A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Fontos része a projektnek a COST ES 1006 „Veszélyes légszennyező anyagok épített környezetben való, lokális skálájú terjedésének előrejelzését és a válaszadást segítő eszközök fejlesztése, értékelése” nevű programhoz való hozzájárulás. A numerikus módszerek érzékenységét fogjuk vizsgálni, és az OpenFOAM nyílt forráskódú áramlástani kód segítségével numerikus bizonytalanségbecslést végzünk a városi akadályokat is részletesen felbontó számításokhoz. Ezen kívül új, jó minőségű szélcsatornamérési adatbázisok létrehozásával is hozzájárulunk a Hamburgi Egyetem Környezeti Szélcsatorna Laboratóriumának eddigi méréseihez.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A numerikus áramlástani modellek városi használatával kapcsolatos megválaszolandó kérdések:
Mennyire megbízhatóak a használt numeriksu áramlástani szoftverek?

Hogyan befolyásolja a magas épület körüli áramlást a városi hősziget? Hogyan hat egy magas épület a környezetében lévő városi környezet koncentráció és áramlási viszonyaira?

A városi terek szintén kiemelt figyelmet érdemelnek, mivel sokan látogatják őket és fontos szerepük van a városi életben:
Hogyan hat a környező utcák nagy forgalma a tér légszennyezettségére?
Milyen a levegőminőség a téren összehasonlítva olyan területekkel ahol nincsenek terek?
Vannak-e távoltéri hatások?

Építési rendeletek gyakran átformálnak egy városi területet, például régi épületek helyére park vagy magas épületek kerülnek. A kérdés:

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A COST ES 1006 program eredményeként várhatóan a veszélyes anyagok levegőbe kerülését követő modellezésben is haszálhatóak lesznek összetettebb numerikus ármlástani modellek. Új validációs adatbázisok segítenek majd a modellek bizonytalanságát becsülni, és rávilágítanak a leginkább fejlesztésre szoruló területekre. A program magyar résztvevőiként felvesszük a kapcsolatot a magyar katasztrófavédelmi hatóságokkal, hogy megismerjük az igényeiket és tájékoztassuk őket a veszélyes anyagok terjedésmodellezésében felmerülő új lehetőségekről.

A felújított szélcsatorna egy kellően hosszú határréteg előkészítő szakasszal képes lesz homogén határréteg létrehozására, lehetővé téve kiemelkedő minőségű méréseket városi elrendezések közel és távoltéri hatásáról, illetve más környezeti és épületaerodinamikai problémákról, mint például összetett domborzat feletti terjedés, stb. A (Magyarországon egyedülálló) kutatási infrastruktúra rendelkezésre áll majd kormányzati szervek, helyi önkormányzatok és építési vállalatok számára.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A vizsgálat kiterjed a városi hősziget jelenség okozta enyhe szellők esetén kialakuló áramlásra is, amely a városok átszellőzése szempontjából különösen fontos.

A kutatás másik célja a fent említett áramlástani numerikus szimulációs modellek alkalmazásának vizsgálata baleseti szennyező kibocsátások modellezésére, akár a helyszínen intézkedő operatív katasztrófavédelmi személyzet döntéstámogatására (tablet számítógépen). A COST ES1006 EU-s finanszírozású nemzetközi kutatási program résztvevőiként hozzájárulunk az ilyen célra alkalmazott eszközök fejlődéséhez, megbízhatóságuk növeléséhez. A magyar katasztrófavédelmi szervekkel kapcsolatba lépünk, igényeiket felmérjük, és az új generációs eszközök nyújtotta lehetőségeket bemutatjuk.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The proposed OTKA project is based on the participating researchers' background in environmental building aerodynamics and experience in both experimental (wind tunnel) and numerical (CFD – Computational Fluid Dynamics) tools. The aim is both to improve these modelling methods and to answer practical questions regarding the influence of building clusters, tall buildings, and urban squares on ventilation and air quality, as well as the application of these methods in emergency response tools for dispersion modelling of hazardous (CBRN) releases.

CFD modelling methods in environmental flow and dispersion still need validation and calibration. For this purpose, physical modelling in wind tunnels is a suitable method. An untended boundary-layer wind tunnel will be refurbished and upgraded. It is intended to investigate far-field effects of building clusters to quantify their influence on urban climate. To investigate flow field in urban heat island induced flows, CFD modelling for stratified flows and measurements on small scale models in a heated tunnel are planned.

An important part of the proposed project is to contribute to the aims COST Action ES1006 titled “Evaluation, improvement and guidance for the use of local-scale emergency prediction and response tools for airborne hazards in built environments”. In this framework, we plan to evaluate the numerical sensitivity and estimate uncertainty of obstacle resolving urban flow and dispersion models with the OpenFOAM open source CFD code. We also will contribute to the generation of new, high-quality data sets from wind tunnel measurements of the Environmental Wind Tunnel Laboratory of the University of Hamburg.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The questions to be answered regarding the application of CFD tools in urban flow and dispersion modelling:
- How reliable are the CFD codes used?
- Is the use of more complicated dispersion models (e.g. anisotropic assumptions) confirmed by better results in near field dispersion scenarios?

We intend to investigate the effect of urban geometries on flow and dispersion, focusing on single tall buildings, which are typical in historic mid-European cities:
- How does the urban heat island affect the flow around a high-rise building? How does a high-rise building affect the concentration field and flow field in an idealized urban area?

