magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A jövőbeni nanelektronikai alkalmazásokban a következő új anyagok játszhatnak alapvető szerepet:
i) szén és szilícium alapú nanoszerkezetek, ii) átmenetifém-kalkogenidek, iii) általánosított Dirac-modell, iv) topologikus szigetelők.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A tervezett munkánk során új atomi vékony anyagok - szén és szilícium alapú nanoszerkezetek, átmenetifém-kalkogenidek, általánosított Dirac-modell, topologikus szigetelők - elektronikus és optikai tulajdonságait fogjuk vizsgálni. Az alábbi problémákkal kívánunk foglalkozni:

Szeretnénk elérni a GW közelítés pontosságát kevésbé számításigényes sűrűségfunkcionál-elmélet alapú számolásokban.

Tanulmányozni fogjuk a minta felületén lévő mágneses szennyezők azonosítását a lokális állapot-sűrűség oszcillációinak a vizsgálatával, ami közvetlenül mérhető a pásztázó alagútmikroszkóppal.

Topologikus rácshibák, korrelált szennyezők és topologikus szigetelők felületi állapotainak alapvető lineáris válaszfüggvényeit fogjuk vizsgálni
nem kölcsönható rendszerek időfüggő korrelációs függvényeinek segítségével.

Különböző, hatékony numerikus módszereket fogunk használni a fény-anyag kölcsönhatás és a rendezetlenség vizsgálatára az alacsonydimenziós szén nanoszerkezetekben.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A szilícium alapú csip-technológia kezdi elérni a határait, ezért újszerű egzotikus állapotokkal rendelkező anyagok kerültek a kondenzált anyagok kutatásának érdeklődési körébe.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A szilícium alapú csip-technológia kezdi elérni a határait, ezért folytatódik új anyagok felkutatása. A legmegfelelőbbnek a szén alapú anyagok, mint a grafén (az egyetlen atom vastagságú grafitréteg), a nanocsövek (a feltekert grafén), a szilicén (szilícium alapú anyagok), a különféle atomi vékony anyagok, valamint az egzotikus felületi állapotokkal rendelkező topologikus szigetelők tűnnek.

A tíz nm-es méretnél kisebb elektronikában a kvantummechanika érvényes. Emiatt fontos az ilyen méretű rendszerek elektronikus tulajdonságainak alapvető megismerése. Ezenfelül a szén-alapú anyagok olyan figyelemreméltó optikai tulajdonságokkal rendelkeznek, amik lehetővé teszik optikai szenzorként történő alkalmazásukat.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The following new materials may play essential role in future nanoelectronic applications: i) carbon and silicon based nanostructures, ii) transition metal dichalcogenides, iii) generalized Dirac models, iv) topological insulators.
The aim of this proposal is to generate fundamental understanding of these novel, atomically thin nanostructures.
The band structure topology are closely related to the measured electronic conductivity, and thus our aim is to explore this intimate link in a more theoretical manner.
The dynamics of electrons and basic properties of such systems will be calculated using ab initio and tight binding approximations.
Our objectives are to study the electronic, transport, and optical properties and the effects of lattice defects and disorder on linear response functions of the above mentioned atomically thin nanostructures.

Our results will be published in leading international journals of the field, and will be presented in conferences and workshops. We expect our work to initiate new directions in experimental research and engineering. The expertise of the participants and their national and international collaborators guarantees the success of this project.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

In this proposal we will study the electronic and optical properties of novel materials such as carbon and silicon based nanostructures, transition metal dichalcogenides, generalized Dirac models and topological insulators.

The key questions addressed in this proposal are as follows.

