and where rich functional properties are required. The selection of multicomponent and multi-phase HEMs has been made using ab initio theoretical calculations. We prepared several HEMs using experimental facilities, and characterized them with respect to the structural, chemical, magnetic and thermal properties in the Wigner laboratories and also at our partners. During the five-year project, we investigated a large number of HEMs and proposed alloy solutions for further investigations for scaling up. The project resulted in more than 70 publications in journals with impact factors ranging between 2 and 38 (58% have impact factors over 4.0).
