Summary in Hungarian
A projekt célja négy olyan problémakör vizsgálata DEM segítségével, amelyekre a falazott szerkezetek klasszikus eljárásai nem alkalmazhatók:
1. Többnyílású ívhidak
Célunk az ívek egymásrahatásának elemzése, az együttes térbeli mechanikai viselkedés megértése, emellett különféle megerősítési technikák hatásának DEM szimulációk alapján való vizsgálata.
2. Támaszmozgások hatása boltozatokra: Mely repedések veszélyesek?
A falazott szerkezetekben a kapcsolatok támaszmozgások esetén megnyílhatnak, ami a belső erők átrendeződését eredményezi. Különféle boltozatok támaszmozgásainak szimulálásával szeretnénk felmérni, milyen repedésrendszerek tekinthetők veszélytelennek, és melyek azok, amelyek a teherbírásvesztés közeledtére figyelmeztetnek.
3. Nagysebességű becsapódások hatása boltozatokra
A szokásos összeomlási módokon kívül a becsapódások lokális tönkremenetelt és megcsúszásokat is okozhatnak, olyankor is, ha a boltozatot energiaelnyelő szemcsehalmaz védi. Célunk a tönkremeneteli módok feltérképezése és annak elemzése, hogy többrétegű kialakítással javítható-e a boltozatok ellenállása.
4. Vasalással erősített falak és kémények
A falak és kémények nyírási ellenállása és talajmozgásokkal szembeni ellenállóképessége jelentősen javítható vasalással és megfelelő téglakötések alkalmazásával. DEM szimulációkban kipróbálva számos geometriai elrendezést, célunk optimális konstrukciókat találni.
Summary
Using the Discrete Element Method, in our project we plan to analyse four problems for which the classical methods of masonry analysis are inapplicable:

1. The Multispan Effect
Our aim is to understand the 3D mechanical behaviour of multispan bridges, with a focus on how neighbouring arches contribute to each other’s load bearing. We also plan to simulate the effect of different repair and strengthening techniques.

2. Support displacements under different types of vaults: Which cracks matter?
Masonry structures are sensitive to support displacements: if cracks open, the distribution of compression forces between blocks has to alter. We plan to simulate a variety of support displacements for different domes and vaults, and analyze whether the appearing cracks warn on the danger of collapse.

3.: High velocity impacts on masonry vaults
In addition to usual failure mechanisms, individual blocks of a vault may slide or be broken when high velocity impacts act either directly, or on a protective granular layer. Our aim is to discover the different failure modes and analyze multi-ring constructions.

4: Reinforced masonry walls and chimneys
Resistance of everyday mortared masonry structures for shear loads and soil movements can significantly be improved with the help of properly placed reinforcements and with the suitable bond order of bricks. We plan to simulate different arrangements to find optimal geometrical constructions.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
A legfontosabb eredmények: - Ívhidak teherbírása növelhető, ha a híd ferdeségét növeljük, feltéve, hogy valamelyik fejlettebb konstrukciós technikával készült a híd. Téves tehát az a gyakorlatban jelenleg használatos eljárás, hogy a ferde híd teherbírását az azonos fesztávú egyenes híd teherbírási értékének csökkentésével becsülik. - Heyman "Safe Theorem"-je, amelyet a gyakorlatban általánosan elterjedten alkalmaznak falazott szerkezetek állékonyságának ellenőrzésére, egyes esetekben a biztonság kárára téved. A tételnek két korrigált változatát adtuk meg. - Ovális boltozatokra olyan diagramokat készítettünk a gyakorló mérnökök számára, amelyek segítségével egy konkrét vizsgált boltozatnak megállapítható az ún. geometriai biztonsági tényezője. - Csúcsíves dongaboltozatokat vizsgálva, a szabályos háromszögre szerkesztett csúcsívhez igen közeli alak bizonyult optimálisnak önsúlyteher esetére. Ez a felismerés egyfajta lehetséges magyarázat arra, miért vált a gótikában annyira elterjedtté a szabályos háromszögre szerkesztett csúcsív. - Bordás és borda nélküli keresztboltoztok viselkedését összehasonlítva kvázistatikus támaszmozgások és -rezgések (pl. földrengés) esetén, kiderült, hogy a bordás változat (melynek teherbírása és merevsége nagyobb) kedvezőtlenebbül viselkedik: nagyobb repedésekkel és lokális sérülésekkel kénytelen alkalmazkodni a támaszmozgások miatt módosuló geometriához, mint a borda nélküli szerkezetek.
Results in English
The most important results: - Skew arches of helicoidal and logarithmic construction have higher resistance to static loads than the corresponding straight arch. The engineering practice to calculate the load bearing of a skew arch by decreasing the load bearing of the corresponding straight arch with a chosen factor is not appropriate. - Heyman's Safe Theorem may erroneously declare unsafe structures to be safe. Two corrected versions of the theorem were formulated. - For oval domes, diagrams were prepared for the practicing engineers to appraise the geometrical factor of safety of an analysed dome. - Pointed arches have their optimal shape for selfweight near to the arc drawn on the equilateral triangle. It offers a possible mechanical explanation why arcs drawn on the equilateral triangle became so general in the Gothic. - Ribbed and unribbed cross vaults were compared under quasi-static support displacements as well as support vibrations. The ribs played a rather negative role: ribbed vaults had to be damaged more seriously in order to accomodate to the changes of geometry than the unribbed vaults.
