The main goal of the proposed project was to elucidate the regulation of algal and cyanobacterial light acclimation with special attention to the relationship between short- and long-term acclimation processes during chromatic acclimation. In the project we examined: (1) how short and long-term processes interplay and (2) how they contribute to maintaining the redox poise of photosynthesis in a changed light environment. By our investigations, we obtained valuable information on the environmental and light acclimation of various freshwater (Cyanobium gracile, Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803) and marine diazotrophic (Crocosphaera watsonii, Cyanothece sp. ATCC 51142) cyanobacterial strains as well as of a filamentous green alga (Klebsormidium sp.). From the obtained data, we created mathematical models describing the light color dependence of photosynthetic functions and nutrient circling. We have published our results in high-rank scientific journals: up to date 12 of our scientific papers have been published or accepted with the financial support of the project.
