A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A projekt fő célja megérteni a vasnál nehezebb elemek kozmikus eredetét.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Ezek a csillagok jelentős többletet mutatnak a vasnál nehezebb elemekből.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Ebben a projektben olyan különleges csillagokat vizsgálunk, amik nehéz elemekben gazdagok, például 100-szor több wolframot tartalmaznak a vashoz viszonyítva, mint Naprendszerünk.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The major aim of this project is to understand the cosmic origin of the elements heavier than iron. Neutron captures are responsible for the creation of these elements via the rapid (r) process (at neutron densities > 10^20 cm^-3) and the slow (s) process (< 10^10 cm^-3). While the former is believed to occur in neutron star mergers and potentially in rare types of core-collapse supernovae, the latter occurs mostly in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, i.e., stars of mass between one and roughly five times the mass of the Sun during the final stages of their lives. We want to obtain the most robust predictions possible from AGB s-process models by comparing the results of such models to spectroscopic observations of chemical abundances in AGB stars and their family. These include their progeny (post-AGB stars and planetary nebulae) as well as their binary companions, which have accreted mass from the AGB star (Ba stars, CH, and CEMP stars). Furthermore, we already have hints that a new process of neutron captures, the intermediate (i) process with neutron densities between those of the s and the r processes, also occurs in stars belonging to the AGB family. The modelling of this process is still in its infancy and the stellar sites in which it occurs still a puzzle. We want to identify new signatures of the i process to constrain its modelling and its stellar site.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The main research question addressed in this proposal is: Which stellar physical conditions and related neutron-capture processes can reproduce the abundances of the elements heavier than iron observed via spectroscopy in AGB stars and their family. These stars have large enhancements in the abundances of the elements heavier than iron and such excesses were not present when the star was born, instead, they were gained via local processes: either internal nucleosynthesis (in the case of AGB, post-AGB stars, and planetary nebulae), or accretion from an AGB companion (Ba, CH, and CEMP stars). We can safely assume that the patterns of all these stars should be explained by some flavour of the s or the i processes. Particularly constraining are the relative elemental abundances, e.g. Ce/Y, Ba/La, and Pb/W. This is because they depend almost exclusively on the neutron flux and the nuclear properties of the nuclei involved, and do not depend significantly on mixing and binary interactions, which are very uncertain. From these premises, we can answer the following main questions: 1) What are the potential effects of stellar mass, metallicity, rotation, overshoot at convective boundaries, and magnetic fields on the s process in AGB stars? 2) Which stars within the AGB family show the clear signature of the i process? To answer these questions we will analyse all the currently available spectroscopic information, focusing on the error analysis, and compare them to existing and new model predictions.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

After the discovery that the neutron star merger gravitational wave event GW170817 corresponds across the electromagnetic spectrum to a kilonova powered by radioactive elements produced by the r process, we are now somewhat confident that the r process occurs in neutron star mergers. However, it is not possible to observe from these events the detailed abundances of the elements produced, while we can observe these abundances directly in AGB stars and their family and use them to carefully test the s-process models. The first step to better understand the r process is to reach robust s-process predictions, as we propose here, because by subtracting AGB model s-process abundances from the total solar abundances we can derive the detailed r-process abundances to be used to constrain the r-process models (the “r-residual” method). Furthermore, in our paper Cseh et al. (2018) we concluded from analysis of s-process models and Ba stars that stellar cores must slow down somewhere along the giant branch; this same result was previously derived based on stellar seismology data obtained from the Kepler satellite mission. Our unique strength is in the ability to combine information from nucleosynthesis and from stellar seismology and in the diversity and complementarity of the expertise of our internationally recognised team, which includes modellers with specific expertise on AGB stars, the s and the i process, and observers with specific expertise on spectroscopy and stellar seismology.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Heavy elements make up much of our world and have allowed many of our techological advances: we make jewels with gold and silver, wear-resistant coatings from tungsten, car batteries using lead, and without the rare earth elements we would not have computer memories, DVDs, rechargeable batteries, cell phones, fluorescent lighting and much more. We even need to absorb iodine into our bodies to make the thyroid hormones that control our metabolism. What is common to all these elements is that they are heavier then iron, which means that their atomic nucleus is highly charged and the only way to create them in the Universe is by adding neutrons, which have no electric charge. Adding neutrons to atomic nuclei is easy, the problem is to have free neutrons available in the first place, since these decay into protons in 15 minutes. This is why we need special places within stars for neutron captures to happen. The main locations of neutron captures in the Universe are the hot regions deep inside giant stars and the mergers of neutron stars, such as that detected in August 2017 via its gravitational waves. In this project we investigate special stars that are very rich in heavy elements. They contain, for example, 100 times more tungsten relative to iron than the solar system. From these observations we derive how these stars make elements such as tungsten in their interiors and then eject them, so that that all these elements can be eventually found in the crust of rocky planets like the Earth.

We have investigated predominantly Barium (Ba) stars, which are stars enriched in the elements heavier than iron produced by the slow neutron capture process (the s-process) in the interior of their former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion star. Our comparison confirms that low mass (roughly in the range 2-3 M⊙), non-rotating AGB stellar models with the 13C(α,n)16O reaction as the main neutron source are the polluters of the vast majority of the considered Ba stars. However, the observed Nb, Mo, Ru/Sr and Ce, Nd, Sm/La ratios show median values higher or at the upper limits of the ranges of the model predictions. This unexplained feature calls for new neutron-capture models to be investigated. We have also used Ba stars to derive that large meteoritic stardust grains originated from AGB stars of metallicity higher than solar. We have found that new models of intermediate neutron captures (the i-process) can explain the puzzling Pd depletion in post-AGB stars located in the Magellanic Clouds. We also modelled the evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy of all the elements from C to U from first principles, and found that the observed abundances of the second (e.g., Ba) and third (Pb) s-process peak elements are well reproduced with our updated yields of s process from AGB stars. The first peak elements (e.g., Sr) are sufficiently produced by electron-capture supernovae together with AGB stars.
