magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kutatás a késő antik világ átalakulási időszakához köthető ötvöstevékenység hagyományait és szervezeti kereteit vizsgálja, közvetlen régészeti adatok hiányában indirekt módon, a kész termékek alapján.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A kutatás a korszak anyagi kultúrájának impozáns képviselőit, a kései Hun Birodalom és a megerősödő germán királyságok elitrétegeihez köthető ötvösmunkákat vizsgálja.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A tudományos együttműködések révén interdiszciplináris témájú szakmai és ismeretterjesztő előadások, tanulmányok születnek mind a népvándorlás kor kutatói, mind a széles nyilvánosság számára.
A tervezett vizsgálatok emellett újabb perspektívát nyitnak a Kárpát-medence más korszakából származó ötvöstárgyak szisztematikus archeometriai feldolgozása előtt is.
A kutatómunka során hazánkban nyílik lehetőségünk a Kárpát-medencei polikróm ötvösmunkák átfogó vizsgálatára. A kutatás támogatása komoly hozzájárulás az archeometria hazai műhelyeinek erősítéséhez, a megfelelő kompetenciák kiépítéséhez. A tervezett vizsgálatok pedig a befogadó Intézményben komoly ráfordítással kialakított labor lehetőségeinek kiaknázását is jelentik. A megvalósításra váró elemzések jelentőségét és rangját növeli, hogy a külföldi előzményekkel versenyképes eredményeket ígérnek, így a nemzetközi szakma figyelmét is magukra vonják. Mindez elősegíti a hazai kutatók, illetve kutatócsoportok bekapcsolódását nemzetközi léptékű projektekbe is.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A térség 5. századi régészeti leletei a birodalmi berendezkedés átalakulásáról tanúskodnak. Jelen kutatás tárgyát ennek az átalakulási időszaknak az ötvösművessége képezi. A kutatás sajátossága, hogy az ötvösség hagyományainak, szervezeti kereteinek vizsgálata indirekt módon, a kész termékek alapján valósul meg; a térségből ugyanis jelenleg egyetlen korabeli ötvösműhely vagy ötvöstevékenységhez köthető egyértelmű régészeti nyom sem ismert. Az 5. századi germán királyságok területéről származó ötvöstárgyak elemzése a térség politikai, gazdasági és kulturális változásainak jobb megértését szolgája. A kutatás választ keres arra a kérdésre, hogy a Késő Római Birodalom területén működő ötvösműhelyek gyakorlata hogyan hatott a szomszédos barbár törzsek anyagi kultúrájára.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The proposed research focuses on the traditions and organisational background of the goldsmith activity during the transformation of the Late Antique World. Due to lack of any direct archaeological data the project is realised indirectly, by the study of the products themselves. The archaeometric investigation of the fine metal works from the mid-to-late 5th century Carpathian Basin promotes a deeper understanding of the political, economic and cultural changes of the area. A question still under debate is how the practices and products of the Late Roman workshops influenced the material culture of different Barbarian tribes. How had the Roman heritage evolved or diminished in the Barbarian territories? The clarification of what led to the survival, transformation or disappearance of certain goldsmithing traditions traceable from the Hunnic Period is highly important. The archaeometric research aims to distinguish foreign and local goldsmith traditions as well as innovative technological solutions. It identifies the contemporary craftsmanship and outlines changes in time and space when examining the workmanship and materials of craft works. Previous results suggest that there were changes also regarding the set and source of metals and minerals used for the polychrome artefacts. The research identifies the character and degree of these changes and examines reasons and effects of the appearance or disappearance of certain raw materials. Finally it intends to reconstruct the organisational background of the handcraft; e.g. the level of specialisation and cooperation between the goldsmiths and gem-cutters as well as the degree of standardisation of the manufacturing process.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The fundamental problem of the research is to understand how the Late Roman World and its ancient institutions were transformed in the Old World, especially in the Carpathian Basin. What kind of relationship connects political affairs to economic and cultural life, handcraft and technologies, or trade and social networks? The Carpathian Basin included former Provincial and Barbarian regions and thus reflects the duality of the Early Medieval Europe to a great extent. So what was its role in these transformations? For the tracing of the changes, the second half of the 5th century plays an important role. The research investigates impressive fine metal works, which represent the elite of the Late Hunnic Empire and the Germanic kingdoms gaining power at the time. The mid-to-late 5th century is a transition period in the history of goldsmithing, separating the Hunnic Period rich in unique luxury objects, and the Langobardic and Gepidic Period, with rather mass products with common features. Thus, the initial marks of the standardisation of the goldsmith works are best noticeable here.
