magyar összefoglaló
A fő témák a következőek:

I. Keveredés, reakciók, ülepedés és koaguláció. Időfüggő áramkásokban vizsgáljuk a biológiai egyedek versengését (mint egyfajta reakciót), a plankton populációk süllyedését, és a fragmentálódó és koaguláló nehéz részecskék mozgását. Az utóbbi a felhőképződés fontos eleme.

II. Rétegzett és forgatott közegek áramlásának kisérleti vizsgálata. Több kisérletet kivánunk végezni, melyek az óceáni és a légköri transzporttal kapcsolatosak, kis vagy nagy skálákon. Kiemelt figyelmet szentelünk a termohalin cirkulációnak, ill. a szennyezések közepes szélességeken történő szétterjedésének.

III. Éghajlati adatbankok statisztikus elemzése. A hőmérsékleti adatok korrelációs analizisét kivánjuk elvégezni különböző magasságokban, egészen a sztratoszféráig. Az Európára vonatkozó felszini széladatok alapján a szélerőműhálozatok optimális elhelyezkedési lehetőségét szeretnénk felderiteni.

IV. Hosszúidejű klimaváltozás: zaj és fizikai folyamatok. Az éghajlati adatatokban fellelhető erős korreláció alapján tervezzük a fluktuációk univerzláis vonásainak vizsgálatát. A kritikus jelenségek szemléletén alapuló elemzés a klimadinamika ujfajta megközelitését jelenti.

The basic topics are:

I. Mixing, reactions, sedimentation and coagulation. In time-dependent flows, the competition of biological species (as a kind of reaction), the sinking of plankton populations, and the coagulation and fragmentation dynamics of heavy particles will be studied. The latter is relevant element in cloud formation.

II. Experimental investigation of stratified and rotating flows. We intend to make several experiments related to small and large scale oceanic and atmospheric transport. Special emphasis will be put on the experimental investigation of the thermohaline circulation, and to the spreading of pollutants at mid latitudes.

III. Statistical analysis of climatological data banks. We intend to carry out a correlation analysis of temperature data at several altitudes up to the stratosphere. Using surface wind data over Europe, we try to identify an optimal network of wind turbines.

IV. Noise and physical processes underlying long-time climatic changes. Using the presence of strong correlations in climatological data we plan to search for universal aspects of the fluctuations. A physical analysis from the viewpoint of critical systems is expected to provide a new approach to climate dynamics.

The project is based on the participation of six senior scientists, augmented by 6-8 younger scientists (4 to be employed by the project). It might contribute to the growing up of a new generation of physicists knowledge well tuned to environmental issues. The results shall primarily appear as publications in international journals.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
A „Keveredés, reakciók, ülepedés és koaguláció” témakörben a szennyezések terjedésével foglalkoztunk. Az alkalmazások köre a felhőfizikától és a vulkáni hamu terjedésétől a algavirágzás dinamikáján keresztül a vérkeringésig és a tavakban megfigyelhető keveredési jelenségekig terjed. A „Rétegzett és forgatott közegek áramlásának kísérleti vizsgálata” az ELTE Kármán Laboratóriuma infrastrukturális hátterével vált lehetővé. Legújabb kísérleteinkkel a Nagy Óceáni Szállítószalag mélyvíz képződésért felelős helyeinek és a tenger alatti anomálisan forró pontoknak a kapcsolatát szeretnénk tisztázni.
Within the framework of subproject „Mixing, reactions, sedimentation and coagulation” we deal with the spreading of pollutants. Applications range from cloud microphysics and the outfall of volcanic ash, via plakton blooms, to blood circulation and mixing processes in lakes. The „Experimental investigation of flows in stratified and rotated fluids” became possible on the infrastructual background of the von Kármán Laboratory of Eötvös University. Our most recent efforts try to clarify the role of the observed coincidence of the deep water formation sites of the Great Oceanic Conveyor Belt with warm anomalies on the seafloor. Under the title „Statistical analyses of data banks, and renewable energies” our aim was to estimate the potential of renewable energy. We also analysed the sea surface temperature anomalies, called Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillations and came to the conclusion that they not neccessarily represent a stable oscillatory mode. With the investigation of „Long-term climate change and physical processes” we attampted to strengthen the use of physical arguments in climate dynamics research. One of our focuses was on extreme value statistics. A further aim of us was the estimation of the role of noise in climatic models, and the investigation of the reliability of such models.
