Összefoglalva, a kutatás alacsony dimenziójú mágneses rendszerek megértéséhez visz közelebb, mely reményeink szerint felhasználható új technológiák kifejlesztésében, elsősorban nagy-sűrűségű adattárolás területén.
angol összefoglaló
The proposed research aims at the theoretical investigation of electric transport properties of magnetic nanostructures from first principles in the framework of international cooperation. We treat electronic states at the level of density functional theory and we build linear response theory for electrical conductivity on this basis. We are focusing on supported magnetic clusters and atomic-sized contacts. Correspondingly, tunnelling and ballistic transport is considered and will be modelled by using the same level of methodology (of Landauer-Büttiker type) to be newly implemented into the “complex geometry” fully relativistic Screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (SKKR) program package employing a new, computationally efficient algorithm. By applying this method we aim to provide a theoretical basis and understanding for the possible extraction of information on magnetic order and magnetic interactions in nanostructures by electric current measurements. Additionally, by employing a Transfer Hamiltonian-based approach (BSKAN) a comparison between two different methods becomes possible in magnetic tunnel junctions, which is particularly of theoretical interest. In summary, the project tries to add to the understanding of magnetic systems with reduced dimensions, which could be applied in developing new technologies, in particular in the field of high-density data storage.

We performed theoretical investigation of magnetic nanostructures, particularly focusing on electron transport properties, in the framework of national and international collaborations. For this reason, we developed several novel theoretical and computational methods, serving as a base for future research activities. Applying the new methods, we investigated physical phenomena in the front line of basic research and technological developments. These topics include the magnetic properties of atomic-sized contacts, the theory of spin-polarized scanning tunnelling microscopy, and complex magnetic structures in ultrathin films. The obtained results are expected to be exploited in the development of new technologies, particularly in the field of high-density magnetic data storage. As a result of our project, we published 15 peer-reviewed journal articles to date, 9 of them in Physical Review B. The cumulative impact factor of the published papers is 49.3, and they attracted twenty independent citations till 24/07/2014. Further results of the project are the establishment of a number of national and international collaborations and its role in the talent management at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.