The systematic archaeometric study of the artefacts provides a solid basis for the accurate interpretation of the economic and trade relationships, the craftsmanship as well as the organisational background of the craft activity in the discussed area. The mineralogical and geochemical results clarify whether the provenance of mineral raw materials are local or foreign. The analyses of the alloys reveal the preceding uses of the metals. The comparison of the technological features supports the reconstruction of the specialisation between the craftsmen or the degree of workflow standardisation.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The scientific cooperation leads to interdisciplinary presentations and publications both in the academic and public sphere. Also museum collections that record the investigated fine metal works benefit from the new results. Among others, the Hungarian National Museum is going to publish a new catalogue of its Migration Period gold artefacts, incorporating results of modern processing works. Within this volume, the proposed archaeometric analyses contribute to the describing, interpreting and concluding chapters.
Apart from this, the proposed investigations open new perspectives for the systematic archaeometric study of goldsmith works also from other periods in the Carpathian Basin. Experiences gained from the project can be utilised during the examination of polychrome goldsmith works from both the first half of the 5th century (Hunnic Period) and the 6th century (Gepidic, Langobardic and Avar Periods). The extension of the scope of the instrumental as well as comparative analyses provide also new opportunities to explore the earlier and later phases of the transformation of the Late Antique World.
From several aspects, achievements of the proposed project may benefit for the Hungarian archaeometric community and in a broader sense for the interdisciplinary humanities. The project provides the opportunity for Hungarian research centres to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the polychrome fine metal works of the Carpathian Basin. Supporting the project will be a notable contribution to the enhancement of the Hungarian workshops of archaeometry and the establishing of respective competences. At the same time, the proposed examinations exploit the recently established specialised laboratory of the host Institute. The significance and scientific value of the analyses awaiting implementation is even greater as the expected results are competitive with the previous foreign related works, hence it will draw the attention of the international archaeology. This promotes Hungarian researchers and research-teams to join even international research projects in the future.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

In the Carpathian Basin, the centuries with a stability ensured by the Roman Empire were followed by the dynamically changing Great Migration Period. The mid-5th century artefacts of this area reflect the transformation of the Late Roman institutions. The proposed research focuses on the fine metalwork of this epoch, the traditions and organisational background of the goldsmith activity. The research results are attained indirectly, by the study of finished products; since, at the present time we are not familiar with a single goldsmith workshop or with any archaeological remains related to some sort of goldsmith activity in the region. The examination of the fine metal works from the territory of the 5th century Germanic kingdoms promotes a deeper understanding of the political, economic and cultural changes of the area. A question still under debate is how the practices of the workshops in the Late Roman Empire influenced the material culture of the neighbouring Barbarian tribes. How had this Roman heritage evolved or diminished? The investigation applies a combination of archaeological and natural scientific methods to identify the contemporary craftsmanship and the origin of its traditions. By means of the instrumental analysis the project points out changes in the applied techniques and the workmanship, and interprets their chronological and spatial aspects. It traces differences also in the source of the used materials and studies the reasons and effects of the appearance or disappearance of certain raw materials. Finally it intends to reconstruct the process of the craft specialisation for goldsmiths and gem-cutters and how their work became gradually standardised.

My research was focusing on a transition period in the history of polychrome fine metalwork, separating the Hunnic Period rich in unique luxury objects and the Langobardic / Gepidic Period with rather mass products. The nearly 100 investigated pieces of fine metalwork from the mid-to-late 5th century were not, or only partly involved in any archaeometric research. The comprehensive, guided analyses carried out by the project have shown that the period did not have any sudden changes neither in metallic materials, nor in decorative techniques. The quality of gold was unchanged and although silver has taken over its dominance, it still played a significant role. Silver-related technologies such as lost-wax casting, mercury-gilding, niello inlaying all have indirect local roots. In case of niello the continuation of the Late Roman practice was supposed, however the quality deterioration is obvious, both in material and technical sense. The decrease in quality becomes even more emphasised by the end of the century, affecting even the fineness of the silver and the design of chip-carving. There is no sign of any standardisation of alloys, but recycling was detected with increasing frequency and complexity. Almandine of Northern-Indian origin appeared among the used types of garnets, however only scarcely, barely indicating the major change in the 6th century. Long-used sources of Sri Lanka and Southern-India and their trade routes were preferred until the end of the 5th century.
