magyar összefoglaló
Számos faj elterjedési határa torlódik össze a Kárpát-medence egyes területein, illetve gyakran közelrokon, allo- vagy parapatrikus fajok/alfajok elterjedési területei is itt érintkeznek egymással.
Napjaink paleoökológiai kutatásai ismételten bebizonyították a Kárpát-medence egyes területein érvényesülő “kettős refugium-hatást”, amely alkalmas lehetett a hideg, illetve ingadozó klímájú jégkorszaki fázisokban a “hátráló” áreaperemi (“rear edge”) populációk megőrzésére.
A halmozódó áreahatárokkal jellemezhető faunaelemek összehasonlító filogeográfiai elemzése.
 Második lépés: Azon allo- és parapatrikus fajpárok/fajcsoportok ún. koaleszcencia-idejének megállapítása, amelyeknek genetikailag eltérő populációi a Kárpát-medencébe különböző irányokból behatolva itt találkoznak és/vagy hibridizálódnak.
 Harmadik lépés: A vizsgált fajok elterjedés-történetében bekövetkezett “bottle-neck” és terjedési-elszaporodási időszakok meghatározása az őskörnyezeti viszonyok változásával kapcsolatban.
 Nagyedik lépés: A Kárpát-medencében elterjedési határukat elérő és/vagy hibridizációs övezeteket alkotó fajok várható/lehetséges reakcióinak prediktálása a különböző lehetséges klímaszcenáriók alapján. Melyek lesznek/lehetnek a perempopulációk túlélési esélyei a hagyományos, illetve intenzíven használt (modern) kultúrtájban.
A filogeográfiai elemzés szorosan kapcsolódik a populációk terjedésének ill. visszaszorulásának vizsgálatával, a terjedő és hátráló szegélyekre (leading edge vs. rear edge) jellemző populációgenetikai folyamatok problematikájával. Elméleti feltételezéseinket és modelljeinket a történeti és recens klímaváltozásokra vonatkozó adatok alapján teszteljük.
angol összefoglaló
Boundaries of geographical ranges are often packing in some parts of the Carpathian basin. Furthermore, ranges of allo/parapatric sister species/subspecies often overlap or contact here. Marginal populations of numerous species occur here in different dynamic states, like partly relict-like, retreating, partly expanding or even hybridising with parapatric sister taxa. As a consequence, we encounter here different phenomena connected with the edges of ranges which have conservation biological significance in a period of climatic change. We have selected different cases of range edges and marginal overlaps in different large taxonomical groups of animals: Orthoptera, Lepidoptera, Amphibia and Reptilia.
Recent palaeoecological surveys have demonstrated the “double refugial effect“ in some regions of the Carpathian basin which were suitable for conservation of “rear edge” populations during the cold climatic periods including the smaller climatic fluctuations within the major glacial cycles. We consider that we could identify as extra-Mediterranean refugia even those areas where “rear edge” populations could survive the LGM period.
Based on these general considerations a four-step research programme can be outlined:
 Step one: Palaeo-ecological reconstruction and modelling of LGM ranges of species which have recent range edges in the Carpathian basin. Comparative phylogeography of faunal types with packing edges of distribution.
 Step two: Reconstruction of the coalescence time in species with genetically divergent populations and/or “phylogeographic rendezvous” with or without hybridisation in the Carpathian basin.
 Step three: Reconstruction of bottleneck vs. population growth periods of these species in connection with the palaeo-environmental changes.
 Step four: Prediction of the possible reactions of species with range edges and/or hybrid zones in the Carpathian basin on climatic change scenarios. Which are the probable reactions of their marginal populations, and the chances for survival in a “traditional” vs “modern” cultural landscape?
Comparative aspects of phylogeographic patterns and processes will be elaborated connected with very recent developments concerning the nested structures within refugia (‘refugia within refugia’, micro-refugia) and extra-Mediterranean (cryptic northern ‘non-paradigmatic’) refugia. The phylogeographical analysis is intimately connected with the expansion and retreat of populations, with the problematic of leading edge vs. rear edge and with population genetic processes at the edges of geographical ranges. These theoretical considerations should be tested in connection with recent results of historical and recent climatic changes.

A Kárpát-medence kulcsszerepű volt a glaciális-interglaciális faunamozgásokban. Posztglaciálisan több irányból népesült be.
The Carpathian basin played a crucial role in the glacial-interglacial faunal movements. We demonstrated the „multipolar” postglacial re-population, the core areas and ways of population with multiple, molecular and morphometric methods, and with climatic niche modelling. More, mostly extra-Mediterranean and/or Carpathian core areas and multiple directions of re-colonisation was demonstrated in several groups. Other important biogeographical trait of this region is the packing of boundaries of ranges connected with different types of isolations. Some marginal populations proved to be genetically diverse. Essential differences were demonstrated in sympatric or parapatric sister species with different ecological niches and/or reproductive strategies. High/very high level of genetic variation was found in non-obligatory, but rather moderate in obligatorily myrmecophilous lycaenid species. Serious bottlenecks were observed in some declining populations. Evolutionarily and/or conservationarily significant units were discovered in more protected butterfly species which need more differentiated measurements in the practical nature conservation. We developed a new paradigm for the biogeographical consequences of the glacial/interglacial cycles, based on the individual climatic response of species, which should replace the earlier contraction-expansion model. We demonstrated that continental species display manifold patterns of Quaternary dynamics.
