magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A pályázatban vázolt munka célja az egykor nedves marsfelszíni környezetekben előforduló folyékony víz jellemzőinek jobb megértése. Ehhez a Marssal kapcsolatban elérhető adatállományok mellett földi analógiák is felhasználásra kerülnek, főleg hazai kutatási eredmények közül.

A kutatómunka fő céljai:
1. egykori vizes környezetek paramétereinek meghatározása:
-- vízhozam, jellemző folyadékmennyiség térfogata, nedves időszak tartama,
-- korreláció a fenti paraméterek és a színképi úton azonosított vizes mállással keletkezett ásványok között,
-- sóoldatok keletkezési lehetőségének elemzése a múltban,
-- őskörnyezeti körülmények becslése (hőmérséklet, pH és sótartalom intervallumok), rekonstrukciót segítő morfológiai, üledékes és kémiai indikátorok pontosabb megismerése,
2. földtudományi és planetológiai területek kapcsolatának fejlesztése:
-- antropogén és biogén tevékenység hiányának felhasználása a Marson a folyóvízi felszínformálás fizikai hátterének jobb megértésére
-- Föld és Mars fejlődéstörténetének közös rendszer szerinti értelmezése,
-- Csillagászati és Földtudományi Kutatóközponton (MTA-CSFK) belüli kooperáció elősegítése.

A konkrét tudományos célokon túl a pályázatban vázolt munka segít kiaknázni az MTA-CSFK lehetőségeit és egy korábbi OTKA kutatás eredményeit, azokat „planetáris összefüggésekbe” helyezve. A projekt ahhoz is hátteret biztosít, hogy a magyar kutatók könnyebben részt vehessenek jövőbeli bolygótudományi programokban, és hogy több kapcsolódó tudásanyag áramoljon hazánkba.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A kutatás alapkérdései a víznek a Mars felszínformálásában betöltött szerepét segítenek jobban megérteni, emellett közreműködnek a vizes mállások ásványi átalakulásainak, valamint a folyók hordalékszállításának általános megértésében a Föld-típusú bolygókon.

- Melyek azok a témakörök, ahol a bolygótudományi kutatások beilleszthetőek a hazai „klasszikus” földtudományi vizsgálatok közé, hogy hozzájárulhasson Magyarország a nemzetközi bolygótudományi kutatómunkához?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A pályázott témakör ilyen tudás Magyarországi meghonosításában segít,
- új technológia: a kutatóprogram erősíti a kapcsolatot az új űrtudományi alkalmazások felé (detektorok, hiperspektrális adatok, komplex térinformatikai módszerek),
- akadémiai szint: a pályázat keretében megvalósuló interdiszciplináris témakörök segítenek a Csillagászati és Földtudományi Kutatóközpontban zajló munka elmélyítésében.

Társadalmi hasznosulás:
- a kutatómunka nemzetközi kapcsolatok kialakításában működik közre, és olyan űrtudományi programokban segítheti hazánk részvételét, amelyek értékes ismereteket hoznak Magyarországra,
- a kutatómunka szélesebb hátteret biztosít a természettudományos kutatás fontosságának bemutatására Magyarországon. A kutatómunkával kapcsolatos eredmények az egyetemi oktatásba integrálhatóak, ami egy népszerű témakörrel segíti a tanulók érdeklődését a természettudományok felé fordítani.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

This proposal is aimed at to better understand the past existence and characteristics of liquid water and wet environments on Mars. To achieve the aims, beyond the space based datasets, analog knowledge from the Earth, especially from other Hungarian researchers will be utilized.

Key goals of this proposal:
1. calculate the parameters and characteristics of past wet environments on Mars, including:
-- discharge, volume, duration of wet periods,
-- correlate the above mentioned parameters to spectrally identified mineral signatures of wet alteration produced minerals,
-- identify the possible role of brine formation in the past,
-- estimate paleo-environmental conditions (temperature regime, pH and salinity range) and identify morphological, sedimentary, chemical markers for such research,
2. exploit the connections between Earth and planetary science:
-- using the lack of anthropogenic influence on Mars to improve the understanding of the physical background of fluvial systems
-- interpret the information from the two planets under the same context,
-- improve the cooperation between the member institutes of the Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences (MTA-CSFK)

