Severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques such as surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) and high pressure torsion (HPT) can induce surface nanocrystallization and/or mechanochemical reactions. In a recent comprehensive study we revealed that beyond its conventional application, HPT is capable to create not just nanostructures, but even an amorphous structure if it is applied to an excellent potential glassformer, i.e. Cu60Zr02Ti20. The main goal of this project is the production of (Cu-, Mg- and Al-based) bulk amorphous materials with high glass forming ability and high stability by SMAT and HPT, which has never done before by any research group. The final microstructure of the SMAT alloys depends on several parameters, Microstructural characterization by X-ray diffraction, optical, transmission and scanning electron microscopy will be carried out. The compositional changes perpendicular to the top surface of the SMAT speciment and HPT disc are studied by energy dispersive X-ray analysis.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
A pályázat keretében a nagy plasztikus deformáción alapuló felületkezelés (SMAT), ill. nagynyomású csavarás (HPT) hatására kialakuló (részleges) szilárdfázisú amorfizáció jelenségét vizsgáltam.
In the present project the effect of surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) and high pressure torsion (HPT) on the (partial) solid state amorphization was studied. It was shown by synchrotron measurements, conventional X-ray diffraction and microscopic studies that milling the mixture of Zr and Ti powders near a Cu target provides a homogeneous coating exhibiting enhanced mechanical properties which may lead to industrial applications. Due to the extreme deformation of HPT, some regions of the binary crystalline Cu-Zr system transform in to amorphous. It is well known that the synthesis of Al-based bulk amorphous alloys is strongly restricted. As a new method of compaction, we have shown that HPT of rapidly quenched amorphous Al-Ce-Ni-Co, Al-Gd-Ni-Co and Al-Y-Ni-Co can successfully be applied.