Our goal is to reach the accuracy of the GW approximation in a computationally less demanding density functional theory calculation. We will parametrize and use hybrid functionals for band structure calculations.
We will calculate the conductivity for the above mentioned atomically thin structures as a function of Fermi energy and explore the intimate link between band structure topology and conductivity.
Our goal is to implement a special and effective algorithm that is capable to predict linear response functions and calculate the optical conductivity of atomically thin materials.
Our aim is to investigate the electron focusing effect of the electron dynamics related to the strain controlled valley-dependent interference pattern.
We will examine the possibility to identify magnetic impurities on the surface of the sample by analyzing the oscillation of the local density of states directly measurable by scanning tunnelling microscopy.
The effect of the topological lattice defects, correlated impurities and surface states in topological insulators will be investigated using linear response theory based on real-time correlation functions.
Different and efficient numerical methods will be applied for addressing light-matter interaction and disorder in low dimensional carbon nanostructures.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The silicon-based chip technology is reaching its limitations. Therefore, novel materials with exotic states are in the front line of research in condensed matter physics.
Our complex approach to nanoscale systems will represent a major step towards the realisation of future scalable nanotechnologies and processes. In the longer term, the insights gained will contribute to the fabrication of novel functional nanoscale architectures and their integration into a higher hierarchical level.
Therefore, our research will focus on various atomically thin materials including carbon and silicon based nanostructures, transition metal dichalcogenides, generalized Dirac models and topological insulators. Our aim is to calculate the band structures of these materials and from this knowledge, using linear response theory, we will study various measurable physical quantities such as electron and optical conductivity and interface scattering.
Such work is not yet completed in the literature and several questions, e.g., the role of the disorder and defects are still open.

The study of the topological insulators is motivated by the fact that similarly to quantum Hall effect the topological insulators allow us to measure fundamental physical constants in high precision. Thus, these materials may play significant role both in fundamental research and applications.

The fundamental nature of such topics means that the proposed research will impact on a range of disciplines, including quantum chemistry, nano-engineering and condensed matter science. The skill and knowledge of the participants of this proposal guarantees that the results will be significant in this research field.

The participants have already considerable number of relevant publications in works related to carbon based materials. Furthermore, we have very good collaborations with prominent international researchers. According to our previous practice we put an emphasis on involving talented graduate and PhD students to work on tasks related to our proposal.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The silicon-based chip technology is reaching its limitations. Thus, there is an ongoing hunt for new materials.
Carbon-based materials such as graphene (single atom thin layer of graphite), nanotubes (rolled-up graphene), silicene (silicon-based materials), various atomically thin materials and topological insulators with exotic surface states are among the strong candidates.

The sub-10nm electronics is governed by quantum mechanics. Therefore, it is important to expand our fundamental knowledge about electronic properties of such systems on this scale. Moreover, the carbon based materials exhibit stunning optical properties that can be utilized for various applications such as optical sensors.

The resistivity and optical properties of such systems will be calculated with sophisticated methods developed by our group.
Even with the most careful production of these materials, defects and disorder is inevitably present in all nanodevices. Thus, it is essential to consider the effect of defects and disorder on various properties. We address this question by developing different theoretical and numerical methods and we will apply them to different atomically thin nanostructures.

Our results will be published in leading international journals of this field, and will be presented in conferences and/or workshops. We expect our work to initiate new directions in experimental research and engineering. We have well-established national and international collaborations that guarantee the success of the project.

kutatási eredmények (magyarul)
We have investigated the properties of topological and strongly correlated phases of matter under various circumstances. We have demonstrated that one can use non-equilibrium dynamics and correlations for manipulating and modifying the topological and other properties of quantum phases. We had a fruitful collaboration with experimentalists investigating transport properties of novel materials. We explored how topological phases and magnetic textures can be understood and exploited for future applications. We developed advanced algorithms to tackle important challenges of nanoelectronics and nanomagnetism. We studied the surface states of topological insulators using the multiple scattering theory. In addition, we developed a numerical approach to calculate the equilibrium Josephson current. Using our approach we examined the magnetic oscillations of the critical current in long Josephson junctions and the Fabry-P'erot-like oscillations in graphene based Josephson junctions. We derived simple models fitted to the results of high-level quantum chemical computations to describe electronic and optical properties of various 2D materials, such as graphene, boron-nitride, etc. We develop a general method to calculate the optical rotation of the polarization of light incident on multilayer dielectric consisting of atomically thin conductors. We performed various investigations on the unusual, multifractal nature of electronic states at or near quantum criticality.
Munkánk során a topologikus szigetelők felületi állapotait tanulmányoztuk a többszörös szórási elmélet segítségével.