Beyond achieving new results, the project also helps to exploit deeper the potential of research work at the MTA-CSFK and an earlier OTKA project, putting them into “planetary context”. The project provides background for Hungarian scientists to contribute in future planetary science projects, and bring related specific know-how to Hungary.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The research questions are aimed at the better understanding of the role of water in the surface evolution of Mars, and also to improve our understanding on the water related mineral alteration and sedimentary transport rate on Earth-like planets in general. The basic questions are classified into 3 specific and 1 general groups:

- How long was there liquid water on Mars in the analyzed ancient channels and lakes, and what was the rough volume of the involved water there? Regarding the past conditions what could be estimated for the temperature, pH, salinity range and mineral alterations there?
- What are the spatial and temporal characteristics of the ancient wet environment types on Mars? Are there general trends and if yes how could be this implemented into the general knowledge on the planetary evolution? And how could this help in the targeting of future missions and research work?
- What are the similarities / differences in the connections between morphometic parameters and characteristics of water in the case of meanders, cross-sectional profiles, discharges, transport and sedimentary deposits, on Earth versus Mars?
- What are those fields where planetary science could be integrated into “classical” Earth science research in Hungary? Where could Hungary contribute in the international research work in planetary science?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

This proposal opens the following new fields in basic research and helps in the cooperation between different topics and institutes:

Distinct new methods will arise using the overlapping fields between “classical” Earth science and new planetary science, including:
- fluvial channel curvature-discharge connection - to better understand the physical basis (for example role of gravity) in the discharge computation,
- comparing channel and valley cross-sectional profiles on Earth and Mars - to help to separate antropogenic effects, and straighten the physical reasons for certain characteristics,
- the analysis provides examples how the temporal parameters of wet environemnts could be connected to the mineral alterations there,
- identification of possible climate related zonal distribution and other past wet environments on Mars - to improve the climate reconstruction methods.

General results:
- new know-how: The growing data and widening cooperation in western Europe provide examples how existing data could be exploited deeper fusing Earth and planetary science. The project helps to bring such know-how in Hungary,
- new technology: The project straighten the connections toward new space related technology (detectors, hyperspectral data, GIS based complex analysis),
- academic level: The Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences receives new interdisciplinary connections that helps to exploit their work.

Benefits for society:
- this project helps the establishment of international connections and the participation in space related research that brings new knowhow to Hungary on advanced remote sensing technology,
- this project provides a wider context to present the necessity of research in natural sciences in Hungary. The integration of the results from this proposal into the education at University level helps to orient students toward the natural science disciplines with a popular topic.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Various recent data on morphology, mineralogy and lithology show liquid water was present on early Mars. Despite the great sum of information, our knowledge is weak regarding the past duration of these wet periods, their spatial, volumetric and chemical characteristics. This project is aimed at partly to analyze spacecraft data in order to identify numerical parameters (including discharge, duration, temperature, pH and salinity range at previously wet locations), and also to characterize these ancient wet environments in gereal, to reconstruct the paleo-environmental conditions there. Such information improves our understanding on the planetary evolution and past climates of Mars in general.

To exploit the most of the Hungarian Earth science research community, this project is also aimed at to fuse the “classical” knowledge from geography and geology with planetary science. There are several important topics (paleo-climate indicator properties of landforms, connections between fluvial meander parameters and discharge, sedimentary transport mechanism and sedimentary units, river cross-sectional profiles and erosion/deposition mass balance) where the connection between the classical Earth science knowledge and information from other planetary bodies are not exploited deeply yet. The methods used in this proposal give a wider context, where various Earth science related knowledge could be applied in the new fields of planetary science and vice versa.

During the research work morphological and morphometrical groups of ancient fluvial valleys were separated on Mars, which point to that the spatial and temporal occurrence of liquid water became more concentrated during the planetary evolution. The active periods of these fluvial systems were relatively short, ranged between weeks, years and hundred years – although these total durations might come from several shorter, separated active cycles. Ideal locations and periods were identified at the northern circumpolar region where (similarly to the southern hemisphere) microscopic liquid water could be present ephemerally, which might even contribute in the decomposition of aggressive hydrogen-peroxide there. Analyzing Earth analogues, tectonically influenced fluvial valleys were identified and surveyed on Mars. Using these long faults, improved age estimation could be made for certain fluvial valleys, suggesting an active period not earlier than 3.8-3.6 billion years. Using Earth analogues predictions and related mission scenarios were developed to support the targeting and interpretation of ExoMars rover’s drills to identify ancient wet conditions from drilled sedimentary samples in the future.
