magyar összefoglaló
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A tökéletes, mesterséges fotonikus kristályok példátlan hatékonysággal képesek befolyásolni a fény terjedését.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A fotonikus kristály, definíció szerint egy olyan periodikus 3D nanoarchitektúra, amelyben két átlátszó, eltérő törésmutatójú közeg a látható fény hullámhosszával összemérhető periodicitással rendelkezik, ami meggátolja bizonyos energiájú elektromágneses hullámok terjedését a szerkezetben (ezt fotonikus tiltott sávnak nevezzük). Az elmúlt évtizedben számos olyan publikáció (nemrégiben: Biró, L. P. &Vigneron, J. P. Photonic nanoarchitectures in butterflies and beetles: valuable sources for bioinspiration. Laser Photon.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A fotonikus nanoarchitektúrák tulajdonságai erőteljesen szerkezetfüggőek. Gyakran a közel-rokon fajok hasonló nanoarchitektúrával rendelkeznek, de ezek között specifikus különbségek fedezhetőek fel (fajspecifikus színek: Bálint, Z., et al.: The well-tuned blues: the role of structural colours as optical signals in the species recognition of a local butterfly fauna (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae: Polyommatinae). J. R. Soc. Interface 9, 1745–56 (2012)). A pikkelyekben található, a látható tartományban erősen elnyelő (melanin) pigment szerepével is érdemes foglalkozni. Friss publikációk alapján látható, hogy a mesterséges rendezetlen fotonikus nanoarchitektúrák színe a térfogatukba juttatott, kis mennyiségű elnyelő anyagnak köszönhető.

Célul tűzzük ki a szerkezet – szín – pigmentáció kapcsolatrendszer szisztematikus vizsgálatát rendezetlen természetes és rendezetlen mesterséges fotonikus nanoarchitektúrák esetében úgy, hogy feltérképezzük az ilyen, alacsony törésmutató-kontraszttal rendelkező szerkezetek által kínált előnyöket (robusztusság, makroszkopikus méretben történő előállítás), a teljesen rendezett fotonikus kristályokkal szemben.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A fényvisszaverési képesség szorosan összefügg a fotonikus nanoarchitektúra szerkezetével. A lepkék pikkelyei esetében a fotonikus nanoarchitektúrát a térfogatban található kitin mátrix alkotja, amelyben levegő üregek találhatóak.
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Perfect, artificial photonic crystals have an unprecedented capability of manipulating light propagation. On the other hand their large scale manufacturing is very challenging. Living organisms and in particular butterflies, developed by biological evolution a large variety of often less regular photonic nanoarchitectures (photonic amorphous, photonic polycrystal) at a moderate refractive index contrast (nhi= 1.56; nlow = 1), playing role both in sexual communication and cryptic behavior. These biologically evolved nanoarchitectures are usually “tuned” to the various habitats in which the different species live. We propose to investigate on the basis of samples available as scientifically curated specimens in the Hungarian Natural History Museum the various types of not fully ordered photonic nanoarchitectures occurring in butterfly wing scales, to extract generalized knowledge regarding the structure property correlations of such novel nanoarchitectures, that may be in a later step implemented in the more convenient production of less ordered, artificial photonic nanoarchitectures. Information available on the biology and taxonomy of the species under study will be used to investigate closely related species living in similar and dissimilar habitats and different species living in the same habitat.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

By the strict definition, a photonic crystal is a periodic nanoarchitecture in 3D of two non-absorbing media of different refractive indexes, which has such a period of the alternation of the two media, that in a certain wavelength range (forbidden gap) of the electromagnetic waves, no propagation is possible in any direction in the structure. On the other hand in the past decade numerous papers (for a recent review see: Biró, L. P. &Vigneron, J. P. Photonic nanoarchitectures in butterflies and beetles: valuable sources for bioinspiration. Laser Photon. Rev.5, 27–51 (2011), http://www.nanotechnology.hu/reprint/laserphotrev_5_27_biophotonics2011.pdf) reported not fully ordered photonic nanoarchitectures of biologic origin. These quasiordered, or disordered nanoarchitectures do not possess a full photonic band gap, but only a partial one. Still they are used by the living beings very efficiently in sexual communication and/or cryptic behavior. Moreover, often these nanoarchitectures are tuned to the conditions of the habitat.

