A kutatási projekt folyamán a kelet-közép-európai regionális központok fejlődési folyamatait tanulmányoztuk több aspektusból. A régió nagyvárosainak fejlődési pályái vizsgálatához a területi tőke és az innovációs miliő fogalmait, keretrendszerét tekintettük kiindulópontnak. A kutatás során áttekintettük és értékeltük azokat az elsődleges tényezőket, amelyek a régió nagyvárosainak fejlődési pályáit elsődlegesen alakítják. Ezen tényezők vizsgálata egyrészt a hosszabb távú történeti fejlődés aspektusából történt meg, a régió városfejlődési trendjeinek az európai centrumtérségekre jellemző folyamatokhoz képest mutatkozó specifikumait – megkésettség, megszakítottság, alacsonyabb urbanizációs szint – azonosítva. A tipizálható és az egyedi fejlődési pályák vizsgálatát egyrészt a társadalmi-gazdasági folyamatokat megragadó indikátorok másodelemzése, másrészt a vizsgált nagyvárosokról készített egyedi esettanulmányok segítették. A fejlődési pályák vizsgálata azt mutatja, hogy az elmúlt két évtized tekintetében a régió nagyvároshálózatának átstrukturálódásával párhuzamosan növekednek azok a belső egyenlőtlenségek, amelyek a regionális központok között a társadalmi-gazdasági fejlődés ütemében, illetve az európai városversenybe való bekapcsolódás lehetőségeiben mutatkoznak. Az eltérések elsősorban a városok és vonzásterületeik méretéből, a földrajzi elhelyezkedésből, illetve a gazdasági tevékenység struktúrájából, az annak megújításához szükséges erőforrások birtoklásából adódnak.

In the course of the project, we studied the development processes of the CEE regional centers from several aspects. For the examination of the development trajectories of the cities of the region, we considered the concepts and framework of territorial capital and innovation milieu as a starting point. During the research, we evaluated the factors that primarily shape the development trajectories of the regional centers. On the one hand, these factors were examined from the perspective of long-term historical development, identifying the specifics of the region's urban development trends compared to the processes characteristic of European core regions - delays, interruptions, lower levels of urbanization. Examination of typifiable and unique development paths was aided on the one hand by the secondary analysis of indicators capturing socio-economic processes, and on the other hand by individual case studies. The examination of the development paths shows that, in the past two decades, parallel to the restructuring of the region's metropolitan network, the internal inequalities that are manifested in the rate of socio-economic development between regional centers and in the possibilities of joining the European urban competition are increasing. The differences are mainly due to the size of the cities and their catchment areas, their geographical location, and the structure of economic activity, as well as the possession of the resources necessary for its renewal.
