We have (1) analyzed multilevel selection of surface-bound replicator systems, (2) developed further the theory of reproducing compartments as a form of group selection of early replicators, (3) experimentally constructed and analyzed an infrabiological system, (4) investigated the likely conditions during the establishment of the genetic code, and (5) worked out in detail the farming hypothesis of mitochondrial origins during early eukaryotic evolution. Ad 1: Catalytic promiscuity of ribozymes have aided the evolution of metabolism. Ad 2: Limited sexual reproduction of protocells (by occasional fusion and fission) is advantageous because is decreases the assortment load without a large threat by horizontally spreading molecular parasites. The formation of chromosomes is advantageous because it suppresses intragenomic conflict, reduces the assortment load and increases the error threshold for replication. Ad 3: We have put the autocatalytic formose rection into experimental water-in-oil growing compartments that reproduce and compete. Ad 4: Phylogenetic analysis of the genetic code indicates, contrary to previous suggestions, that it evolved under mesophilic rather than thermophilic conditions Ad 5: We have shown in an analytic model as well as by more detailed numerical simulations that ingested but not digested prey (farming) could have been advantageous in an environment with stochastically occurring periods of depleted prey resources.