We intend to reveal the differences of the structures and optical properties of related species living in different habitats and of not related species living in the same, or similar habitat. In this way from the point of view of physics we hope to get a deeper understanding of the ways in which the structural modification of a certain photonic nanoarchitecture reflects in the modifications of the optical properties. On the other hand from the point of view of biology we intend to reveal to what extent the conditions of a certain habitat induce photonic nanoarchitectures with similar/different structures and similar/different optical properties.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Photonic nanoarchitectures exhibit a strong structure-properties dependence. Perfect photonic crystals can be well described by theory, but are fabricated over large areas only with important difficulties. Less regular photonic nanoarchitectures are very efficiently used by many species of butterflies for sexual communication (mate choice) and/or for cryptic behavior (to enhance survival chances). These nanoarchitectures are essentially composed by a dominantly chitinous matrix with refractive index 1.56 and embedded air voids. Although their forbidden gap is not a complete gap, they achieve important tasks: “avoiding to be eaten before reproduction”, and “finding an appropriate mate”. Often the closely related species use similar structures, but with specific differences (species specific colors: Bálint, Z., et al.:The well-tuned blues: the role of structural colours as optical signals in the species recognition of a local butterfly fauna (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae: Polyommatinae). J. R. Soc. Interface 9, 1745–56 (2012)). Less closely related species living in similar, or identical habitats may evolve similar structures in order to “tune” their structures to the light conditions of the given habitat. Data available on the taxonomy and phylogeny of the species can be used to decide the relationship of the various species which will be involved in the work. Starting along these two directions: 1) related species, and 2) similar habitat, we propose to look for correlations of the structure and color of butterflies. The role of pigments with strong absorption in the visible (melanin) is also worth investigation. Recent literature reports indicate that artificial disordered nanoarchitectures may gain color by introducing in their volume a small fraction of strongly absorbing material.

We propose the systematic investigation of structure-color-pigmentation relationship in disordered photonic nanoarchitectures, both natural and artificial, to explore the possibilities offered by such structures operating at a moderate refractive index contrast, as they may prove to be more robust and their manufacturing over large areas may be less demanding than that of fully ordered photonic crystals.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Vision is an important communication channel in the living world. Color may have many functions from attracting attention (sexual signaling), helping in hiding to avoid predation (cryptic behavior), etc.. Numerous insects and in particular many butterflies developed a special kind of nanocomposite called photonic nanoarchitecture, which is able to generate color not by absorbing a certain wavelength region of the visible light, like pigments do, but by preferentially reflecting a certain wavelength range. This is based on the special optical properties of such a photonic nanoarchitecture, forbidding the propagation of light through it. The enhanced reflectivity is closely correlated with the nanostructure of such a photonic nanoarchitecture. In the case of butterfly wing scales the nanoarchitecture is built from a chitinous matrix in which are embedded air voids. The nanoarchitecture may exhibit different degrees of ordering from perfectly crystalline to fully amorphous. The degree of ordering has impact both on the optical properties and on the difficulties of manufacturing a similar artificial nanocomposite. The naturally evolved “library” of photonic nanoarchitectures in the wing scales of the various butterfly species is a very valuable source of natural wisdom, generated during many millennia of evolution. It can be used efficiently to inspire the manufacturing of artificial structures with similar properties as the biologic models. We are particularly interested in those nanoarchitectures, which are not fully ordered as these may be not so demanding under the aspect of manufacturing as the fully ordered ones.

Általunk előállított bábokon végzett hűtési kísérletekkel igazoltuk, hogy a szexuális kommunikációban szerepet játszó szerkezeti szín stresszállósága jelentősen meghaladja a pigmentek alapú szárny fonák mintázat stabilitását.
An important goal of our work was to combine the usual physics-materials science point of view, with that of biology in the investigation of the photonic nanoarchitectures occurring on butterfly wings. We investigated for the first time the spectral characteristics of these on large sample batches, we showed: due to the fact the sexual signaling color is subjected to selection, its distribution is not normal, but uniform on a narrow range. We proved that the mating strategy influences the properties of the photonic nanoarchitecture. We showed for the first time that the spectral characteristics may be used in biogeographic investigations: we showed characteristic differences in the blue sexual signaling color of European and Asian Polyommatus icarus males. We showed for the first time that the sexual signaling color is stable over periods of 100 years (300 generations). Using cooling experiments performed on pupae produced by ourselves, we demonstrated that the sexual signaling color of structural origin is much more stress resistant than the pigment based ventral wing pattern. We developed a structural model for the investigated quasiordered photonic nanoarchitectures and we showed using this model qualitative agreement with the color changes observed during vapor sensing experiments. We showed that a single scale is sufficient for vapor sensing and the sensitivity can be increased by scale stacking.
