The subject of the application is a broad research in the history of philosophy: it investigates the ancient philosophical traditions of theology from the Presocratics, through Plato and Aristotle, all the way to the Hellenistic schools, taking its cue from Cicero’s De Natura Deorum. Such a study is very timely for many reasons: on the one hand, there has not been a methodically thorough, philosophical study of the above mentioned work by Cicero, which also integrates the results of the modern literature, partially because Cicero, the philosopher, is just being discovered. On the other hand, such a work can be done only if it takes up the task of itself being a monograph on the history of the traditions of theology in ancient philosophy, one which based on Cicero's this particular work has not been written. The chosen methodology will lead to new knowledge concerning both, Cicero’s philosophical work and the traditions of ancient theology. The fruits of this research will be a series of articles - three in Hungarian and three in English - publishing the findings of the research and a book in English, which I propose to write by the end of the research period. Furthermore, during the research I wish to set up a think tank to draw attention to the relation between modern theological debates and their ancient traditions, which would include separate research groups in the form of seminars for the different periods or schools addressed in Cicero’s work, led by me and my colleagues.
