This project is aimed at developing epoxy resin (EP) based shape memory polymer (SMP) systems with improved (e.g. stress recovery) and novel shape memory (memorizing two or more transient shapes). Improved stress recovery will be achieved by incorporation of nanoscaled multiwall carbon nanotubes with and without functionalizations (nanoadditive) and using traditional reinforcements (unidirectional aligned and woven structures from carbon fibers) in both dual and multiple shape memory systems. To produce triple and multiple shape polymer systems (polymers and related composites), the resin layering technique will be adapted. Layered structures (laminates) with the necessary interlayer adhesion (that will be tested accordingly) will be produced from EP-based systems with different network structures showing different glass transitions temperatures. The latter will serve as switching temperatures during programming of the transient shapes. The shape memory properties will be determined and quantified by state-of-art methods and techniques. The results (“know why and know how”) are expected to pave the route of the R&D on thermoset-based SMPs. Attempts will be made to find straightforward applications for the new SMP systems.

Epoxy (EP) resin-based polymeric systems and related composites have been prepared and tested for their shape memory performance (shape fixing, shape recovery, recovery rate, recovery stress). In case of the systems, memorizing one temporary shape, emphasis was put on enhancing the measurable recovery stress. It was found that this task can be reached by using traditional textile reinforcements (composed of carbon, glass and natural fibers) provided that the EP is highly crosslinked and the reinforcing layers are subjected to proper loadings. When temporary shape programming occurs above the glass transition temperature (Tg) of EP (traditional way) then the reinforcement should be under local tensile stress. By contrast, for shape programming below Tg the reinforcing layers should suffer local compression stress field. EP systems capable for memorizing two temporary shapes, were of bicontinuous structure composed of EP and polycaprolactone (PCL). Continuity of PCL was achieved either by incorporation of an electrostatically spun nanofiber mat or by curing-induced phase segregation (formation of a semi interpenetrating network). The shape memory behavior of both bicontinuous EP/PCL systems was comparable. Since the semi-IPN version can be easily set and it may work for self-healing, semi IPN structured EP-based systems may revolutionize the preparation of multifunctional EPs.
