A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Alacsony ütközési energiákon csatolt-csatornás, míg a közepes ill. nagy lövedéksebességeken torzított hullámú módszereket fogunk alkalmazni. A mérési adatok interpretálásához és új mérési javaslatokhoz klasszikus Monte Carlo szimulációkat és az irodalomban fellelhető programcsomagokat is igénybe fogunk venni.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A fizika egyik legalapvetőbb kérdése napjainkban a kvantummechanikai sokrészecske rendszerek kölcsönhatásainak leírása.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A pályázatban vázolt problémák elsősorban alapkutatás jellegűek, a tervezett kísérletek és elméleti számítások a kvantummechanikai sokrészecske-rendszerek viselkedésének mélyebb megértéséhez járulhatnak hozzá.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

In the framework of the project we plan experimental and theoretical studies in the field of ion-molecule collisions, which recently attracts increasing interest in many research fields like astrophysics, plasma physics, environmental sciences or radiation effects in biological tissues. Our primary aim is a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the collision processes. With the use of the methods of electron and ion spectroscopy we will study the elementary processes of the collisions involving diatomic and polyatomic molecules of different symmetries: the ejection of electrons, the capture of them into projectile bound states and the fragmentation of the molecule. In the experiments planned at particle accelerators, we determine the energy- and angular distribution of the ionized electrons, as well as the energy- charge- and mass distribution of the molecule fragments with separate or simultaneous detection of the particles. In this way we will obtain information about the contributions of the single and multiple ionization processes, the orientation of the molecule before the collision and about the molecule fragmentation channels. Theoretical studies will be performed primarily for the interpretation of the results of the experiments, but we will also carry out model calculations for collisions that experimentally are hardly or not feasible at all. At low impact energies we will use a coupled-channel theory, while at medium and high projectile velocities distorted-wave methods will be applied. For interpretation and for suggestions of new experiments we also will use classical Monte Carlo simulations and program packages available in the literature.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

One of the most fundamental, unsolved problems in physics is the quantum mechanical many-body problem . The many-body problem arises from the fact that the Schrödinger equation is not analytically solvable for more than two mutually interacting particles. As a result, for three or more particles, the theory must resort to significant modelling efforts using approximations, the validity of which is determined by comparison with experiment. The study of atomic and molecular collisions presents a valuable contribution to this problem. On the theoretical side the underlying fundamental interaction between the particles, the electromagnetic force, is well understood. Consequently, for collisions involving more than two particles, the discrepancies between experiment and theory can be attributed to the few-body aspects of the theoretical model. On the experimental side the recent advancements in experimental techniques enable a more precise control of the experimental conditions, and the progress in the multi-coincidence detection methods of the collision fragments allow more complete kinematic information about the particles in the system to be determined. Understanding the elementary processes in simple molecules - e.g., single and multiple ionizations, charge transfer, fragmentation - is one way to explore the collision dynamics of more complex systems. Beyond their fundamental interest the results obtained for the atomic and molecular collisions provide essential information to many fields of application, such as plasma physics, astrophysics, environmental physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, etc.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The investigations outlined in the project are of fundamental character. We plan experiments and theoretical calculations for contributing to the deeper understanding of the quantum mechanical many-body systems. Nevertheless, the rapidly increasing activity in the field is due to the demands of applications and other research fields. Besides the fundamental significance, the knowledge aboute ion-molecule collisions finds widespread applications in other branches of science and in the practice. The experiments planned on diatomic molecules present an excellent possibility to test theories. Moreover, they provide information about atmospheric processes of planets and comets, when the ions originating from the solar wind and the cosmic radiation interact with them. The study of the polyatomic molecules containing chlorine may help to clarify the processes leading the depletion of the ozone layer of Earth’s atmosphere. Experiments and theoretical calculations for the molecules of biological importance aim to map the primary and secondary processes relevant for ion cancer therapy. Regarding the latter application, our planned investigations for the radiolysis of simple molecules are significant from the point of view that the results of our experiments carried out in gas phase may help to map and understand the primary and secondary processes in liquids. Further significance of the outlined research work is that by the multi-centre extension of the existing ion-atom collision theories we will gain new, efficient methods for the theoretical description of the molecular collisions.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Collisions of energetic ions with molecules attract rapidly increasing attention in many fields of reserch and applications. After a century-long study of the intaraction of radiation with matter, today we are ready to investigate these very complex collisions in details. The main step forward was the use of high-energy accelerators in atomic physics. The primary goal of this ”accelerator-based atomic physics” was to obtain detailed information about the basic collision processes (excitation, ionization, charge exchange, etc.) by experiments, in which atoms were bombarded by different particles (electrons, ions, exotic particles, like positrons, antiprotons, muons, etc.) in a broad energy range. In the past few years, the emphasis has shifted from atomic collisions to those of more complex molecular systems. Accurate knowlegde of such processes is important in many fields including plasma physics, astrophysics, enviromental sciences, biology or nuclear engineering. With the present proposal we also follow this trend. The problems outlined in the project are of fundamental character, the planned experiments and theoretical calculations may contribute to a deeper understanding of the behavior of the the quantum mechanical many-body systems. One of the most important aspects of ion-molecule collisions is that not only the electronic structure can be changed, but the molecule may also be fragmented to atoms or smaller molecules. With our detailed experiments to be carried out for the fragmentation process we will provide a sensitive test of the different theoretical models.

II. Víz molekulák nagy energiájú H, He és H ionokkal kiváltott többszörös ionizációja során a molekula ionizáltsági fokára igen magas, 3-5 értékeket határoztunk meg. A többszörös ionizációt követő disszociációban a szétrepülő fragmentumok izotróp szögeloszlását figyeltük meg. III. Egy termodinamikai alapokon nyugvó statisztikus modellt fejlesztetünk ki a fragmentációs folyamatok tárgyalására, amelyet sikeresen alkalmaztunk mérési eredményeink értelmezésében. IV.
Recently, ion-molecule collisions attract increasing interest in many research fields like astrophysics, plasma physics, environmental sciences or radiation effects in biological tissues. The primary aim of our studies was a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the collision processes. Our main results are as follows: I. Observation of negatively charged hydrogen ions in fragmentation of H2O and OH ions, which was interpreted by classical binary and multiple scattering models and by excitation of the molecule before the fragmentation. II. The ionization of water molecule by energetic H, He and N ions was investigated, where the measurements resulted in unexpectedly high, 3-5 values for the maximum degree of ionization. The fragment-ion emission, followed by multiple ionization of the target, was found to be isotropic for all projectiles. III. For the description of the production of the fragment ions we constructed a thermodynamical model which was applied successfully in interpreting many of our experimental results. IV. We have generalized and applied classical Monte Carlo and quantum mechanical distorted wave methods for the treatment of multicenter molecular collisions. V. By evaluating fully differential cross sections, the ionization and electron capture mechanism have been investigated in collisions of protons with hydrogen molecules, where the effects due to the projectile coherence were also considered.
