magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A tervezett kutatás során különböző genotípusú nyúlállományok (Pannon fehér, Pannon ka, Pannon apai vonal) kvantitatív genetikai elemzését fogjuk végezni. A projekt fő célkitűzése a genetikai paraméterek (additív, nem additív) becslése, beltenyésztési leromlás és tenyészérték stabilitás becslése szaporasági (élve született fiókák száma, holtan született fiókák száma, összesen született fiókák száma, 21 napos alomtömeg), növekedési (5 és 10 hetes kor közti napi átlagos súlygyarapodás) és vágási (CT-vel mért combizom-térfogat, combizom-tömeg, vágási kitermelés, vesekörüli zsír tömege, intramuszkuláris zsír tömege, a vágott test hátulsó részének aránya a referencia karkaszhoz viszonyítva) tulajdonságokra. Az elemzésekhez különböző egyedmodelleket alkalmazunk.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A fentieken kívül a beltenyésztési leromlás a értékmérők teljesítménycsökkenését okozhatja, különösen a multipara fajok esetében.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A beltenyésztési leromlás nagyságát szintén meghatározzuk a vizsgált tulajdonságokra nézve. A beltenyésztés együtthatók modellből történő elhagyásának következményeit szintén meghatározzuk. Ehhez hasonló módon a dominanciahatások modellből történő elhagyása torzított varianciakomponenseket, illetve tenyészértékeket eredményezhet. A lehetséges torzítást nagysága kifejezhető oly módon, hogy meghatározzuk a tenyészértékek stabilitását valamennyi egyedre, illetve a rangsort vezető egyedek adott hányadára.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A tervezett kutatás során különböző genotípusú nyúlállományok (Pannon fehér, Pannon ka, Pannon apai vonal) kvantitatív genetikai elemzését fogjuk végezni. A beltenyésztési leromlás nagyságát valamennyi vizsgált tulajdonságra becsüljük. A rendelkezésre álló szaporasági, növekedési és vágási tulajdonságokat egyre összetettebb modellekkel értékeljük, így a “túl egyszerű” modellek alkalmazásának hatása is elbírálható.
angol összefoglaló
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

In the course of this project three populations of different rabbit genotypes (Pannon White breed, Pannon Ka (maternal line) and Pannon Terminal line) will be analyzed from quantitative genetic aspects. The main objective of this study is to estimate genetic parameters (additive genetic effects, dominance effects), inbreeding depression and breeding value stability for the available reproductive (number of kits born alive, number of kits born dead, total number of born kits and litter weight at day 21), growth (average daily gain between the ages of 5 and 10 weeks) and slaughter (thigh muscle volume, thigh muscle weight, dressing out percentage, perirenal fat weight, intramuscular fat weight and ratio of the hind part of the carcass) traits using different animal models.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

In animal breeding the estimation of genetic parameters is focused mainly on additive genetic effects as they predominantly affect genetic progress. On the other side, in addition to additive variance, genetic variance of a quantitative trait is also determined by dominance and epistatic variance. Ignoring existing dominance variance may lead to biased estimates of variance components and breeding values. Besides, inbreeding depression, known as the reduction of the population mean for a quantitative trait such as size, fertility and vigour, is a phenomenon widely observed in numerous animal species, particularly those with large litter size. Theoretically, the presence of dominance effects, partial and complete dominance or overdominance, is required for the manifestation of inbreeding depression. The key question of this project is if the magnitude of non-additive genetic component is large enough for the different traits to cause imprecise genetic parameters and breeding values if neglected from the genetic evaluation.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The main results of the project will be the genetic parameters (additive and non-additive) of the reproductive, growth and carcass traits of rabbit genotypes with different breeding objectives. The magnitude of the dominance effects (given as the proportion of the phenotypic variance of the analyzed trait) is a complete novelty that has not been published in the field of rabbit breeding. In addition, consideration of dominance effects can be utilised through planned mate allocation. As dominance variance is often confounded with other genetic effects and/or environmental effects (eg. additive genetic effects, common litter, and permanent environmental effects) the magnitude of this confounding effect can also be determined applying the different models with or without the non-additive genetic effects. Inbreeding depression, known as the reduction of the population mean for a quantitative trait will be also determined for the analyzed traits. Moreover effects of omitting inbreeding from the models will also determined both on the genetic parameters and on the breeding values. Similarly, ignoring existing dominance variance may lead to biased estimates of variance components and breeding values. The magnitude of this possible bias will also be characterized by determining the stability of the breeding values of all or that of the top ranked rabbits.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

In the course of this project three populations of different rabbit genotypes (Pannon White breed, Pannon Ka (maternal line) and Pannon Terminal line) will be analyzed from quantitative genetic aspects. The main objective of this study is to estimate the heritability of the different traits which parameter is indispensable to predict the annual progress of the trait. Besides heritability the magnitude of the dominance effects will also be estimated (caused by the intra locus interaction of the alleles). In practical rabbit breeding often the most valuable animals (from a given aspects) are relatives. When however relatives are mated the progeny will be inbred and may show reduction in performance (inbreeding depression). Inbreeding depression will also be estimated for all analyzed traits. The available reproductive, growth and slaughter traits will be evaluated with different models with increasing complexity thus the effects of applying “too simple models” can also be determined.

In the course of the project genetic evaluation of the three rabbit breeds (Pannon White, Pannon Ka and Pannon Large) developed at the experimental rabbit farm of the Kaposvár University was performed for reproductive, growth and carcass traits using additive and dominance models. Magnitude of the dominance effects was substantial for the reproductive and growth traits. Applying the additive and dominance models the ranks of the rabbits based on the predicted breeding values showed high concordance however, some re-ranking was observed for the top ranked animals. Substantial re-ranking among the top ranked animals was detected when two-trait models were used. The relative importance of the dominance effects was negligible for the carcass traits. Altogether it can be concluded that including the dominance effects in the genetic evaluation of the reproductive and growth traits of the analysed rabbit breeds was justified because of the increased precision of the predicted breeding values.