Urban squares deserve also more interest, as they are highly frequented, and play an important role in city life:
- What is the effect of neighbouring streets with high traffic on air pollution of the square?
- How does air quality around the square compare to districts without squares?
- Are there any far-field effects?

Several times, building regulation changes the shape of an urban area completely. For example, old buildings are replaced by a park or tall buildings are erected instead. Question is:
- What is the impact of new urban developments on the air quality and wind comfort in a remote district of the city? Are there far-field effects? If yes, how can be these reduced?

In the application of dispersion modelling for emergency applications (Disaster managers, fire brigades)
- How can more sophisticated CFD model results be used for fast emergency response purposes?
- Which components have the largest impact on the quality of output (e.g. meteorological input, source term, flow model, dispersion model etc.)

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The project will result in more accurate tools for urban flow and dispersion modelling for both air quality and disaster management purposes.
In urban planning, considering just the near-field (short-range) influence of a new building project, is often misleading. Our measurements on the influence on selected building arrangements (squares, tall buildings) will help urban planners to quantify the influence of changes in urban morphology to the city as a whole. This will help to adjust urban planning measures (allowed maximum building height, maximal building density etc.) based on scientific evidence and not assumptions.

Especially, CFD and physical modelling of ventilation and air quality past buildings in calm wind conditions (country breeze) is expected to deliver scientific evidence on the existence of ventilation paths, channels in urban environment.

More sophisticated modelling in emergency response of hazardous material releases is expected to gain currency as a result of COST Action ES1006. New validation data sets will help to estimate the uncertainty of the models, and identify the most important fields to improve.
As Hungarian members of the Action, we will build up contact to the Hungarian disaster management authorities to survey their needs and advise them on new possibilities in dispersion modelling for hazardous material releases.

The upgraded wind tunnel with a sufficiently long boundary layer generation section will be able to generate a homogeneous boundary layer, allowing performing high quality measurements on the near- and far-field effects of urban setups, but also other environmental and building aerodynamic problems, like dispersion studies in complex terrain etc. This research infrastructure (unique in Hungary) will be available to government agencies, local governments, building construction companies.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The goal of the project is to model flow and dispersion in urban environment. With the improvement of the used Computational Fluid Dynamics programs and the reconstruction and modernization of the wind tunnel in which physical models can be investigated we can answer questions like what the air pollution pattern of a square is or how high-rise buildings affect air quality around them.

The investigation also considers the flow caused by gentle breezes of urban heat islands which is of high importance for the ventilation of whole cities.

Not only the effects in the neighbourhood of the buildings are interesting, but further effects which can change the whole urban climate. Larger scale reconstructions and investments' (housing estates, high-rise building districts, new parks) effects on urban climate can be quantified as a result of the investigations.

Another goal of the project is to investigate to feasibility of these models in emergency response modelling, helping the decisions of the disaster management and fire brigades even on site with tablet computers e.g. As members of the EU financed international research program COST ES 1006 we contribute to the development of these tools and their reliability. We get in touch with the disaster recovery organizations to asses their needs and keep them informed about the possibilities of the new generation tools.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
A projekt keretében elsősorban városi környezetben kialakuló áramlások és terjedési folyamatok numerikus szimulációs módszereit fejlesztettük tovább, és a szimulációk validációjára szolgáló szélcsatorna méréseket is végeztünk. A kifejlesztett hibrid ellenállás módszer segítségével gyorsabban, kisebb számítógép kapacitásigénnyel vizsgálhatóak egész városok áramlási viszonyai. A baleseti eredetű szennyezőanyag-terjedések előrejelzésére az eddigiekben használtnál pontosabb statisztikai módszert fejlesztettünk, amely a Magyarországon használt előrejelző rendszerben kerül majd felhasználásra. Nagyvárosok levegőminőség szempontjából optimális épületelrendezéseinek megtalálására kínál célszerű modellezési módszert a projekt támogatásával kifejlesztett ún. periodikus CFD modell. A COST ES 1006 nemzetközi kutatási akció aktív résztvevőiként, melynek célja baleseti szennyező-terjedés-előrejelző eszközök fejlesztése volt, hozzájárultunk az akció sikeréhez. Szélcsatornában és numerikus szimulációval városi terek átszellőzését elemeztük. A pályázat keretében a Kármán Tódor Szélcsatorna Laboratórium alkalmassá vált ipari balesetek, CBRN események során kibocsátásra került légszennyező anyagok instacionárius terjedésének modellkísérleti vizsgálatára. A pályázat 4 disszertáció, 9 impakt faktoros folyóiratcikk (összesített IF 12.26) és 14 konferenciacikk megírásához nyújtott támogatást.
Results in English
Modelling methods of flow and dispersion in urban areas have been enhanced or developed, and wind tunnel tests have been carried out to validate numerical simulations. The hybrid drag force approach aims to decrease computational demand and computational time of simulations involving the flow field in entire cities. A more accurate statistical pollutant prediction method has been developed for use in the existing operational emergency response system used for industrial accidents in Hungary. An effective method has been developed for finding optimum building patterns in cities via a new periodic CFD modelling method. As active members of the COST Action ES1006, aiming at the improvement of dispersion models in emergency response tools, we contributed to the success of the Action. We analyzed the ventilation of urban squares using wind tunnel tests and CFD simulations. With support of this project, Theodore von Kármán Wind Tunnel Laboratory became suitable to study unsteady pollutant dispersion processes (originated from e.g. industrial accidents or CBRN releases) on small scale wind tunnel models. The project resulted in the publication of nine IF journal papers (total IF: approx. 12.26) and contributed to the success of four PhD theses.
